The International journal of clinical and experimental hypnosis2019eng
The feeling of automaticity reported by individuals undergoing a hypnotic procedure is an essential dimension of hypnosis phenomenology. In the present study, healthy participants rated their subjective experience of automaticity and resting-state arterial spin labelling (ASL) scans were acquired before and after a standard hypnotic induction (i.e., "neutral hypnosis"). The increase in perceived automaticity was positively associated with activity in the parietal operculum (PO) and seed-based coactivation analysis revealed additional associations in the anterior part of the supracallosal cingu

In the neurosurgical field, the evoked potential is employed for the monitoring of intraoperative nerve function. During evoked potential monitoring, surgical manipulation-related nerve dysfunction is detected, and functional localization/nerves in the cerebral cortex are identified to prevent postoperative neurological complications. It is important to reduce the contact resistance to 2 kOmega or less on the application of plate electrodes used for recording and prevent noise by bundling electrode leads, to ensure a stable evoked potential during surgery. In our laboratory, intraoperative mon

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been proposed as a possible treatment for psychiatric and neurological disorders characterized by focal brain excitability, such as major depression and action myoclonus. However, the mechanism of modulating excitability by rTMS is unclear. We examined the changes in high frequency oscillations (HFOs) of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) before and after slow rTMS over the right primary somatosensory cortex (0.5 Hz, 50 pulses, 80% motor threshold intensity). The HFOs, which represent a localized activity of intracortical inhibitory i

This study reviews the impact of encephalitis lethargica (EL) on concepts of behaviour and movement during the 1920s and 1930s. Clinicopathological correlations were imprecise but supported the role of subcortical structures in complex patterns of motor behaviour. This possibility challenged the widely assumed hegemony of the cerebral cortex. There was a perceived link between involuntary movements and reduced impulse control and also between parkinsonism and a defect in volition. Contemporary observers interpreted postencephalitic phenomena such as oculogyria in psychodynamic as well as in ne

The limited application of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for investigations of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients has already shown that deficits of the motor, cognitive and visual systems may be identified by differences in the patterns of activation in response to a suitable stimulus. In MS patients with unilateral optic neuritis, the area of activation in the primary visual cortex, measured by fMRI techniques, is dramatically reduced in response to stimulation of the affected eye. The latency of the major positive component of the visual evoked potential (VEP) recorded upon sti

Simultaneous consideration of EEG, neurological, and imaging data obtained with sequelae of ischemic stroke during rehabilitation allowed us to verify the organic nature of some EEG phenomena. It was shown that stroke-induced impaired circulation in the area of the middle brain artery gave rise to deviant local cortical electrical activity (EA) in the form of polymorphic theta and delta waves or groups of theta waves. The character of such activity depended on the lesion size and extent of blood supply deficit in the damaged area. Decrease in the lesion size and restoration of blood supply dur

Familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS) is an autosomal dominant, adult onset, neurological disorder caused by the degeneration of motor neurons of the cortex, brainstem and spinal cord. Recently, the defective gene in some FALS families was identified as the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) gene. However, SOD1 mutations are present in approximately 20% of patients with FALS. We have tested the genes of two more free radical detoxifying enzymes, Mn superoxide dismutase (SOD2) and catalase by single strand conformation analysis (SSCA) for mutations in the remaining FALS cases. No mutatio

The maturation of latency and scalp voltage topography of the simultaneously bilateral somatosensory evoked potential was studied in 53 neurologically intact pre-term and term infants, from 31 to 40 weeks post-menstrual age. Four peaks (N1, P1, N2 and P2) were reliably identified in all infants. The latency of each peak decreased as the infants matured. Each peak had a unique voltage scalp topography that remained stable as infants matured, even though the maps changed in amplitude intensity. N2 was large, easily identifiable with a central peak, and extremely stable in topography, suggesting

Fourteen of 330 patients with the clinical and laboratory supported definite diagnosis of Multiple Sklerose (MS) had epileptic seizures. The epilepsy of six patients probably originates from the MS. Four patients respectively suffered from genuin epilepsy or symptomatic epilepsy caused by other diseases than the MS. Most patients had GM, two GM and focal motor fits and one uncinatus fits. An epileptic focus in the EEG was evident in two patients. MRI- and CCT-scans frequently showed extensive cortex-neighboured lesions and multiple subcortical demyelination, especially localized in the tempora

