Periconceptional and prenatal exposure to metal mixtures in relation to behavioral development at 3 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral effects of prenatal exposure to mixtures of essential and toxic metals are incompletely understood. METHODS: We investigated neurodevelopmental effects of prenatal metal exposures in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study, a prospective birth cohort. We measured metals (As, Cu, Mn, Pb, Se, Zn) in maternal prenatal and postnatal toenails and infant toenails, reflecting exposures during periconception and early pregnancy, mid pregnancy, and late pregnancy and early neonatal life, respectively. Mothers completed the Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd ed. (SRS-2) and the Behavi

Use of an extended CT scale reconstruction to diagnose metal implant failure in a canine elbow.

A Cocker Spaniel presented for recurrence of right forelimb lameness 33 months following transcondylar screw placement for a humeral intracondylar fissure. Elbow radiographs showed no evidence of implant-related complications. Standard CT scale reconstruction images failed to demonstrate implant failure. Extended CT scale reconstruction images revealed a fracture through the mid-portion of the screw. Revision surgery confirmed the implant failure; the screw was replaced and the lameness subsequently resolved. Extended CT scale reconstruction images allow detailed assessment of metal implants a

Aggregation-induced emission active metal complexes: a promising strategy to tackle bacterial infections.

Bacterial infection is a major global threat to human health and currently one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The development of probes for rapid diagnosis of bacteria with desired sensitivity and selectivity along with antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria has remained a great challenge. Whilst the traditional methods such as cell culture and colony counting, polymerase chain reaction and immunoassays are used for bacterial infection detection, these are time consuming, laborious and require a skilled operator. On the other hand, the rapid emergence of M

Metal-chelating benzothiazole multifunctional compounds for the modulation and 64Cu PET imaging of Aβ aggregation.

While Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, there is still a dearth of efficient therapeutic and diagnostic agents for this disorder. Reported herein are a series of new multifunctional compounds (MFCs) with appreciable affinity for amyloid aggregates that can be potentially used for both the modulation of Aβ aggregation and its toxicity, as well as positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of Aβ aggregates. Firstly, among the six compounds tested HYR-16 is shown to be capable to reroute the toxic Cu-mediated Aβ oligomerization into the formation of less toxic

Metal immobilization and nitrate reduction in a contaminated soil amended with zero-valent iron (Fe0).

Technologies based on zero-valent iron (Fe0) are increasingly being used to immobilize metals in soils and remove metals and nitrate from waters. However, the impact of nitrate reduction on metal immobilization in metal contaminated soils has been poorly investigated so far. Here, different concentrations of Fe0 filings (1%, 2% and 5%; wt%) were applied to a metal contaminated soil. The resulting nitrate reduction and metal (Cd and Zn) immobilization was investigated using a column leaching experiment for 12 weeks. Corrosion of Fe0 filings and precipitation of Fe oxyhydroxydes (FeOOH) on the s

Migration of Bare-Metal Stent Placed in the Right Iliac Vein Into the Right Pulmonary Artery.

Stent migration is a rare event with potentially serious complications including cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. We report a case of migration of arterial stent placed in the right iliac vein into the right pulmonary artery; it was diagnosed there and subsequently not removed for at least 3 years. Despite reports in the literature for the removal of migrated stents by minimally invasive interventional methods, in our case, that was not possible because of the long period during which the foreign body was in the right pulmonary artery and the proximal partial occlusion of organized mural

Rejuvenation of Zr-Based Bulk Metallic Glasses by Ultrasonic Vibration-Assisted Elastic Deformation.

The rejuvenation of Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) by ultrasonic vibration-assisted elastic deformation (UVEF) was studied herein. The UVEF-treated samples demonstrate an obvious rejuvenation and have a higher relaxation enthalpy and a smaller range of supercooled liquid regions than the as-cast samples. The fracture of the rejuvenated amorphous alloy is mainly ductile fracture, and shear deformation occurs in the deformation region. It is also found that as the amplitude increases, the free volume of the rejuvenated amorphous alloy increases, the yield strength and the

Low-dose CT with metal artifact reduction in arthroplasty imaging: a cadaveric and clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a simulated low-dose metal artifact reduction (MAR) CT technique is comparable with a clinical dose MAR technique for shoulder arthroplasty evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two shoulder arthroplasties in cadavers and 25 shoulder arthroplasties in patients were scanned using a clinical dose (140 kVp, 300 qrmAs); cadavers were also scanned at half dose (140 kVp, 150 qrmAs). Images were reconstructed using a MAR CT algorithm at full dose and a noise-insertion algorithm simulating 50% dose reduction. For the actual and simulated half-dose cadaver scans, differenc

Covered Metal Stent after Dysfunction of Uncovered Stents for Palliation of Gastrointestinal Malignant Obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) have been used for the palliative treatment of malignant gastrointestinal tract obstruction. However, restenosis or incomplete expansion of a first stent is a frequent complication, and the effectiveness of reintervention with placement of a second stent is still controversial. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of covered SEMS (cSEMS) placement after dysfunction of uncovered SEMS (uSEMS) by the stent-in-stent technique. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied a consecutive series of patients receiving palliative treatment for

Evaluation of the effects of chronic occupational exposure to metallic mercury on the thyroid parenchyma and hormonal function.

