Maternal prepregnancy body mass index and child psychosocial development at 6 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Both obesity and developmental disabilities have increased in recent decades. Limited studies suggest associations between maternal prepregnancy obesity and child neurodevelopment. METHODS: The Infant Feeding Practices Study II, a US nationally distributed longitudinal study of maternal health and infant health and feeding practices, was conducted from 2005 to 2007. In 2012, mothers were recontacted for information on their children's health and development. We examined associations between maternal prepregnancy BMI and child psychosocial development in 1311 mother-child pairs inc

Development of neurodevelopmental disorders: a regulatory mechanism involving bromodomain-containing proteins.

Neurodevelopmental disorders are classified as diseases that cause abnormal functions of the brain or central nervous system. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders show impaired language and speech abilities, learning and memory damage, and poor motor skills. However, we still know very little about the molecular etiology of these disorders. Recent evidence implicates the bromodomain-containing proteins (BCPs) in the initiation and development of neurodevelopmental disorders. BCPs have a particular domain, the bromodomain (Brd), which was originally identified as specifically binding acet

Truncating mutations in NRXN2 and NRXN1 in autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia.

Growing genetic evidence is converging in favor of common pathogenic mechanisms for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), intellectual disability (ID or mental retardation) and schizophrenia (SCZ), three neurodevelopmental disorders affecting cognition and behavior. Copy number variations and deleterious mutations in synaptic organizing proteins including NRXN1 have been associated with these neurodevelopmental disorders, but no such associations have been reported for NRXN2 or NRXN3. From resequencing the three neurexin genes in individuals affected by ASD (n = 142), SCZ (n = 143) or non-syndromic

Intragenic rearrangements in NRXN1 in three families with autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, and speech delay.

NRXN1 is highly expressed in brain and has been shown recently to be associated with ASD, schizophrenia, cognitive and behavioral abnormalities, and alcohol and nicotine dependence. We present three families, in whom we identified intragenic rearrangements within NRXN1 using a clinical targeted oligonucleotide array CGH. An approximately 380 kb deletion was identified in a woman with Asperger syndrome, anxiety, and depression and in all four of her children affected with autism, anxiety, developmental delay, and speech delay but not in an unaffected child. An approximately 180 kb tandem duplic

EMHA migraine scoring system: A novel, valid, and reliable metric to capture severity, align with patients, and facilitate communication.

BackgroundAvailable instruments to quantify migraine-related disability, such as the Headache Impact Test (HIT-6) and Migraine Disability Assessment Test (MIDAS), have certain limitations (e.g., recall bias, overlooking interictal burden), and do not always facilitate patient-doctor communication. We developed a migraine scoring system, namely the European Migraine and Headache Alliance-Migraine Scoring System (EMHA-MSS) with the aim of improving patient communication with healthcare professionals.MethodsCross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study conducted between June 2024 and March 202

Tobacco Use Assessment and Cessation Medication Orders Among Primary Care Patients by Ethnicity, Sex, and Acculturation Indicators.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic men and women in the United States. Smoking rates vary among Hispanic subgroups, with higher rates among those with indicators (e.g., language preference, nativity) of greater acculturation. It is recommended that clinicians ask about tobacco use and provide cessation treatment, as warranted. While studies in health care settings note disparities in tobacco-related care by ethnicity and acculturation proxies, we are unaware of studies that have evaluated these relationships among adult patients within community-based hea

Assessing parent-child interaction with deaf and hard of hearing infants aged 0-3 years: An international multi-professional e-Delphi.

INTRODUCTION: Most deaf babies are born to hearing families who do not yet have the skills to communicate effectively with their child. Adaptations to communication are important because the quality of parent-child interaction (PCI) predicts how a deaf child develops language. Teachers of Deaf children and Speech and Language Therapists support families with communication in the home. Currently, there are no assessments that appraise how a parent interacts with their deaf baby. Previous research has identified which parent behaviours and approaches are used in PCI assessments in research and p

Overcoming language barriers to provide telerehabilitation for COVID-19 patients: a two-case report.

