Clinical and Economic Outcomes Associated With Remote Monitoring for Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices: A Population-Based Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite expert recommendations advocating use of remote monitoring (RM) of cardiac implantable electronic devices, implementation in routine clinical practice remains modest due to inconsistent funding policies across health systems and uncertainty regarding the efficacy of RM to reduce adverse cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of patients with de novo implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) with or without cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-D), using administrative health data in Alberta, Canada, from 2010 to 2016. We assess

Hemodilution is not the only reason of difference: Comparison of fasting and non-fasting lipoproteins in paired samples.

INTRODUCTION: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and generally measured after 8-12 h fasting. However, some recent studies have pointed that non-fasting lipoproteins, especially LDL concentrations, are better indicators for demonstrating CVD risk and atherosclerosis. They asserted that nutrition is a negligible factor on changes in lipoprotein concentrations and claimed this difference as a result of hemodilution effect, caused from fluid intake and can be eliminated by applying some adjustments. We aimed to compare the fastin

Cardiovascular Disease in Relation to Placental Abruption: A Population-Based Cohort Study from Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular (CVD) complications stemming from vascular dysfunction have been widely explored in the setting of preeclampsia. However, the impact of abruption, a strong indicator of microvascular disturbance, on the risk of CVD mortality and morbidity remains poorly characterised. METHODS: We designed a cohort analysis of 828 289 women who delivered singletons in Denmark between 1978 and 2010. We linked the National Patient Registry and the Registry of Causes of Death to the Danish Birth Registry to ascertain CVD events. We estimated CVD risks in relation to abruption from Cox p

LA-419, a nitric-oxide donor for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders.

LA-419, currently being developed by Lacer SA, is a thiol-containing analog of isosorbide mononitrate that is undergoing assessment in clinical trials for the treatment of chronic ischemic cardiovascular disorders. The compound was originally designed to have a reduced tendency toward tolerance sensitivity - a major limitation of established organic nitrate compounds. The rationale behind the drug design was to include an antioxidant moiety in the drug structure to combat the contribution of oxidative stress in tolerance induction. The compound is at an early stage of development, but has alre

Associations of triglyceride-glucose-related composite obesity indices with cardiovascular diseases and mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a surrogate marker of insulin resistance. TyG-based composite adiposity indices (e.g., TyG-WHtR and TyG-WC) have been used for cardiovascular risk assessment. However, the evidence has not been systematically synthesized, and differences in risk increments across indices, as well as their dose-response relationships, remain unclear. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science through October 8, 2025, for observational studies evaluating associations of TyG-based composite adiposity indices (TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR, TyG-ABSI, an

Artificial Intelligence for the Diagnosis of Transthyretin Amyloid Cardiomyopathy: A Systematic Review of Machine Learning Application.

BACKGROUND: Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) remains under-recognised, and earlier identification is increasingly important with disease-modifying therapy. Artificial intelligence (AI) applied to routine cardiovascular data may support screening, triage and diagnostic interpretation. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science and CENTRAL were searched from inception to August 2026 for studies evaluating AI/machine learning for ATTR-CM detection, screening or classification, including broader cardiac-amyloidosis models with separately extractable ATTR-specific performance a

Endocannabinoid system dysregulation in non-communicable diseases: implications for skeletal muscle health.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their associated skeletal muscle (SkM) degeneration substantially contribute to morbidity and mortality. Interestingly, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is increasingly recognized as an important regulator of both NCD pathophysiology and SkM plasticity. This narrative review summarizes the interplay between the ECS, NCDs and SkM degeneration - a potentially interesting triad that has not yet been comprehensively described, but may stimulate future research into the role of ECS-targeted interventions in the context of disease-associated SkM wasting. Therefor

Developing explainable machine learning models from biochemical and clinical data to predict all-cause and cause-specific mortality in CVD-cancer comorbidity: A longitudinal study based on NHANES.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer are leading causes of mortality, often coexisting in aging populations. Patients with comorbidities face synergistically increased risks, yet accurate and interpretable prediction tools remain limited. Conventional Cox proportional hazards (Cox PH) models cannot fully capture nonlinear biochemical marker interactions, restricting predictive utility. OBJECTIVE: Develop interpretable machine learning (ML) models predicting all-cause, CVD-specific, and cancer-specific mortality in U.S. adults with comorbid CVD and cancer using routine biochemic

Balancing the risk of major bleeding against vascular disease risk in people without atherosclerotic disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the primary prevention setting, low-dose aspirin reduces major vascular events (MVEs) by approximately 11% but increases major bleeding (MB) by 40-50%, implying that net benefit will be most evident when the MVE-to-MB ratio is >4. This study aimed to derive cross-validated risk scores for MB and MVE and use the MVE-to-MB ratio to identify groups who may derive differing net benefits from treatment. METHODS: 431 167 UK Biobank participants without known atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease at baseline were followed through record linkage for incident MVEs (myocardial

Choroid plexus calcifications are not associated with putative markers of glymphatic dysfunction: A population study in middle-aged and older adults.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent studies have suggested an association between dysfunction of the choroid plexus and the glymphatic system. However, information is inconclusive. Following a population-based study design, we aimed to assess the association between choroid plexus calcifications (CPCs)-as a surrogate of choroid plexus dysfunction-and severity and progression of putative markers of glymphatic dysfunction, including white matter hyperintensities (WMH) of presumed vascular origin and abnormally enlarged basal ganglia perivascular spaces (BG-PVS). METHODS: This study recruited communi

Atherothrombotic and thrombolytic biomarkers in incident stroke and atrial fibrillation-related stroke: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although several biomarkers have been studied in thromboembolic stroke, measuring the balance between thrombus formation and thrombolysis and data on its role in predicting stroke and atrial fibrillation (AF)-related stroke is limited. We sought to assess atherothrombotic biomarkers grouped into composite factors that reflect thrombotic and thrombolytic potential, and the balance between these factors as it relates to incident stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and stroke/TIA in AF. METHODS: A Thrombotic Factor, derived from fibrinogen, plasmin-antiplasmin complex,

Spatial distribution characteristics of PM2.5 and PM10 in Xi'an City predicted by land use regression models.

PM2.5 and PM10 could increase the risk for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in the general public and severely limit the sustainable development in urban areas. Land use regression models are effective in predicting the spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants, and have been widely used in many cities in Europe, North America and China. To reveal the spatial distribution characteristics of PM2.5 and PM10 in Xi'an during the heating seasons, the authors established two regression prediction models using PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations from 181 monitoring stations and 87 independent v

Risk factors for death in kidney transplant patients: analysis from a large protocol biopsy registry.

BACKGROUND: Identification and quantification of the relevant factors for death can improve patients' individual risk assessment and decision-making. We used a well-documented patient cohort (n = 892) in a renal transplant programme with protocol biopsies to establish multivariable Cox models for risk assessment at 3 and 12 months post-transplantation. METHODS: Patients transplanted between 2000 and 2007 were observed up to 11 years (total observation 5227 patient-years; median 5.9 years). Loss to follow-up was negligible (n = 15). A total of 2251 protocol biopsies and 1214 biopsies for cause
