Maxilla sinus grafting with marine algae derived bone forming material: a clinical report of long-term results.

PURPOSE: Autogenous bone grafting continues to be considered the gold standard for sinus grafting. For the past 15 years the author has used an alternative graft material and followed-up the input/output statistic of implants to evaluate if this material results similar to the autogenous bone graft. Histomorphometric evaluations of graft materials show how much new bone is formed and if the graft material is resorbed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study we used a marine derived carbonated red algae that is chemically converted into hydroxyapatite (HA). This material is distributed worldwide a

Mechanical energy in toddler gait. A trade-off between economy and stability?

Mechanical energy expenditure was investigated in children who are just learning to walk and compared with adult mechanical energy expenditure during walking. First, we determined whether the inverted pendulum (IP) mechanism of energy exchange was present in toddlers. It seems that new walkers partially make use of this energy saving mechanism, but it is less efficient than in adults. The reduced recovery values (R=40% at optimal speeds in toddlers compared to 70% in adults) can be explained by their low self-selected walking speed in combination with their tossing gait (large vertical oscilla

The ontogeny of mu opiate tolerance and dependence in the rat: antinociceptive and biochemical studies.

The ontogeny of tolerance to mu opiate antinociception and the behavioral and endocrine profiles of the opiate withdrawal syndrome were studied in rats. Animals were treated with saline or an increasing dose regimen of morphine for 5 days (5-25 mg/kg b.i.d. s.c.) and were tested 36 hr later for morphine or sufentanil antinociception in the hot-plate paw-lift test, or withdrawal was precipitated with 5 mg/kg of naloxone 12 hr after the last chronic morphine dose. Twenty-seven-, 20- and 15-day-old rats all developed tolerance as indicated by a rightward shift of the dose-response curve after chr

Myths and facts about safe patient handling in rehabilitation.

As the incidence of injuries associated with patient-handling tasks remains high in the rehabilitation community, interdisciplinary discussions on optimal methods for preventing injuries and ensuring good care continue. A national task force consisting of representatives from the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, the American Physical Therapy Association, and the Veterans Health Administration identified myths that have been promulgated on both sides of the discussion, focusing especially on rehabilitation practices. The purpose of this article is to dispel these myths by using evidence-ba

Role of Diabetes Education Program in Controlling Posttransplant Diabetes in a Recent Renal Transplant Bodybuilder: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Posttransplant diabetes is a common complication of solid-organ transplantation. We present the possible role of diabetes education in improvement of posttransplant diabetes in a 36-year-old bodybuilder who was a kidney transplant recipient. The patient had been abusing some medications to help in bodybuilding. He underwent living unrelated-donor renal transplant with thymoglobulin induction and was maintained on steroids, tacrolimus, and mycophenolate mofetil. Posttransplant diabetes was confirmed by blood tests. His blood sugar was partially controlled by 3 oral agents. The patient participa

The Effects of Individualized Low- and Moderate-Load Circuit Training on Physical Performance, Hormonal Responses, And Hematological Adaptations in Resistance-Trained Men.

This study aimed to compare the effects of low-load circuit training (LL-CT) and moderate-load circuit training (ML-CT) on physical performance adaptations, hormonal responses, and hematological parameters in resistance-trained men. Thirty-two resistance-trained males (age 20.31 ± 1.00 y) were randomly assigned to three groups: LL-CT (n = 11), ML-CT (n = 11), or CON (n = 10). Participants in the training groups performed two sessions per week for 8 weeks. Both protocols consisted of four rounds of five exercises in a circuit format with a 30 s work:30 s rest duty cycle and 2-min inter-set rest

Mapping real‑world motorcycle crash mechanisms to advanced rider assistance systems: a 29‑case analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced rider assistance systems (ARAS) for motorcycles have shown promising performance in track-test controlled evaluations, yet little is known about how often these technologies correspond to the mechanisms observed in severe real‑world crashes. This study examines the extent to which contributing factors present in a set of 29 investigator‑documented motorcycle crashes (27 fatal) align with the operational design conditions of current production ARAS technologies. The goal was not to measure crash reduction or intervention effectiveness, but to identify where these systems cou

Vision Transformer attention alignment with human visual perception in aesthetic object evaluation.

Visual attention mechanisms play a crucial role in human perception and aesthetic evaluation. Recent advances in Vision Transformers (ViTs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in computer vision tasks, yet their alignment with human visual attention patterns remains underexplored, particularly in aesthetic contexts. This study investigates the correlation between human visual attention and ViT attention mechanisms when evaluating handcrafted objects. We conducted an eye-tracking experiment with 30 participants (9 female, 21 male, mean age 24.6 years) who viewed 20 artisanal objects compr

The Other Side: Outcomes of the Nonradiated Breast in Bilateral Reconstruction With Unilateral Postmastectomy Radiation Therapy.

PURPOSE: Radiation therapy following implant-based reconstruction (IBR) is known to contribute to increased complication rates and aesthetic challenges, particularly breast asymmetry, which often necessitates additional revision procedures. Previous studies have primarily focused on the radiated breast, but unilateral postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) following bilateral IBR remains an underexplored area. This study aims to quantify the impact of unilateral PMRT on outcomes for both radiated and nonradiated breasts in patients undergoing bilateral IBR. METHODS: A single-center retrospec

Surgical Management of SLAP Lesions in Baseball Throwers: Posterosuperior and Posterior Labral Debridement With or Without Anterosuperior Repair Yields High Return to Play Rates.

