Endocrine predictors of mortality in canine babesiosis caused by Babesia canis rossi.

This prospective, cross-sectional, observational study was designed to determine the association between the hormones of the pituitary-adrenal and pituitary-thyroid axes and outcome in dogs with naturally occurring Babesia canis rossi babesiosis. Ninety-five dogs with canine babesiosis were studied and blood samples were obtained from the jugular vein in each dog prior to treatment at admission to hospital. Serum cortisol, adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), thyroxine, free thyroxine and thyrotropin (TSH) concentrations were measured. Diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction and r

Prophylactic antibiotics to reduce morbidity and mortality in neonates with umbilical artery catheters.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical artery catheters are often used in unwell neonates. Infection related to the use of these catheters may cause significant morbidity and mortality. The use of prophylactic antibiotics has been advocated for all newborns with umbilical artery catheters in order to reduce the risk of colonisation and acquired infection. Countering this is the possibility that harm, such as the emergence of antibiotic resistant organisms, may outweigh benefit. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to assess whether prophylactic antibiotics reduce mortality and morbidity in neonates with umbi

Long-term associations of outdoor air pollution with mortality in Great Britain.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have indicated long-term effects on mortality of particulate and sulphur dioxide (SO(2)) pollution, but uncertainties remain over the size of any effects, potential latency and generalisability. METHODS: A small area study was performed across electoral wards in Great Britain of mean annual black smoke (BS) and SO(2) concentrations (from 1966) and subsequent all-cause and cause-specific mortality using random effect models within a Bayesian framework adjusted for social deprivation and urban/rural classification. Different latencies and changes in associations over

Socioeconomic and behavioral determinants of mortality in posttransition Russia: a prospective population study.

PURPOSE: To study different socioeconomic determinants of mortality in posttransition Russia and propose potential explanations. Previous research has demonstrated a widening educational mortality gradient, widespread deprivation, and harmful health behaviors. METHODS: Data were from seven rounds (1994-2002) of the 38-center Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey. We measured associations among education, income, consumer goods, smoking, alcohol consumption, and subsequent death (reported by another household member), using univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis. RESULT

Effects of sevelamer and calcium-based phosphate binders on mortality in hemodialysis patients.

Elevated serum phosphorus and calcium are associated with arterial calcification and mortality in dialysis patients. Unlike calcium-based binders, sevelamer attenuates arterial calcification but it is unknown whether sevelamer affects mortality or morbidity. In a multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel design trial we compared sevelamer and calcium-based binders on all-cause and cause-specific mortality (cardiovascular, infection, and other) in prevalent hemodialysis patients. A total of 2103 patients were initially randomized to treatment and 1068 patients completed the study. All-cause

Hypotension is a predictor of mortality in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

OBJECTIVES: To identify variables that predict the in-hospital course and prognosis of patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 94 patients (20 females) with AECOPD. Twenty-one variables including arterial blood gas studies were analysed. RESULTS: The mean age was 61.2 years. The in-hospital mortality rate was 12.8%; 28.6% of patients required invasive mechanical ventilation and 37.2% required ICU care. In univariate analysis, aypotension at presentation (systolic blood-pressure < 90 mmHg) [p = 0.002, odds ratio

Estimating mortality and causes of death in Turkey: methods, results and policy implications.

BACKGROUND: Cause-specific mortality statistics are primary evidence for health policy formulation, programme evaluation, and epidemiological research. In Turkey, a partially functioning vital registration system in urban areas yields fragmentary evidence on levels and causes of mortality. This article discusses the application of innovative methods to develop national mortality estimates in Turkey, and their implications for national health development policies. METHODS: Child mortality levels from the Demography and Health Survey (DHS) were applied to model life tables to estimate age-speci

Prophylactic postnatal thyroid hormones for prevention of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have shown an association between transiently low thyroid hormone levels in preterm infants in the first weeks of life (transient hypothyroxinaemia) and abnormal neurodevelopmental outcome. Thyroid hormone replacement might prevent this. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether prophylactic thyroid hormones given to preterm infants without congenital hypothyroidism result in clinically important changes in neonatal and long term outcomes. SEARCH STRATEGY: The standard search strategy of the Neonatal Review Group was used. This included searches of the Cochrane Centr

