The origin of post-injury neointimal cells in the rat balloon injury model.

AIMS: The origin of post-injury neointimal cells is still a matter of debate. This study aims to determine the anatomic source of neointimal cells in one of the most important animal models for the study of vascular stenosis in response to injury, the rat balloon injury model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Chimeric rats were generated by rescuing lethally irradiated animals with green fluorescent protein (GFP)(+) bone marrow (BM) cells from transgenic rats. Neointimal formation was induced in the right iliac artery of these animals using a balloon angioplasty catheter. Injured and non-injured contra-l

Aortoiliac hemodynamic and morphologic adaptation to chronic spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Reduced lower limb blood flow and resistive hemodynamic conditions potentially promote aortic inflammation and aneurysmal degeneration. We used abdominal ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and computational flow modeling to determine the relationship between reduced infrarenal aortic blood flow in chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) subjects and risk for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) disease. METHODS: Aortic diameter in consecutive SCI subjects (n = 123) was determined via transabdominal ultrasonography. Aortic anatomic and physiologic data were acquired via magnetic reso

[Criteria for classification of upper limb work-related musculo-skeletal disorders due to biomechanical overload in occupational health. Consensus document by an Italian Working Group].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In a preliminary consensus document the authors proposed criteria and methods to identify upper limb work-related MSDs due to biomechanical overload. With this document they intend to define severity according to shared models and procedures so as to fit behaviours to diagnostic procedures and their medical-legal assessment. This becomes especially important in view of Ministerial Decree of April 27 2004 fixing the new lists of diseases having a possible work-related origin that must be reported by law in accordance with art. 139 of law n. 1124, and also on account of

Dysplastic vessels after surgery for brain arteriovenous malformations.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The cause and clinical significance of residual dysplastic vessels after surgery for brain arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are unclear. We studied predictors and frequency of residual dysplastic vessels on cerebral angiography after AVM surgery. METHODS: The 240 prospectively enrolled surgical patients from the New York AVM Databank underwent 269 AVM-related surgical procedures. Reported postoperative brain angiographic findings were classified post hoc as showing (1) persistent dysplastic vessels, (2) a residual AVM, (3) focal hyperemia in the surgical bed, (4) othe

Comorbidity and survival of elderly head and neck carcinoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and tobacco, the primary etiologic agents for head and neck carcinoma (HNCA), cause other chronic diseases and may contribute to the high prevalence of comorbid conditions and generally poor survival of persons with HNCA. METHODS: The authors explored the prognostic role of comorbidity in persons with HNCA using Health Care Finance Administration Medicare (HCFA) files linked with the appropriate files of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. The Charlson comorbidity index was applied to in-patient data from the HCFA files. The SEER data were used

A modified transorbital baboon model of reperfused stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although pathophysiological studies of focal cerebral ischemia in nonhuman primates can provide important information not obtainable in rodent models, primate experimentation is limited by considerations of cost, availability, effort, and ethics. A reproducible and quantitative model that minimizes the number of animals necessary to detect differences between treatment groups is therefore crucial. METHODS: Eight male baboons (weight, 22+/-2 kg) underwent left transorbital craniectomy followed by 1 hour of temporary ipsilateral internal carotid artery occlusion at the l

Three-dimensional echocardiography: research toy or clinical tool?

Conventional 2D echocardiography is an excellent qualitative imaging method, but its use for quantitation is limited by test-retest reproducibility of image planes. The increasing sophistication of medical treatments for left ventricular dysfunction, hypertension and valvular heart disease has created the need for accurate and reproducible measurements of chamber dimensions. Similarly, improvements in valve repair and catheter-based interventions for valve lesions and septal defects have created the need for better visualisation of cardiac structures. The use of 31) echocardiography may decrea

The FEF25-75/FVC ratio is associated with methacholine airway responsiveness. The normative aging study.

Airway responsiveness is known to be partly explained by geometric and anatomic factors. This cross-sectional investigation was undertaken to determine whether FEF25-75/FVC as a surrogate measure of airway size relative to lung size is associated with airway responsiveness to methacholine. Posteroanterior chest radiographs and spirometry were performed on a group of 929 middle aged and older men from an ongoing longitudinal study, the Normative Aging Study, who returned for their regularly scheduled examination between 1984 and 1989. Subjects had a mean age of 60.5 +/- 7.7 yr. FEV1, FEF25-75,

Production and characterization of two ependymoma xenografts.

Childhood ependymomas exhibit epidemiologic, anatomic, histologic, and biologic features and distinguish them from other gliomas. Because of their propensity to grow in functionally sensitive regions of the brain, adequate tumor sampling for basic and therapeutic research is limited. We have established xenografts in both subcutaneous and intracranial nude mouse systems (D528 EP-X, D612 EP-X) from the ependymomas of two nonrelated children. Median subcutaneous growth rates (reported in days to grow from 200 mm3 to 1000 mm3) are 82 days for D528 EP-X (n = 10) and 50 days for D612 EP-X (n = 10).

