OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of information on the molecular mechanisms by which steroid hormones (testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone) regulate cognitive impairment. Thus, we aimed to identify the protective effects of steroid hormones on cognitive function.
METHODS: We analyzed the literature on the molecular mechanisms, biological activities, physicochemical properties, and pharmacokinetics of steroid hormones.
RESULTS: Steroid hormones can protect against cognitive impairment by regulating key genes (INS, TNF, STAT3, ESR1). Specific microRNAs, namely hsa-miR-335-5p, hsa-miR-16-5p, and

Before 1985, growth hormone (GH) was extracted from human pituitaries, and its therapeutic use was limited to children with severe GH deficiency (GHD). The availability of an unlimited amount of recombinant GH (rhGH) allowed for investigating the efficacy of its therapeutic use in a number of conditions other than GHD. Nowadays, patients with Turner syndrome, SHOX deficiency, Noonan syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, idiopathic short stature, chronic kidney disease, and children born small for gestational age can be treated with rhGH in order to improve adult height. In patients with Prader-Will

Pregnancy affects many organ systems and causes significant physiological changes that are mainly caused by changes in hormone levels. This review explores the complex interactions between pregnancy-related hormonal changes and renal function, providing insights into the practical applications of these relationships. Extensive literature searches were conducted, combining data from several sources to produce thorough knowledge. Essential discoveries include changes in renal hemodynamics, calcium/phosphorus level variations, thyroid gland hypertrophy, changed function, and cardiovascular adapta

Steroid Hormone Receptors (SHRs) when bound to its ligand can act as transcription factors, which are responsible for transcription of important genes via hormone responsive element in our genome. Many studies have revealed the molecular mechanisms involved with SHRs. Cancer specific aberrant expression pattern of SHR and variation in their mechanism created an opportunity to specifically target SHRs for developing highly effective anti-cancer therapeutics. Further, these receptors can be targeted using different nanodelivery systems thus proving to be a potent target. The anticancer nanodeliv

Background: Abnormal platelet counts are frequently observed in patients with thyroid dysfunction; however, the direct impact of thyroid hormones on thrombopoiesis remains largely undefined. Methods: This study elucidates the dose-response effect of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3) on megakaryocyte (MK) development and thrombopoiesis using both a murine model of hyperthyroidism/hypothyroidism and in vitro cultures of human cord blood CD34+ cell-derived MKs. After the application of inhibitors to MKs, the examination of total and phosphorylated protein levels of the phosphoinositide 3-

Monorchidism is an uncommon condition in tomcats, defined by the congenital absence of one of the testicles. Due to the lack of information regarding possible biomarkers, most monorchidism cases require laparotomy in order to differentiate it from cryptorchidism. Human data suggest that monorchid patients have lower serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels when compared to cryptorchids, premises that has been also scrutinized in veterinary medicine. Here, we describe a case of monorchidism in a tomcat, focusing on the clinical findings and the dynamics of AMH serum levels before and after the

Hormone blockers are defined as substances that suppress the release of sex hormones, thus inhibiting the development of secondary sexual characteristics in teenagers. There is currently an increase in young people seeking healthcare services due to a mismatch between their birth-assigned gender and their perceived or self-identified gender. In early childhood, individuals are not usually affected by their physical appearance. Dysphoria may arise during the initial stages of adolescence and if the self-perceived gender does not align with the external appearance. This may have a negative impac

Glucocorticoid (GC) drugs are the most potent anti-inflammatory agents available for the treatment of paediatric rheumatic diseases. These medications are used for the management of extra-articular features of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis and are the mainstay of therapy in children with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, and systemic vasculitis. The general objective of GC therapy is to limit the maximal dose and the exposure to the highest doses to what is needed to achieve disease control and, then, to gradually taper the dose until the minimum level s

Growth hormone (GH) is an essential factor in enhancing the productivity of animals. In ruminants, L-aspartate (L-Asp) stimulates the secretion of GH; however, the effect of D-Asp on GH remains unknown. Here, we examined the effect of D-Asp on GH secretion in wethers. Blood GH, insulin, adrenaline, noradrenaline, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), and glucose concentrations were evaluated in response to the intravenous infusion of a high-dose (0.1 mmol/kg/min) of D-Asp for 20 min. Further, concentrations of these biomolecules were evaluated when a low-dose (0.05 mmol/kg/min) of D-Asp was contin

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a peptide belonging to the transforming growth factor beta superfamily and acts exclusively through its receptor type 2 (AMHR2). From the 8th week of pregnancy, AMH is produced by Sertoli cells, and from the 23rd week of gestation, it is produced by granulosa cells of the ovary. AMH plays a critical role in regulating gonadotropin secretion, ovarian tissue responsiveness to pituitary hormones, and the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome. It inhibits the transition from primordial to primary follicles and is considered the best marker of ovarian reserve.