INTRODUCTION: Experiments in animals exposed to mercury (Hg) in different chemical states have shown thyroid parenchymal and hormone alterations. However, these experiments did not allow the establishment of dose-response curves or provide an understanding of whether these Hg effects on the thyroid parenchyma occur in humans. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between chronic occupational exposure to metallic Hg and alterations in thyroid hormones and gland parenchyma 14 years after the last exposure. METHODS: A cross-sectional study including 55 males exposed in the past to metallic Hg

Disparities in Trace Metal Levels in Hodgkin/Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Patients in Comparison with Controls.

Lymphoma arises from cells of the immune system and trace metals augment the immune system and their imbalance may promote immunological disorders including tumorigenesis. The primary aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the levels of essential/toxic trace metals in the nails of non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas patients in comparison with controls. The samples collected from patients and controls were digested in the mixture of HNO3-HClO4 and selected trace metals were analysed using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The results showed that mean concentrations of some elements

Long-term outcomes of two types of metal stent for chronic benign ureteral strictures.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to compare the results of long-term use of two types of metal stent for chronic benign ureteral strictures. METHODS: Our study included 46 ureter units (UUs) that underwent metal stent placement from 2010 to 2017. We included benign ureteral strictures causes by variety reasons that could not be solved by other treatment and malignant obstructions were excluded. Covered mesh stent (Uventa™) and a thermo-expandable stent (Memokath 051™) were used. Primary success was defined as maintaining patency without procedures and overall success was defined as maintaining patency wi

Endoscopic deployment of multiple (≥ 3) metal stents for unresectable malignant hilar biliary strictures.

Background and study aims  Endoscopic deployment of multiple (≥ 3) self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) for high-grade unresectable malignant hilar biliary strictures (UMHBS) is technically challenging. Eleven consecutive patients with high-grade UMHBS (mean age: 76 years, male/female: 5/6, Bismuth-Corlette classification IIIa/IV: 7/4) underwent endoscopic deployment of multiple SEMS using a combination of side-by-side (SBS) and stent-in-stent (SIS) methods. Technical and clinical success rates were 11/11. More than three SEMS were successfully deployed, and obstructive jaundice was fully impro

A novel, rapid, and low cost method for preparing tissues with metallic stents for routine histology.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery stenting has become a common procedure and cardiovascular pathology specimens containing these metallic stents are accordingly becoming common. Histologic examination of stented vessels is imperative, but special techniques are needed due to the presence of metal within the tissue. We describe a rapid and inexpensive method for preparing stented vascular specimens for routine histology suitable for use in almost any histology laboratory. DESIGN: After formalin fixation and decalcification, stented vascular segments were freeze-embedded and sectioned using a handhel

Antibacterial Activity of combinatorial treatments composed of transition-metal/antibiotics against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Notwithstanding evidence that tuberculosis (TB) is declining, one of the greatest concerns to public health is the emergence and spread of multi-drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-TB). MDR-TB are defined as strains which are resistant to at least isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin, the two most potent TB drugs, and their increasing incidence is a serious concern. Recently, notable efforts have been spent on research to pursue novel treatments against MDR-TB, especially on synergistic drug combinations as they have the potential to improve TB treatment. Our research group has

Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Activities of Helical Antimicrobial Peptide Sequences Incorporating Metal-Binding Motifs.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent alternative strategies to combat the global health problem of antibiotic resistance. However, naturally occurring AMPs are generally not sufficiently active for use as antibiotics. Optimized synthetic versions incorporating additional design principles are needed. Here, we engineered amino-terminal Cu(II) and Ni(II) (ATCUN) binding motifs, which can enhance biological function, into the native sequence of two AMPs, CM15 and citropin1.1. The incorporation of metal-binding motifs modulated the antimicrobial activity of synthetic peptides against a panel of

Prospective multicenter study of primary EUS-guided choledochoduodenostomy using a covered metal stent.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: EUS-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD) is increasingly reported as a salvage technique after failed endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, but it is still controversial whether EUS-BD can replace transpapillary biliary stenting. Therefore, we conducted this multicenter, prospective study of EUS-guided choledochoduodenostomy (EUS-CDS) using a covered metallic stent (CMS) as primary biliary drainage for unresectable distal malignant biliary obstruction (MBO). METHODS: Patients with unresectable distal MBO without any prior drainage are enrolled. Primary endpoin

Mass spectrometric quantification of the binding ratio of metal-based anticancer complexes with protein thiols.

RATIONALE: The binding ratio of metal complexes with cysteinyl thiols in proteins plays an important role in deciphering the mechanisms of action of therapeutic metal complexes, but its analysis is still a significant challenge. In this work, a quantitative mass spectrometry method is developed to determine the binding ratio of metal-based anticancer complexes with cysteines in human copper chaperone protein Atox1. METHODS: A novel strategy based on a thiol-specific stable isotopic labelling reagent was developed to determine the binding ratio of metal-based anticancer complexes, namely cispl
