A qualitative assessment of cleaning and hand hygiene practices at shelters serving people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic, Atlanta, GA - May-June, 2020.

BACKGROUND: Cleaning practices and hand hygiene are important behaviors to prevent and control the spread of infectious disease, especially in congregate settings. This project explored hygiene- and cleaning-related experiences in shelters serving people experiencing homelessness (PEH) during May-June 2020 of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted qualitative, in-depth interviews by phone with 22 staff from six shelters in Atlanta, Georgia. The interview guide included questions about cleaning routines, cleaning barriers and facilitators, cleaning promotion, hand hygiene promotion, and

Concurrent Heat and Air Pollution Exposures among People Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Extreme heat and air pollution are important human health concerns; exposure can affect mental and physical well-being, particularly during periods of co-occurrence. Yet, the impacts on people are largely determined by underlying health conditions, coupled with the length and intensity of exposure. Preexisting adverse health conditions and prolonged exposure times are more common for people experiencing homelessness, particularly those with intersectional identity characteristics (e.g., disease, ability, age, etc.). Partially due to methodological limitations, such as data scarcity

Menstruating while homeless: navigating access to products, spaces, and services.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the United States face substantial challenges related to menstruation, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited access to period products, heightened stigma, and gynecological challenges contribute to increased hardships for PEH, highlighting the need for improved services and policies to address period equity and overall well-being for this vulnerable population. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with PEH (n = 12) and community healthcare and social service providers (e.g., case managers, shelter directors,

Obesity in U.S. low-income veterans:Prevalence, clinical characteristics, and homelessness.

METHODS: A nationally representative sample of 1004 low-income U.S. veterans was examined. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were conducted to assess relationships between obesity and medical and psychiatric comorbidities, functioning, and homelessness measures. WHO's end of TB targets: unachievable by 2035 without addressing under nutrition, forced displacement, and homelessness: trend analysis from 2015 to 2022.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, despite the World Health Organization (WHO) actively working towards its eradication through various initiatives and programs. Undernutrition, forced displacement, and homelessness worsen TB's burden and challenge control efforts; however, there is still no adequate research that shows the trend of these underlying factors to attain the WHO's ambitious TB targets. So, this study aims to analyze the trend analysis of these underlying factors worldwide from 2015 to 2022 and their impact on the feasibility and implications of reachi

A Co-produced International Qualitative Systematic Review on Lived Experiences of Trauma During Homelessness in Adulthood and Impacts on Mental Health.

Trauma can be both a cause and a consequence of homelessness and has lasting impacts on mental health and wellbeing. Often research focusses on trauma and adversity in childhood leading to homelessness, but understanding traumatic experiences during adulthood homelessness can be just as important for informing intervention development and policies to mitigate and eradicate homelessness. Working with people with lived experience of homelessness, this review aimed to synthesis the qualitative evidence exploring the impact of trauma during homelessness on mental health (including substance use) f

Feasibility of telehealth counselling pilot for people experiencing homelessness and/or complex needs: During COVID-19 and beyond.

ISSUES ADDRESSED: People experiencing homelessness and/or complex needs often require targeted health services to address unique vulnerabilities. COVID-19 restrictions acted as a barrier for this group accessing health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment services. The Haymarket Foundation, an accommodation and health facility in Australia, transitioned from in-person AOD-counselling services to online consultations. Clients accessing these services were tracked, from March 2019 to November 2020, to assess the impact of the switch to telehealth on client retention. METHODS: Qualitative

Trauma Experience Among Women Who Have Substance Use Disorders and are Homeless or Near Homeless.

Women with substance use disorders (SUDs) who are homeless or near homeless have high rates of mental health, behavioral health, and SUD treatment needs. This descriptive study examined the extent and nature of trauma experience among women who have an SUD and are homeless or near homeless. Results (n = 851 women) indicated high rates of trauma experience. All participants (100%) reported at least one type of trauma experience in their lifetime, with the majority (75.3

The Development of a Conceptual Framework for Providing Tailored Diabetes Care for Individuals Experiencing Homelessness: A Qualitative Study.

Homelessness results in barriers to effective diabetes self-management. Programs targeting individuals facing homelessness have refined strategies to address these barriers. We sought to develop a framework to characterize these strategies that could help multidisciplinary providers to better support these individuals. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of health and social care providers working in diabetes or homelessness in five Canadian cities (n=96). Interview transcripts were analyzed through qualitative thematic analysis. Providers described three groups o

Homelessness in the district of Nipissing of Ontario, Canada before, at the onset and during the COVID-19 pandemic: a trend analysis (2018-2021).

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a growing social concern experienced across Canada. In Ontario, specifically in the District of Nipissing, the issue has become larger with an increasing number of homeless individuals. Previous research has described the demographic composition of the homeless population both in the Nipissing District of Ontario and in the city of North Bay. However, no studies have examined homelessness in this region before, at the beginning and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research investigates structural and individual-level barriers and factors that are associated with b

The homeless, seizures, and epilepsy: a review.

This review aims to estimate the prevalence of seizures and epilepsy among homeless people in current literature as well as understand the main adversities that this group withstands. This study suggests that the prevalence of epilepsy in the homeless population is between 2 and 30%, whereas the prevalence of homelessness in people with epilepsy is between 2 and 4%. Every study included in this review corrobo

Staying safe, feeling welcome, being seen: How spatio-temporal configurations affect relations of care at an inclusive health and wellness centre.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness also experience poorer health and frequently attend acute care settings when primary health care would be better equipped to meet their needs. Existing scholarship identifies a complex mix of individual and structural-level factors affecting primary health care engagement driving this pattern of health services utilisation. We build on this existing knowledge, by bringing the spatio-temporal configurations of primary health care into focus. Specifically, we interrogate how space and time inflect situated practices and relations of care. METHODS: Th

Strengthening Public Health Capacity to Address Infectious Diseases: Lessons From 3 Centers of Excellence in Public Health and Homelessness.

People experiencing homelessness are disproportionately affected by infectious diseases and often face barriers to receiving appropriate medical treatment. Responding to the needs of people experiencing homelessness requires state and local health departments to integrate information sources and coordinate multisector efforts. From 2021 to 2023, the CDC Foundation, in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, established pilot Centers of Excellence in Public Health and Homelessness in Seattle, Washington; San Francisco, California; and the state of Minnesota. These cente

Stigma and discrimination and its homeless and health system contexts in south London: an ethnographic case study.

BACKGROUND: Stigma and discrimination are widely recognised as core social determinants of health. There is a gap in understanding how to intervene at societal and systems level to address stigma. This study aims to theorise how particular care and support systems shape experiences of stigma as it relates to homelessness, and to then develop systems-level interventions. METHODS: We present findings from an ongoing longitudinal ethnographic study, which started June 2022, in south London. Data collection included interviews with people managing, delivering, and using homelessness services (n=4
