Examining the correlation between diabetes and odontogenic infection: A nationwide, retrospective, matched-cohort study in Taiwan.

More than 90% of head and neck infections are caused by pathological changes originating in the teeth. When odontogenic infections are not properly treated, infections may spread to distant spaces and cause more serious infections in fascial spaces, ultimately leading to deep neck infections. Clinical experience has indicated that patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) may be more susceptible to facial cellulitis and deep neck infections caused by odontogenic infections. This study used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database (NHIRD) to analyze and examine the correlation between DM and od

Consumption and direct costs of dental care for patients with head and neck cancer: A 16-year cohort study.

Patients with head and neck (H&N) cancer are commonly treated with surgery and/or radiotherapy, which can increase the risk of oral infection, dental caries, and periodontal disease. The present study investigated dental care consumption and costs in patient with H&N cancer before and after the cancer diagnosis. Data from Swedish regional and national registers were used to follow up dental care utilization and dental procedure costs. The analysis included 2,754 patients who had been diagnosed with H&N cancer (exposed cohort) in Stockholm County, Sweden, during 2000-2012 and 13,036 matched per

Factors Related to Pertussis and Tetanus Vaccination Status Among Foreign-Born Adults Living in the United States.

Pertussis is a common vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) worldwide. Its reported incidence has increased steadily in the United States, where it is endemic. Tetanus is a rare but potentially fatal VPD. Foreign-born adults have lower tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap) and tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccination coverage than do U.S.-born adults. We studied the association of migration-related, socio-demographic, and access-to-care factors with Tdap and Td vaccination among foreign-born adults living in the United States. The 2012 and 2013 National Health Interview Survey data for foreign-born respo

Socio-environmental risk factors for medically-attended agricultural injuries in Wisconsin dairy farmers.

BACKGROUND: Accidents are common in the agricultural industry, particularly among dairy farmers. How said farmers get hurt is well established, but far less is known about how distal, socio-environmental factors influence injuries. This study examined associations between medically-attended agricultural injuries and: (1) personal sociodemographic characteristics, and (2) farm environment features and general safety practices. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was implemented with linked data from electronic health records on prior agricultural injuries that occurred between 01/01/2002-12/31/2

Applying appropriate-use criteria to cardiac revascularisation in India.

OBJECTIVES: The high prevalence of coronary heart disease and dramatic growth of cardiac interventions in India motivate an evaluation of the appropriateness of coronary revascularisation procedures in India. Although, appropriate-use criteria (AUC) have been used to analyse the appropriateness of cardiovascular care in the USA, they are yet to be applied to care in India. In our study, we apply AUC to cardiac care in Karnataka, India, compare our results to international applications of AUC, and suggest ways to improve the appropriateness of care in India. SETTING: Data were collected from t

[Provision of outpatient specialist care for mental disorders : Minor regional differences in treatment needs, major regional differences in availability].

BACKGROUND: Due to the high burden attributed to mental disorders, an important purpose of a general healthcare system is to provide comprehensive medical specialist care that is both locally available and in line with demand; however, the density of outpatient physicians and psychotherapists significantly varies between regions in Germany. To verify if these variations reflect regional variations of morbidity rates, routine data of statutory health insurance companies are analyzed on a regular basis. But these administrative data directly depend on the actual regional health care supply. Henc

Advocacy for outpatient cardiac rehabilitation globally.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death globally. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an evidence-based intervention recommended for patients with CVD, to prevent recurrent events and to improve quality of life. However, despite the proven benefits, only a small percentage of those would benefit from CR actually receive it worldwide. This paper by the International Council of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation forwards the groundwork for successful CR advocacy to achieve broader reimbursement, and hence implementation. METHODS: First, the results of the I

Increased Utilization of Cervical Disk Arthroplasty in University Hospitals with Regional Variation and Socioeconomic Discrepancies.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of cervical radiculopathy with disk arthroplasty has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration since 2007. Recently, a significant increase in clinical data including mid- and long-term follow-up has become available, demonstrating the superiority of disk arthroplasty compared with anterior discectomy and fusion. The aim of this project is to assess the nationwide use of cervical disk arthroplasty. METHODS: The University Healthcare Consortium database was accessed for all elective cases of patients treated for cervical radiculopathy caused by disk herniation

Missed Opportunities for Repeat HIV Testing in Pregnancy: Implications for Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission in the United States.

HIV testing is an effective intervention that is used for reducing perinatal HIV transmission. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a second HIV test during the third trimester of pregnancy for women in settings with an elevated HIV incidence (≥17 cases per 100,000 person-years). We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a single hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, to determine whether a second HIV test was done and to compare HIV retesting with mandated syphilis retesting. Of women who delivered at this hospital, 98.8% received prenatal care. Descriptive, bivariate, and multi

Occupational accidents with mowing machines in Austrian agriculture.

The number of recognized accidents during agricultural work is still very high in Austria. In the years 2008 to 2009, there occurred 84 approved work accidents with mowing machines. The main causes of accidents were the loss of control of machines, transportations or conveyances, hand tools, objects or animals. In the literature, numerous studies of general agricultural and forestry accident situations are available. Detailed studies on specific types of agricultural machines, which describe concrete circumstances and causes of accidents, are in limited numbers. The accident database from the