Radiotherapy is one of the major options currently for cancer treatment. Radiotherapy causes cellular damage inducing cell death, which is expected to be selective for tumor cells. However, side effects that alter the surrounding normal tissue are often hard to be avoided. When radiation involves the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is frequently induced, causing developmental and metabolic-related diseases in childhood cancer survivors. Growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy has been used for these patients and has been shown to be safe in general. However, there

PURPOSE: Growth hormone (GH) has been recognized to play a regulatory role in female reproduction. It has been reported that infertile GH deficient patients regained fertility after GH replacement. The frequency of GH deficiency is not established in patients diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Here, we aim to present the prevalence of GH deficieny in this patient group.
METHODS: We included patients diagnosed with unexplained infertility throughout 18 months. Insulin tolerance test (ITT) and glucagon stimulation tests (GST) were performed and insufficient response to both tests was requi

INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus regarding perioperative hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for gender-affirming surgery (GAS). Common concerns for continuing perioperative HRT included risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or hematoma. However, discontinuing HRT is not risk free and may cause mood swing or increased anxiety. Our study aimed to investigate current patterns of HRT before GAS worldwide.
METHODS: The first stage of Delphi technique was implemented by sending a 27-item survey to all surgeons (total n = 150; 94 plastic surgeon, 35 urologist, and 21 gynecologists) of the World Profe

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones play a critical role in both neuronal and glial cell functions. Multiple sclerosis (MS) has increased co-occurrence with autoimmune thyroid diseases, and recent studies have suggested a potential link between neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and thyroid hormones. However, no previous studies have examined the relationship between thyroid hormones and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-associated demyelination (MOGAD).
METHODS: We investigated the role of thyroid hormones in central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune demyelinating diseases in 26 MOGAD p

Transgender and gender-expansive (TG) people-those who identify with a gender other than their assigned sex at birth-frequently experience gender dysphoria, which is associated with negative health outcomes. One key strategy for improving gender dysphoria is the use of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT): estrogen for feminization and testosterone for masculinization. Estrogen use in cisgender women is associated with well-established changes in hemostatic parameters, including increases in prothrombotic factors and decreases in inhibitors of coagulation. Cisgender women using estrogen hav

BACKGROUND: With increasing numbers of people seeking medical gender reassignment, the scientific community has become increasingly aware of the issue of detransitioning from social, hormonal or even surgical gender reassignment (GR). This study aimed to assess the proportion of patients who discontinued their established hormonal gender transition and the risk factors for discontinuation.
METHODS: A nationwide register-based follow-up was conducted. Data were analysed via cross-tabulations with chi-square statistics and t tests/ANOVAs. Multivariate analyses were performed via Cox regression,

Identifying metabolic and cardiovascular risks of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) is challenging due to other confounding variables that affect patient outcomes and the diversity of treatment regimes. Masculinising hormone therapy produces atherogenic lipid profiles, while effects on other metabolic parameters are not consistent. There is insufficient evidence to conclude if cardiovascular disease risk among transmen is increased. The effects of feminising hormone therapy on metabolic parameters do not demonstrate a consistent pattern in the available literature. However, the risk of v

Wernicke encephalopathy is a well-described neurological complication of thiamine deficiency that is classically characterized by a triad of mental confusion, ophthalmoplegia, and gait ataxia. Although most commonly linked to alcoholism and thiamine deficiency in adults, it can present in pediatric patients. Wernicke encephalopathy presenting as dysnatremias is not well described. This report describes a developmentally delayed 21-month-old male with restrictive dietary habits who eventually developed focal neurological deficits. He was found to be hyponatremic consistent with syndrome of inap
