Probiotics and their fermented food products are beneficial for health.

Probiotics are usually defined as microbial food supplements with beneficial effects on the consumers. Most probiotics fall into the group of organisms' known as lactic acid-producing bacteria and are normally consumed in the form of yogurt, fermented milks or other fermented foods. Some of the beneficial effect of lactic acid bacteria consumption include: (i) improving intestinal tract health; (ii) enhancing the immune system, synthesizing and enhancing the bioavailability of nutrients; (iii) reducing symptoms of lactose intolerance, decreasing the prevalence of allergy in susceptible individ

The cross-talk between T and B lymphocytes and the oral microbiome in health and disease: a narrative review.

T and B lymphocytes are key components of the adaptive immune system, playing a central role in maintaining host homeostasis and protecting against a wide range of pathogens. A comparable form of homeostatic regulation can be observed in microbial ecosystems, including the oral cavity. This environment is extremely unstable and can be easily disrupted by various factors or stimuli. This review article presents the different types of T and B lymphocytes and their role in the human body, and attempts to answer the question of how these two basic types of immune system cells can affect the imbala

Safety, Immunovirologic, and Central Nervous System Effects of PD-1 Inhibition in People With HIV Without Malignancy.

Checkpoint inhibitors are being explored for chronic central nervous system infections such as HIV, but safety data in the absence of malignancy are limited. In this phase 1 nonrandomized study, 6 individuals with virally suppressed HIV received a single dose of pembrolizumab to assess its safety and effects on immune, virologic, and central nervous system parameters. Over 12 months, 29 adverse events occurred, all grade 1 or 2, with no serious events. HIV immune responses and viral loads were unchanged, although transient CSF viral increases occurred in 2 participants. A single dose of pembro

The Place of Appendicectomy in Inflammatory Bowel Disease-A Review.

The aetiology and pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are not completely understood; however, a dysregulated intestinal immune system appears key to its pathogenesis. It has been suggested that the appendix is central to nurturing the enteric mucosal system due to its production of lymphoid products and that an appendicectomy may have an immune modulating effect. The aim of this review is to explore the available evidence for the association between IBD and appendicectomy and attempt to define its impact on the incidence and risk of Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative colitis (

[Research advance on the interaction between gut microbes and cytokines in inflammatory bowel disease].

Dysregulation of interaction between the gut microbiota and the host immune system leads to the development of chronic inflammation, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Numerous studies have shown that the host-microbiota of IBD can directly or indirectly affect the homeostasis of the immune system. Furthermore, the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines involves in maintaining a healthy microbiota community and enhances epithelial barrier functions. Understanding the interactions between gut microbiota

Adding Fuel to the Fire? The Skin Microbiome in Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial, heterogeneous disease characterized by epidermal barrier dysfunction, immune system dysregulation, and skin microbiome alterations. Skin microbiome studies in AD have demonstrated that disease flares are associated with microbial shifts, particularly Staphylococcus aureus predominance. AD-associated S. aureus strains differ from those in healthy individuals across various genomic loci, including virulence factors, adhesion proteins, and proinflammatory molecules-which may contribute to complex microbiome barrier-immune system interactions in AD. The microbial damage and host response framework: lesson learned from pathogenic survival trajectories and immunoinflammatory responses of Talaromyces marneffei infection.

The adverse outcomes of fungal infection in mammalian hosts depend on the complex interactions between the host immune system and pathogen virulence-associated traits. The main clinical problems arise when the host response is either too weak to effectively eliminate the pathogen or overly aggressive, resulting in host tissue damage rather than protection. This article will highlight current knowledge regarding the virulence attributions and mechanisms involved in the dual-sided role of the host immune system in the immunopathogenesis of the thermally dimorphic fungus Talaromyces marneffei thr

Gut microbiome-mediated regulation of neuroinflammation.

The intestinal microbiome influences neuroinflammatory disease in animal models, and recent studies have identified multiple pathways of communication between the gut and brain. Microbes are able to produce metabolites that enter circulation, can alter inflammatory tone in the intestines, periphery, and central nervous system (CNS), and affect trafficking of immune cells into the brain. Additionally, the vagus nerve that connects the enteric nervous system to the CNS is implicated in modulation of brain immune responses. As preclinical research findings and concepts are applied to humans, the

Innate immunity in the tsetse fly (Glossina), vector of African trypanosomes.

Tsetse flies (Glossina sp.) are medically and veterinary important vectors of African trypanosomes, protozoan parasites that cause devastating diseases in humans and livestock in sub-Saharan Africa. These flies feed exclusively on vertebrate blood and harbor a limited diversity of obligate and facultative bacterial commensals. They have a well-developed innate immune system that plays a key role in protecting the fly against invading pathogens and in modulating the fly's ability to transmit African trypanosomes. In this review, we briefly summarize our current knowledge on the tsetse fly innat

Immunosuppressive/Autoimmune Disorders.

Autoimmune disorders are a category of diseases in which the immune system attacks healthy cells as a result of a dysfunction of the acquired immune system. Clinical presentation and diagnosis are disease specific and often correspond with the degree of inflammation, as well as the systems involved. Treatment varies based on the specific disease, its stage of presentation, and patient symptoms. The primary goal of treatment is to decrease inflammation, minimize symptoms, and lessen the potential for relapse. Graves disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn disease, ulcerative

Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis after Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.