Anticonvulsants for preventing mortality and morbidity in full term newborns with perinatal asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: Seizures are common following perinatal asphyxia and may exacerbate secondary neuronal injury by increasing cerebral metabolic demand, causing fluctuations in oxygenation and perfusion, and triggering the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. Anticonvulsant therapy has been used in infants with perinatal asphyxia in order to prevent seizures. However, long term anticonvulsant therapy may lead to inhibition of brain development. Therefore, the routine use of anticonvulsant therapy to prevent seizures following perinatal asphyxia needs to be evaluated. OBJECTIVES: To assess the e

Maternal mortality due to eclamptic and non-eclamptic hypertensive disorders: a challenge.

Eclamptic and non-eclamptic hypertensive disorders are responsible for high maternal and perinatal mortality, especially in developing countries. The present study was done in order to understand the trends of maternal deaths due to non-eclamptic and eclamptic hypertensive disorders by analysis of case records of women who died due to these disorders over a period of 20 years. Overall, hypertensive disorders contributed to 31% of maternal deaths, 24.7% due to eclampsia with a decreasing trend from 43% in block A to 8.8% in block E. Case fatality rate (CFR) among eclampsia decreased from 23.3%

Mortality and cancer incidence in males with Y polysomy in Britain: a cohort study.

The mortality and cancer incidence risks among males with Y polysomy are unknown because there have been no large long-term cohort studies carried out of such men. We conducted a cohort study of 667 men diagnosed with the abnormality in Britain since 1959 to compare their mortality and cancer incidence rates with those of the general population. Sixty deaths occurred during follow-up to December 2005, twice the number expected from general population rates (standardised mortality ratio (SMR) = 2.0 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5-2.6)). Significantly raised mortality was observed for diseases

Mortality & clinical characteristics of hospitalized adult patients with HIV in Pune, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: In India, data regarding mortality and clinical characteristics of hospitalized HIV-infected patients are sparse, which may limit the effectiveness of new hospital-based HIV programmes providing antiretroviral therapy (ART). The objective of our study was to determine mortality and clinical characteristics of hospitalized HIV-infected individuals in a high HIV prevalence region of India. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was done of known HIV-infected adults admitted to the Medical Service of a large, public hospital in Pune, India, from January 2002 to November 20

Pregnancy increases the risk of mortality in West Nile virus-infected mice.

West Nile fever outbreaks in the USA have caused over 700 human deaths, primarily due to neurological disease. The usual transmission route of West Nile virus (WNV) involves mosquito bites; however, alternative routes, including intrauterine infection, have also been reported. Here, the pathogenicity of WNV in mice during gestation has been investigated. An extremely high mortality rate was observed in pregnant mice (98 %, 60/61) compared with non-pregnant mice (52 %, 28/53; P<0.001), independent of the infecting dose or the week of pregnancy. Antibody titres were similar between pregnant and

[Reduce the mortality due to femur fractures via an integrated approach to the comorbidity].

Preliminary studies show that there is an annual increase in the number of operations for femur fractures in The Netherlands and that this increase can be ascribed totally to the increasing age of the population, even though the risk of falling has not increased. Although the hospital mortality in this category of patients has decreased, mainly as the result of a shortened hospital stay, the long-term mortality does not seem to have decreased in comparison to earlier analyses. The conclusion could well be that we in The Netherlands must be able, in the future, to reduce the long-term mortality

The impact of carotid plaque presence and morphology on mortality outcome in cardiological patients.

BACKGROUND: Carotid plaque severity and morphology can affect cardiovascular prognosis. We evaluate both the importance of echographically assessed carotid artery plaque geometry and morphology as predictors of death in hospitalised cardiological patients. METHODS: 541 hospitalised patients admitted in a cardiological division (age = 66 +/- 11 years, 411 men), have been studied through ultrasound Duplex carotid scan and successively followed-up for a median of 34 months. Echo evaluation assessed plaque severity and morphology (presence of heterogeneity and profile). RESULTS: 361 patients sho
