Solid Papillary Carcinoma of the Breast With Invasion and Aggressive Characteristics: A Case Report.

Solid papillary carcinoma (SPC) is a rare disease of the breast and usually shows favorable biology, with or without invasion. We experienced an SPC with invasion and aggressive biology, and report its characteristic image findings in this article. A 54-year-old woman with breast cancer, histologically diagnosed at another hospital, was admitted to our hospital for a left femoral neck fracture and underwent orthopedic surgery. During the admission, the patient requested that we operate on her breast cancer. Mammography showed a well-circumscribed mass with pleomorphic and linear calcifications

Multiple Cystic Components With Bleeding Are Important Diagnostic Findings for Encapsulated Papillary Carcinomas of the Breast: A Case Report.

Encapsulated papillary carcinoma (EPC) is a rare papillary breast lesion with known favorable biology, but is not fully understood of its image findings. A 78-year-old woman with a screening mammography-detected breast mass was referred to our hospital. Mammography showed an oval mass, 4.3 cm in size, with circumscribed margins in her left breast. Ultrasound showed that the mass consisted of high-echo areas and many cystic areas. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the mass showed weak high signals in some areas on T1-weighted images and mixed high and low signals with fluid-fluid level format

Sebaceous Carcinoma of the Breast in a Japanese Male with a BRCA2 Pathogenic Variant: Report of an Exceedingly Rare Case and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a malignant neoplasm differentiated from the mature sebocyte and occurs mainly in the periorbital area. However, SC of the breast is extremely rare. We report a case of sebaceous breast carcinoma in a Japanese man with a BRCA2 pathogenic variant. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old Japanese man had been aware of a mass in his right breast for about a year and had visited his previous physician for a follow-up. Over the next year, the mass grew, and the last doctor he visited referred him to our hospital for further examination and treatment. Physical exa

Evaluation of aesthetic flat closure: A scoping review.

Postmastectomy patients may choose to not have breast reconstruction and opt for a flat closure. Aesthetic flat closure (AFC) is intentional incision selection and maneuvers for chest wall contour to optimize the aesthetic result. Patients may have a specific expectation of aesthetic outcomes, making AFC a new type of reconstruction. The purpose of this study is to perform a scoping review to define 1) patients who receive flat closure after mastectomy for treatment of breast cancer and their motivations for flat closure, 2) surgical techniques used to accomplish AFC, and 3) patient-reported o

Handedness and Laterality in Plastic Surgery and Outcome-A Retrospective, Two-Center, Evaluator-Blinded Study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the influence of handedness on the outcome of operations in plastic surgery. Our study addresses the question of whether there is a difference between the right and left sides in the outcome of plastic surgeries in relation to the handedness of the surgeon. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective two-center study, patients undergoing plastic surgery on bilateral locations (breast reduction, mastopexy, augmentation mastopexy, blepharoplasty, mastectomy on gynecomastia, brachioplasty, thigh lift) between January 2020 and December 2023 were included. Early Outcomes Using TIGR Mesh in Direct-to-Implant Breast Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Direct-to-implant (DTI) breast reconstruction often uses soft tissue support to improve outcomes and reduce implant migration. Synthetic meshes, such as TIGR Matrix, have emerged as potential alternatives to biological materials due to lower costs and complication rates. This study reviewed early outcomes using TIGR Matrix in immediate DTI reconstruction. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients who underwent implant-based reconstruction with TIGR Matrix between November 2023 and June 2024 across 2 institutions. Inclusion criteria included DTI reconstruction

Mortality Risk and Cause of Death Associated With Removal of the Adult Thymus: Analysis of the U.S. Thymoma Population.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have suggested a continued role of the adult thymus in the immune system and an increase in 5-year mortality and cancer incidence related to its removal. We sought to corroborate these findings in patients undergoing thymectomy for thymoma in the United States. METHODS: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) and the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database from 2004 to 2022 were used to identify patients who underwent a total or partial thymectomy for localized (SEER) or small (NCDB) thymoma. Five-year survival and cause of death were compared with (

Parathyroid adenoma as a cause of hypercalcemia in a patient with breast cancer: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Patients with breast cancer can develop hypercalcemia as a metabolic complication of this disease. Bone metastasis is the most common reason responsible for this complication. Yet, hyperparathyroidism is a rare cause of hypercalcemia in these patients. We present a unique case of parathyroid adenoma-related hypercalcemia in a patient with breast cancer and its diagnostic challenges that can alter patient treatment and outcome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old Azeris woman presented with lethargy and weakness. She had a history of recently diagnosed breast cancer and had a left mas

Predesigned chimeric deep inferior epigastric perforator and inguinal lymph node flap for combined breast and lymphedema reconstruction: A comprehensive algorithmic approach.

