The role of phospholipase A2 (PlA2) in lipid peroxidation induced with t-butyl hydroperoxide was examined in rat liver microsomes. Exposure of microsomes to t-butyl hydroperoxide was associated with activation of endogenous PlA2. When PlA2 was inhibited with chlorpromazine, mepacrine, or p-bromphenacyl bromide, the accumulation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was reduced in a dose dependent manner. The aqueous, pyrone-free extract from kava (Piper methysticum) and the lipid-soluble extract (kava resin) were tested for their effect on amphetamine-induced hypermotility in mice and on conditioned avoidance response behavior in rats in a shelf-jump apparatus. Rates of lipid peroxidation and endogenous phospholipase hydrolysis were studied under conditions of simultaneous moderate hypothermia and traumatic ischemia of muscles. Activation of the reactions studied, which was expressed as an increase in content of malonic dialdehyde and free fatty acids, was of importance for pathogenesis of muscles impairments occurring in trauma. Local cooling affected favourably these patterns of lipid metabolism.

The chemical structure of Bacteroides fragilis NCTC 9343 lipid A was characterized by using conventional chemical procedures, methylation analysis, and laser desorption mass spectrometry. It was found that B. fragilis lipid A consists of a beta-D-glucosaminyl-(1-6)-D-glucosaminyl-1-O-phosphate backbone whose hydroxyl groups in positions 4, 4' and 6' are free, the latter serving as the attachment site for the polysaccharide component in lipopolysaccharide. This backbone molecule carries up to of five molecules of ester- and amide-bound long chain non-hydroxylated and (R)-3-hydroxy fatty acids.

Polarised light biomicroscopy was used to assess the behaviour and interactions of two polymer-containing preparations of artificial tears, and two lipid-containing ointments, with the normal and abnormal pre-corneal tear film. Isocarbacyclin, (+)-9(O)-methano-delta 6 (9 alpha)-PGI1 (TEI 7165) and its methyl ester (TEI 9090) were incorporated in lipid microspheres (LM) with a diameter of 0.2 micron, in an attempt to increase their efficacy, possibly by way of targeting the drugs to the site of vascular damage. When the two LM-preparations were incubated in 2% bovine serum albumin solution, it was shown that TEI 7165 was released rapidly from LM, while the release of TEI 9090 was slow. Thus, TEI 9090 in LM, injected intravenously, may not be released largely in plasma before the distribution of LM to the target sites.

Treatment of rats with 25 mg/kg/day of the neuroleptic drug chlorpromazine for periods of 7, 28 or 90 days causes a slow accumulation of lipid in large droplets in centrilobular hepatocytes. The effects of the interactions between dietary carbohydrates and copper deficiency on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and their roles in peroxidative pathways were investigated.