Neuropsychological findings in 10 clinical cases of progressive supranuclear palsy are presented. Patients were aged 52 to 80 and the duration of their illness was 1 to 5 years. Severe psychological disturbances e.g. depression or outbursts of irritability were prominent features in 5 patients. Formal neuropsychological testing disclosed mental slowing, impaired attention, reduced verbal fluency and elaborated linguistic abilities, poor abstract thinking and reasoning, mild to moderate memory loss, dynamic apraxia, grasping, motor impersistence, imitation and utilization behaviour. The clinica

Frequent seizures and loss of motor, language, and intellectual skills necessitated care in an institution for the physically and mentally handicapped for 4 years after diagnosis of presumed Reye's syndrome in a 10-month-old boy. M obius syndrome was diagnosed and bilateral tarsorrhaphy performed for exposure keratitis. Postmortem examination revealed multiple old boundary zone infarcts in the cerebral cortex, small cavitated infarcts in basal ganglia and thalami, diffuse neuronal loss and gliosis, and a focus of old necrosis in the pons; brain stem herniation during the acute phase of Reye's

This study attempted to clarify the role of the cerebral cortex in neonatal behavior by administering the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale-Kansas revision to a hydranencephalic infant; particularly of interest were behaviors that are implicated in infant social responsiveness. The examination revealed extremely deviant responses on portions of the exam, including items that measure response decrement and orientation. However, this infant was observed to approximate normal neonatal responding on items relating to motor maturity and reactivity. Other findings included that some response decr

The effects of short term cerebellar stimulation on integrative functions as measured by standardized psychological tests were studied. The patient group consisted of 12 epilepsy patients undergoing chronic cerebellar stimulation as treatment for intractable seizures. Three comparison groups included nonstimulated epilepsy patients, stimulated cerebral palsy patients, and stimulated stroke patients. Cerebellar stimulation resulted in some alterations in test performance. Improvements occurred from first to second test administration for both stimulated and nonstimulated subjects, as a probable

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor and non-motor functions, significantly reducing patients' quality of life. No effective drug-based treatments are known to solve this problem. Non-drug therapies such as Yijinjing exercise have shown potential in improving cognitive and motor functions in PD patients. However, solid evidence must still be provided to support their clinical efficacy. This study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Yijinjing exercise interventions in PD patients and explore the underlying mechanisms between the co

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the selective and progressive loss of motor neurons from the spinal cord, brain stem, and motor cortex. Although the hallmark of ALS is motor neuron degeneration, astrocytes, microglia, and T cells actively participate. Pharmacological treatment with riluzole has little effect on the lifespan of the patient. Thus, the development of new therapeutic strategies is of utmost importance. The objective of this study was to verify whether human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) from adipose tissue have therapeutic poten

Recent studies have examined the changes in the activity of cannabinoid signaling system in multiple sclerosis (MS), as a way to explain the efficacy of cannabinoid compounds to alleviate spasticity, pain, tremor and other signs of this autoimmune disease. In the present study, we have further explored this issue by examining density, mRNA expression and activation of GTP-binding proteins for the cannabinoid CB1 receptor subtype in several brain structures of mice with chronic relapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (CREAE), a chronic model of MS that reproduces many of the pathologi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patients with ALS-FTD spectrum disorders (ALS-FTSD) have mixed motor and cognitive impairments and require valid and quantitative assessment tools to support diagnosis and tracking of bulbar motor disease. This study aimed to validate a novel automated digital speech tool that analyzes vowel acoustics from natural, connected speech as a marker for impaired articulation due to bulbar motor disease in ALS-FTSD.
METHODS: We used an automatic algorithm called Forced Alignment Vowel Extraction (FAVE) to detect spoken vowels and extract vowel acoustics from 1 minute audio

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of mirror neuron theory-based visual feedback therapy (VFT) on restoration of upper limb function of stroke patients and motor-related cortical function using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
METHODS: Hemiplegic stroke patients were randomly divided into two groups: a VFT group and a control (CTL) group. Sixteen patients in the VFT group received conventional rehabilitation (CR) and VFT for 8 weeks, while 15 patients in the CTL group received only CR. The Barthel Index (BI) was used to assess the activities of daily living at baseline and the

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neuromuscular disease characterized by both upper and lower motor neuron degeneration. While neuroimaging studies of the brain can detect upper motor neuron degeneration, these brain MRI scans also include the upper part of the cervical spinal cord, which offers the possibility to expand the focus also towards lower motor neuron degeneration. Here, we set out to investigate cross-sectional and longitudinal disease effects in the upper cervical spinal cord in patients with ALS, progressive muscular atrophy (PMA: primarily lower mo