The combined use of a deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap coupled with vascularized inguinal lymph nodes (VILNs) for simultaneous breast and lymphedema reconstruction has already been well established, and promising results have been reported. However, a standardized approach for the planning and shaping of this combined flap is still lacking. We aimed to propose a comprehensive algorithmic approach for delayed unilateral breast and lymphedema reconstruction using a predesigned abdominal flap associated with inguinal lymph node transfer. We present in detail the preoperative measur

Prediction of Overall Disease Burden in (y)pN1 Breast Cancer Using Knowledge-Based Machine Learning Model.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to construct an expert knowledge-based Bayesian network (BN) model for assessing the overall disease burden (ODB) in (y)pN1 breast cancer patients and compare ODB across arms of ongoing trials. METHODS: Utilizing institutional data and expert surveys, we developed a BN model for (y)pN1 breast cancer. Expert-derived probabilities and disability weights for radiotherapy-related benefit (e.g., 7-year disease-free survival [DFS]) and toxicities were integrated into the model. ODB was defined as the sum of disability weights multiplied by probabilities. In silico predictions w

Reproducibility of Thermography for Measuring Skin Temperature of Upper Limbs in Breast Cancer Survivors.

Background/Objectives: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a chronic condition that has early diagnosis as a critical component for proper treatment. Thermography, a non-invasive imaging method, is considered a promising complementary tool for the diagnosis and monitoring of BCRL, especially in subclinical stages. The present study aimed to evaluate the intra- and inter-examiner reproducibility of thermography for measuring the skin temperature of the upper limbs (UL) of women with and without BCRL. Methods: This study, conducted with women who underwent a unilateral mastectomy, assesse

Dormancy Leading to Late Recurrence in Breast Cancer: A Case of Hormone Receptor-Positive Supraclavicular Metastasis 10 Years After the Initial Treatment.

Breast cancer recurrence can occur many years after the initial treatment, particularly in hormone receptor-positive (HR+) cases, where the risk of late recurrence remains significant. Late recurrences are well documented, with research showing that they can happen even decades after the primary diagnosis, necessitating extended monitoring and personalized therapeutic approaches. A 65-year-old woman with a history of stage IIIC invasive ductal carcinoma, initially treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, bilateral mastectomies, adjuvant chemoradiation, and prolonged hormonal therapy, presented 1

Double Medial Circumflex Femoral Artery Perforator Flaps for Unilateral Breast Reconstruction-A Case Report.

Thigh-based free flaps are a common second-line options in autologous breast reconstruction when the abdominal donor site is unavailable. While the profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap and gracilis-based flaps are most commonly utilized in this scenario, certain anatomic variations may favor alternative flap selection. One such option is the medial circumflex femoral artery perforator flap (MCFLAP). This report describes a case of a 60-year-old patient with a history of abdominoplasty and left breast cancer who underwent skin sparing mastectomy, adjuvant radiation, and ultimately, unilateral

Saline Breast Implant Associated With Inflammatory Arthritis and Positive Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA): A Case Report.

Breast implants, whether silicone or saline-filled, have a silicone shell and have been used for decades. Studies have shown an association between silicon with systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, progressive systemic sclerosis, and vasculitis. However, controversy and inconsistency have been pervasive in the literature with respect to the role of breast implants in the development of autoimmune diseases. A 39-year-old female with a past medical history of breast cancer and a family history of Sjogren's syndrome was referred to rheumatology for positive antinuclear antibodies (

A Case of Breast Cancer Metastasizing to the Ampulla of Vater.

Secondary tumors of the ampulla of Vater are exceedingly rare and associated with relatively poor prognosis. Tumors of the ampulla are classified into four distinct subtypes based on the location and involvement of surrounding structures. Most reported cases are of renal cell or malignant skin melanoma primary with only five previously reported cases of breast primary found in a literature review. We present a 72-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer to the ampulla of Vater as well as multiple bones. She had a history of breast cancer status post bilateral mastectomy and chemo 27 years