Campylobacter jejuni infection is well-known to precipitate Guillain-Barré syndrome through an immune-mediated attack on the peripheral nervous system. Molecular mimicry between C. jejuni lipo-oligosaccharides on the surface of infectious agents and human gangliosides in the peripheral nerves induces cross-reactive immune responses. Although gangliosides also occur in the central nervous system (CNS), autoimmune CNS disorders rarely follow Cjejuni infections. However, longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis commonly has a parainfectious cause, triggered by a wide range of micro-organisms

Seeing is understanding: Salmonella's way to penetrate the intestinal epithelium.

The molecular processes that govern host-microbial interaction illustrate not only the sophisticated and multifaceted mechanisms that protect the host from infection, but also the elaborated features of microbial pathogens that have evolved to overcome or evade the host's immune system. Here we focus on Salmonella that like other enteric pathogens must overcome the intestinal mucosal immune system, a surface constantly on alert and evolved to restrict the enteric microbiota. We discuss the initial step of Salmonella infection, the penetration of the intestinal epithelial barrier and the models

Impact of HIV-1 infection on the feto-maternal crosstalk and consequences for pregnancy outcome and infant health.

Adaptation of the maternal immune system to establish maternal/fetal equilibrium is required for a successful pregnancy. Viral infections, including HIV-1 infection, can alter this maternal/fetal equilibrium, with significant consequences for pregnancy outcome, including miscarriages, impaired fetal growth, and premature delivery. Furthermore, maternal HIV-1 infection has been shown to have a long-term impact on the developing fetal immune system also when the infant is not infected with the virus. In this review, we discuss the consequences of maternal HIV-1 infection and antiretroviral thera

Is there a feudal hierarchy amongst regulatory immune cells? More than just Tregs.

Nature has provided the developing immune system with several checkpoints important for the maintenance of tolerance and the prevention of autoimmunity. The regulatory mechanisms operating in the periphery of the system are mediated by subsets of regulatory cells, now considered principal contributors to peripheral tolerance. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have received titanic interest in the past decade, placing them at the centre of immuno-suppressive reactions. However, it has become clearer that other immune suppressive cells inhibit auto-reactivity as effectively as Tregs. The function of Tr

[Disseminated infection by Histoplasma capsulatum with AIDS].

Histoplasmosis is an illness which occurs very rarely in Europe and it is especially rare in Germany. A generalised infection with Histoplasma capulatum, a systemic mycosis of the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS), occurs only in individuals with weakened immune systems. Within the framework of diagnostics, a pathologist can be confronted with histoplasmosis since there has been an increase in travel to and from endemic regions, as well as an increase in the number of diseases of the immune system. The presented case reports the histological intravital and post-mortem diagnostics of dissemina

[Melatonin in palate tonsils with recurrent acute tonsillitis and tonsillar hypertrophy].

Tonsils are a point of contact between the environment and the immune system. The pineal hormone melatonin is influenced by environmental dark-light variations and modulates the immune system. We measured the amount of melatonin present in pediatric tonsillar infectious and obstructive processes. The highest levels of tonsillar melatonin were found in tonsillar hypertrophy and the lowest levels in recurrent acute tonsillitis, with or without hypertrophy. Melatonin has an immunostimulative function and an antiapoptotic effect. The relationship between low tonsillar melatonin concentrations and

Necrotizing fasciitis: a nursing perspective.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) has been around for many years but recent media attention has brought attention to this potentially fatal disease. This paper examines the most recent descriptions of NF, and describes initial as well as advanced stages of the infection. Treatment of NF is widely agreed upon by physicians in that broad spectrum antibiotics and immediate debridement are crucial to patient outcome. Recent thoughts as to immune system response are briefly explored. The client presented is an extremely unusual case where spontaneous remission occurred after 4 days, and so gives rise to t

Vulvar lichen sclerosus. Immunohistologic evaluation before and after therapy.

In 20 women with vulvar lichen sclerosus (LS) we analyzed the immunohistologic features of the dermal lymphoid infiltrate and the number of epidermal CD1a+ cells (Langerhans cells). Activated (HLA-Dr+) T cells, associated with CD1a+ accessory cells, were found in the dermis in all cases. The number of CD1a+ epidermal cells was increased, and the cells expressed strong HLA-DR+ staining. These findings suggest activation of the skin immune system in vulvar LS lesions. Conventional 2% testosterone therapy failed to modify the immunohistologic features. Clobetasol, 0.05%, application seemed more e

Nanoliposome-sericin hydrogel microneedle patches effectively alleviate inflammation and scavenge ROS for the treatment of CKD-aP.

Chronic Kidney Disease-associated Pruritus (CKD-aP) is a debilitating condition commonly observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), characterized by severe skin itching and inflammation. Despite the availability of oral medications and topical treatments, their efficacy is limited, and systemic side effects are a significant concern. This study presents the development of a novel microneedle system (Cap@Lip/Dife-MNs), designed to address CKD-aP through targeted and sustained drug delivery. The system integrates liposome-encapsulated capsaicin, known for its anti-inflammatory and a

[Immune suppressive cells in the tumor microenvironment of multiple myeloma].

With the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors in cancer therapy, tumor microenvironments have attracted the attention of many researchers as a critical compartment of immune therapies. Immune suppressive cells such as regulatory T cells, myeloid-derived suppressor cells, and tumor-associated macrophages play important roles in regulating anti-tumor immunity in the bone marrow microenvironment in multiple myeloma, in addition to decreased immunogenicity of tumor cells and increased expression of immune checkpoint molecules. These cells are activated by numerous chemicals released by tumo
