Restorative health: lessening the impact of previous abuse and violence in the lives of vulnerable girls.

"Restorative health" is the idea that those who have been denied access to the social determinants of health, particularly as young children, should have the right to restoration of healthy functioning. In interviewing a group of vulnerable young women, ranging in age from 15 to 22, we discovered how they experience the link between health and justice in their lives. Participants were living on the street, in extreme poverty, or both. Traumatic early childhood events continued to affect their ability to function healthy. We conclude and suggest that certain rights-based principles need to grou

Using structural equation modeling to examine factors that influence sunburn frequency and severity among adults living in Canada.

This study uses structural equation modeling to examine hypothesized relationships between sunburn and physical characteristics and potentially modifiable behavior. The analysis was based on self-reported data collected from a randomly selected national sample of Canadian adults. An initial model was tested with 50% of the cases (n = 1,408); the remaining cases (n = 1,298) were reserved for confirmatory testing. After the initial model failed, theoretically plausible effects were added incrementally to improve overall model fit. The initial model yielded: chi2(68 d.f.) = 3199.41 (P < .001) and

Long-term treatment of recurrent and chronic depression.

Depression is associated with high rates of impairment and comorbidity with other disorders and has a devastating effect on those who suffer from it. Treatment options are available and can greatly improve functioning; however, undertreatment still persists. Undertreatment may result from incorrect or incomplete diagnoses or inadequate treatment duration. In addition, when treating depression, clinicians must identify underlying conditions, life-span issues, and proper treatment duration to maximize outcome. This article provides an overview of the underlying implications of depression. review

The Behavior Problems Inventory: an instrument for the assessment of self-injury, stereotyped behavior, and aggression/destruction in individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) is a 52-item respondent-based behavior rating instrument for self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive/destructive behavior in mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Items are rated on a frequency scale and a severity scale. The BPI-01 was administered by interviewing direct care staff of 432 randomly selected residents from a developmental center between the ages of 14 to 91 years. For 73% of those selected, at least one problem was endorsed on the BPI-01. A total of 43% showed self-injury, 54% stereotyped behavior, and 38% aggressi

Effects of TENS and methylphenidate in tuberculous meningo-encephalitis.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Beneficial effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on cognition and behaviour were observed in a child with probable Herpes Simplex Encephalitis. Based on these positive findings, it was examined in the present case study whether a child who had been diagnosed to suffer from tuberculous meningitis would benefit from TENS. Furthermore, as aggression and overactive behaviour were also prominent clinical symptoms, the effects of methylphenidate were investigated. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Neuropsychological tests were used to assess attention/concentration

The role of psychopathology in the parenting of drug-dependent women.

This paper explores the parenting of drug-dependent women and the contributions of comorbid psychopathology to their parenting. A sample of 32 children whose mothers were dependent on opioid drugs during pregnancy and 37 children whose mothers were not drug users were followed from birth to middle childhood. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted contrasting whether maternal substance abuse or psychopathology was more closely linked to parenting behaviors and continuity in parenting over time. Maternal drug dependence was related to whether mothers were able to remain primary caregive

Public preferences for prevention versus cure: what if an ounce of prevention is worth only an ounce of cure?

BACKGROUND: The belief that small preventive efforts bring large benefits may explain why many people say they value prevention above all other types of health care. However, it often takes a great deal of preventive medicine to prevent a bad outcome. This study explores whether people value prevention or cure more when each brings the same magnitude of benefit and examines whether preferences for prevention or cure vary according to the severity of the disability of the patients who can receive the preventive or curative intervention. METHODS: 289 prospective jurors were presented with a pol

Differentiating rapists and non-offenders using the rape index.

Some studies have suggested that phallometrically derived rape indices can differentiate groups of rapists and non-offenders. There are other studies however which cast doubt on this assertion, at least in so far as it applies to all but those few rapists who are sadistic. These studies have used rape indices which are derived from rapists' sexual responses to audiotaped descriptions of mutually consenting sex and brutal sexual assaults. It was hypothesized however, that stimuli which put more emphasis on the degrading and humiliating elements of rape would improve discriminability. Stimuli we

Sensation seeking, substance abuse, and psychopathology in treatment-seeking and community cocaine abusers.

Sensation seeking, substance abuse severity, and psychiatric disorders were systematically assessed in a clinical and a community sample of 335 cocaine abusers. In contrast to low-sensation-seeking cocaine abusers, high-sensation seekers exhibited more severe symptoms of substance abuse, exhibited more severe psychosocial impairment, were more likely to be polysubstance abusers, and had an earlier age of onset for substance use and abuse. High-sensation seekers were more likely to report both a lifetime history and family history of antisocial personality, attention deficit disorder, and condu

Health-related quality of life in Turkish patients with ankylosing spondylitis: impact of peripheral involvement on quality of life in terms of disease activity, functional status, severity of pain, and social and emotional functioning.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) affects sacroiliac joints at early stages and may involve the axial skeleton at later stages of disease. Peripheral involvement usually occurs in lower extremities. When it develops early in the disease course, it is a predictor of more aggressive disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in AS and to assess the impact of peripheral involvement on HRQoL domains in terms of disease activity, functional status, pain, and social and emotional functioning. Seventy-four AS patients were included. Peripheral involvement was prese

The psychosocial burden of HPV: a mixed-method study of knowledge, attitudes and behaviors among HPV+ women.

Despite an increased awareness and 'normalization' of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) following the release of the HPV vaccine, the psychosocial impact of an HPV infection, the most common sexually transmissible infection (STI), must not be overshadowed. This study employed in-depth interviews (N = 52) and quantitative surveys (N = 154) to assess the knowledge, emotional impact and behavioral consequences of an HPV-related diagnosis in women who had received abnormal Pap test results. Findings revealed confusion over test results and themes related to stigma, fear, self-blame, powerlessness and ang

The CoughRetrain Program: Restoring Control Through a Non-pharmacological Intervention.

PURPOSE: Non-pharmacological cough interventions are recommended for refractory chronic cough (RCC), yet structured development processes and integration of behavioral theory are rarely described. We report on the development and feasibility of CoughRetrain, a theory-informed telehealth behavioral program that integrates behavior-change strategies to support voluntary control of coughing in RCC. METHODS: CoughRetrain was developed following Medical Research Council guidance through staged problem identification, evidence review, multidisciplinary refinement, remote adaptation, and formative t

Improvement in Tics and Motor Impulsivity Is Associated With Functional and Receptor-Enriched Connectivity Changes in Adolescents With Tourette Disorder.

BACKGROUND: In Tourette disorder (TD), tics are frequently associated with impulsivity, but the mechanisms linking these dimensions and their evolution during adolescence remain unclear. We combined behavioral, clinical, and receptor-enriched analysis of functional connectivity by targets (REACT) functional connectivity imaging to examine tic severity and impulsivity over time in adolescents with TD. METHODS: A total of 64 adolescents with TD and 56 healthy control participants completed a saccadic motor waiting impulsivity (WI) task and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging at

Reduction of impairment of sexual activity in patients with genital psoriasis treated with risankizumab: interim results of a real-world study.

Psoriasis involving the genital region (GenPsO) is associated with impaired quality of life (QoL), including sexual burden and avoidance of sexual intercourse. There is limited data on the effectiveness of risankizumab in GenPsO on patients' QoL and sexual impairment. GPS-Best, a nested cohort non-interventional study within the German Psoriasis registry PsoBest, aims to evaluate the effectiveness of risankizumab in GenPsO and its impact on QoL and sexual impairment. This interim analysis involves 52 patients who completed week 16 of the 52-week GPS-Best study. Patient questionnaires, includin