PURPOSE: This report presents two cases of successful telerehabilitation delivery for patients quarantined due to COVID-19. One of the patients did not speak the therapists' language, whereas the other presented complete deafness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assembled a telerehabilitation system using commercial applications, including a remote-control application that minimizes the need for patient's input. The telerehabilitation comprised a combination of video calls with a physical therapist and a 20-minute exercise video. The first case was of a 72-year-old man who could only speak Cantones

Neural selectivity for communicative auditory signals in Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS), a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by deletion or mutation in the SHANK3 gene, is one of the more common single-locus causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). PMS is characterized by global developmental delay, hypotonia, delayed or absent speech, increased risk of seizures, and minor dysmorphic features. Impairments in language and communication are one of the most consistent characteristics of PMS. Although there is considerable overlap in the social communicative deficits associated with PMS and ASD, there is a dearth of data on underlying abno

Development of biomedical publications on ametropia research in PubMed from 1845 to 2010: a bibliometric analysis.

AIM: We have carried out a bibliometric analysis on the development of ametropia literature to determine its growth rule and tendency, and to provide the basis for the problems related to ametropia research. METHODS: Literatures that contained the descriptors of ametropia in title or paper published before Nov. 10, 2010 in PubMed databases (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Pubmed) were selected. As bibliometric indicators of ametropia, biomedical journals referring to ophthalmology by ISSN were calculated. The principal bibliometric indicators: Price's and Bradford's laws were applied on the increase or

A Conversational Agent for Providing Personalized Preexposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Support: Protocol for Chatbot Implementation and Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Chatbots have the potential to reduce barriers to preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including lack of awareness, misconceptions, and stigma, by providing anonymous and continuous support. However, in the context of PrEP, chatbots are still nascent; they lack personalized informational expertise, peer experiential expertise, and human-like emotional support to facilitate future PrEP uptake. These personalized and relatable forms of support are crucial for increasing engagement, influencing health decisions, and fostering resilience and well-being. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we describ

Skin microclimate as an indirect risk factor for pressure injuries: a prognostic factor systematic review and framework synthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Skin microclimate is a multidimensional construct comprised of temperature, humidity and airflow. Recently, microclimate has been conceptualised as an indirect risk factor for pressure injuries (PIs) because it can affect skin structure and function. The aim of this review was to determine the prognostic value of skin microclimate as an indirect risk factor for PI in adults in any clinical setting. METHOD: A prognostic factor systematic review and Cochrane-Campbell framework synthesis methodology was conducted. This PROSPERO-registered (CRD42023430167) review included eligible full

Examining how people with lived experience of neurodegenerative diseases have been included in the development of trustworthy guidelines: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This review will examine how people with lived experience of neurodegenerative diseases are being included in the development of trustworthy guidelines. INTRODUCTION: Meaningful inclusion of people with lived experience ensures that guidelines are relevant and implementable; however, people living with neurodegenerative diseases experience progressive cognitive, physical, and communication impairments, which create significant barriers to participation in guideline development. Their involvement is often tokenistic and does not consider the complex challenges associated with neurod

Interpreting free-text cardiac catheterisation reports: A machine learning approach informed by focused ethnography.

AIM: To examine how focused ethnographic insights can inform the development of a machine learning pipeline to improve the extraction of clinically relevant information from percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) documentation and support nursing education and practice. BACKGROUND: Cardiac catheterisation procedures produce detailed documentation, often embedded in free-text fields in electronic health records. For nurses delivering post-procedural care, extracting this information is time-consuming and prone to error. While machine learning (ML) offers automation potential, many models str

Becoming a Member of the Prevention Club: Development of Interdisciplinary Prevention Terminology.

INTRODUCTION: Prevention science is interdisciplinary, drawing upon multiple fields of research and practice to develop integrated knowledge. A challenge facing the field is the proliferation of different terms with the same meaning, and of terms with different meanings. This can create confusion in communication, affect evaluation standards, and ultimately also affect the implementation of preventive interventions. Contributing to the development of evidence standards for preventive interventions, this article describes the process and results of interdisciplinary prevention terminology devel