BACKGROUND: Reported rates of return to the preinjury level of play (RTPL) after superior labrum anterior and posterior (SLAP) repair in overhead athletes are relatively low (22%-64%). Current fixation techniques that rigidly fix the posterosuperior labrum may lead to overconstraint and persistent pain. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the clinical outcomes and RTPL rates of our surgical strategy in competitive baseball throwers with SLAP lesions. This strategy includes debridement of the posterosuperior labrum without fixation, with selective ante

Analyzing the Effectiveness of the Push-Up Method for Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Preliminary Report.

Background and objective As the standard of care for idiopathic scoliosis, observation is indicated for patients with curves between 10° and 25° who are still growing. However, if any treatment capable of controlling curve progression were offered at such an early stage, it might reduce the number of patients requiring orthotic therapy and, ultimately, surgery. We have devised the push-up method, which focuses on the gravity-based traction force for scoliosis deformity. In this study, both the temporary, immediate curve-correcting ability and the clinical outcomes of the push-up method in pati

Veterinary student wellbeing and its relationship with dog handling and fear responses during a clinical examination laboratory.

INTRODUCTION: Veterinary care can be a significant source of fear and stress for dogs, and handling techniques play a key role in shaping these responses. Emerging evidence suggests that clinician mental wellbeing and stress can influence patient interactions. These challenges extend to veterinary students, who experience high stress during training and represent a critical population for understanding how these influences may emerge in clinical development. During a clinical examination laboratory, we aimed to assess (1) associations among veterinary students' mental well-being and affective

An integrated body composition- immunonutritional signature for predicting immunotherapy response and prognosis in gastric cancer: a multicenter retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Response to neoadjuvant PD-1 inhibitor plus chemotherapy in locally advanced esophagogastric adenocarcinoma varies widely, and tumor biomarkers alone do not fully explain the variation. We developed an integrated Body Composition and Immunonutritional Signature (BCIS) from pretreatment CT body composition and routine blood markers, and tested whether it predicts pathological response, immune-related adverse events (irAEs), and survival. METHODS: From four tertiary hospitals in Hebei Province, China, we enrolled 720 patients with histologically confirmed gastric or gastroesophageal

[Clinical application study of the "two-winged" retraction technique in laparoscopic complete mesocolic resection for the left hemicolon].

Objective: To explore the application value of the "Dual-Wing" traction technique in the medial & head lateral laparoscopic left hemicolectomy with radical resection. Methods: The "Dual-Wing " traction technique is based on the theory of mesenteric anatomy. The assistant lifts the proper mesentery of the digestive tract to be resected or the adjacent mesenteric tissue connected to it,thereby elevating the target organ and its mesentery as a whole away from the mesenteric bed. By utilizing the tension transmission between the proper mesenteries of adjacent organs to create counter-tension,the s

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal healthcare costs: a time series analysis of pregnancies of multi-ethnic mothers in South London, United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, maternity care reconfigurations disrupted in-person care, which shifted towards virtual care and self-monitoring. We assessed the impact of these changes on maternity service provision costs. METHODS: Data from October 2018 to April 2023 were used from the population-based early-LIfe data cross-LInkage in Research, Born in South London (eLIXIR-BiSL) platform linking maternity, neonatal, and mental healthcare data from three National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in South London, United Kingdom. Maternity costs were generated from the NHS perspective,

Risk-Prioritised Versus Universal Medical Nutrition Therapy for Gestational Diabetes: A Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The optimal application of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) in treating gestational diabetes remains uncertain. MNT involves individualised nutrition assessment and counselling, which is labour-intensive and is not the sole type of intervention offered by clinical dietitians. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether pregnancy outcomes differed for individuals with gestational diabetes who were offered MNT on a risk-prioritised (RP) versus universal basis. METHODS: Observational data from two cohorts of individuals who were offered MNT only if they met the high-risk criteria following gener

What are the radiographic prevalence and anatomical patterns of maxillary sinus septa in a Turkish cohort?

BACKGROUND: The maxillary sinus may contain cortical bony partitions, called Underwood's septae, which protrude into the sinus cavity and can subdivide it into multiple compartments. These structures are often shaped like inverted gothic arches and may be overlooked on routine imaging. However, their presence can significantly affect surgical access and outcomes, particularly in posterior maxilla procedures. Early identification of such anatomical variations contributes to safer and more predictable treatment planning. AIM: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and anatomical character

Effect of Early Treatment of Spasticity After Stroke on Motor Recovery: Protocol for the Baclotox Multicenter, Double-Blind, Double-Dummy Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with poststroke hemiplegia often develop spasticity, which increases disability. Antispastic treatments such as baclofen and botulinum toxin are commonly prescribed in poststroke recovery. However, their impact on motor recovery, especially when administered within the first 2 months after stroke, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the motor recovery effects of botulinum toxin versus oral baclofen. The hypothesis is that botulinum toxin is more supportive of motor recovery than baclofen and enhances functional recovery. METHODS: The study is a mult