Code-Free AutoML for Binary Classification of Fractured and Non-fractured Bone Radiographs From a Heterogeneous Public Dataset Using Google Cloud Vertex AI: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Fracture detection on radiographs can be challenging, particularly for subtle or nondisplaced injuries, while development of artificial intelligence (AI) models often requires programming expertise and specialized computational resources. This proof-of-concept study evaluated whether a commercially available code-free automated machine-learning platform could distinguish fractured from non-fractured bone radiographs. A publicly available heterogeneous dataset containing 420 radiographic images, including 130 labeled as fractured and 290 labeled as non-fractured, was imported into Google Cloud

Correlation of Radial and Ulnar Shaft Bowing Using the 3D Central Line Method.

Forearm rotation depends on the multiplanar bowing of the radius and ulna. Despite the importance of the fundamental 3D anatomic understanding of the forearm for fracture fixation or implant design, all morphological studies have applied only two-dimensional methods rather than analyzing the true full 3D space. No study investigated the intra-pair relation of ulna/radius either. Therefore, we processed CT scans of 30 healthy forearms into 3D models. Each bone was divided into 10 segments along the rotation axis, creating 11 cross-sections with central points. Connecting these central points yi

Pulsed field ablation: from concepts to technology.

AIMS: Pulsed field ablation (PFA) has emerged as a transformative approach for treating cardiac arrhythmias by exploiting irreversible electroporation to preferentially injure myocardium while limiting collateral damage. Translating this biophysical principle into safe and effective clinical systems requires careful integration of waveform design, catheter engineering, computational and experimental modelling, safety testing, and procedural workflow. OBJECTIVE: This review summarizes the fundamental physical and engineering principles that govern cardiac PFA and examines how these principles

Deep learning reconstruction in prostate MRI: technical principles, clinical applications, and future directions.

Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) has become integral to the detection, localization, risk stratification, and management of prostate cancer. Increasing utilization of prostate MRI in screening, active surveillance, targeted biopsy guidance, and treatment planning has amplified the demand for faster imaging protocols while maintaining high diagnostic quality. Conventional MRI acceleration strategies, including parallel imaging and compressed sensing, improve acquisition efficiency but remain limited by trade-offs involving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), image sharpness, artifact

Outcomes of Lobectomy vs Sublobar Resection for Clinical Stage IA3 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Recent trials demonstrate comparable outcomes between sublobar resection (SLR) and lobar resection (LR) for stage IA1-2 (≤2 cm) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Conversely, historical studies reported more recurrences with SLR than with LR for stage IA3 NSCLC (>2 cm, ≤3 cm), although these investigations predated diagnostic and therapeutic advancements. We aimed to compare SLR and LR outcomes in these patients in the contemporary era. METHODS: Patients assigned to clinical stage IA3 NSCLC undergoing resection at a single institution (2015-2024) were stratified by wedge resectio

Outcomes following left-sided pancreatectomy management with and without splenectomy for major pancreatic injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic pancreatic injuries carry significant mortality and often involve splenectomy because of the anatomic proximity of the spleen. However, current trauma guidelines provide no evidence-based recommendation for or against routine splenectomy at the time of left-sided pancreatectomy, instead advocating an individualized approach. Contemporary data comparing left-sided pancreatectomy management with splenectomy and without splenectomy (nonsplenectomy) remain limited. We evaluated perioperative outcomes following splenectomy versus nonsplenectomy left-sided pancreatectomy in a n

In Search of the "Eloquent Brain": History, Science, and Future.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many decisions in neurosurgical practice are guided by whether "eloquent" or "noneloquent" cortex is involved in a patient's disease. Despite the ubiquity of these terms, their historical origins and scientific validity are rarely questioned. This review examines the divergent histories of cerebral localization and neurosurgical nomenclature to critically evaluate the utility of the "eloquence" framework in the modern era. METHODS: A literature review was conducted in PubMed to identify early and influential uses of this terminology. Historical textbooks and scienti

Metabolic Syndrome, Component Burden, and Incident Gastric Cancer Risk: A Prospective Cohort Study in the UK Biobank.

UNLABELLED: As Helicobacter pylori prevalence declines, understanding the contribution of modifiable systemic factors to gastric cancer risk becomes increasingly important. We evaluated the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS), its individual components, and anatomic subsites with incident gastric cancer in 471,540 UK Biobank participants. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the risk of overall, cardia, and non-cardia gastric cancers, and restricted cubic splines were used for exploratory nonlinear analyses. Over a mean follow-up of 6.5 years, 332 incident g

Warmed intravenous fluid administration attenuated a reduction in body temperature in anaesthetised horses.

BACKGROUND: Peri-anaesthetic hypothermia is a well-documented complication of general anaesthesia and is associated with prolonged recovery, impaired wound healing, and delayed coagulation. Fluid warmers can be used to mitigate heat loss, but there is little evidence supporting their effectiveness in equine anaesthesia. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether administration of warmed intravenous fluids attenuates heat loss during general anaesthesia in horses. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomised, crossover in vivo experiment. METHODS: Six healthy adult horses were anaesthetised twice and adminis
