Goniometer measurement and computer analysis of wrist angles and movements applied to occupational repetitive work.

In epidemiological studies of occupational musculoskeletal disorders there is a need for quantitative exposure measurements of the physical work load. In studies of neck and upper limb disorders the so-called cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs), in particular the carpal tunnel syndrome, the positions and movements of the wrist are of special interest. A biaxial flexible electrogoniometer was used to measure continuously, with a sampling rate of 20 Hz, wrist flexion/extension and abduction/adduction angles up to 27 min. Evaluation of the influence of rotation on the goniometer showed some inhere

[Proposal of a concise index for the evaluation of the exposure to repetitive movements of the upper extremity (OCRA index)].

In the light of data and speculation contained in the literature, and based on procedures illustrated in a previous research project in which the authors describe and evaluate occupational risk factors associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs (WMSDs), this article proposes a method for calculating a concise index of exposure to repetitive movements of the upper limbs. The proposal, which still has to be substantiated and validated by further studies and applications, is conceptually based on the procedure recommended by the NIOSH for calculating the Lifting Ind

The assessment of general movements is a valuable technique for the detection of brain dysfunction in young infants. A review.

Recently, a new assessment technique by which to evaluate brain function in the fetus and newborn infant has been developed. The method is based on the assessment of the quality of General Movements (GMs). GMs are complex movements involving all parts of the body. They are present throughout fetal life and postnatally until about 3-4 months post-term. The persistent presence of abnormal GMs during the neonatal period and the absence of age-specific characteristics ("fidgety" movements) around 3 months-post term are both powerful predictors of the development of handicap.

[A case of morning glory syndrome associated with contractile movement of the optic disc and subretinal neovascularization].

We report a rare case of morning glory syndrome with choroidal neovascular membrane and contractile movement of the optic disc. A 12-year-old healthy boy was first seen in April 1992 with a chief complaint of transient visual loss in his left eye for 3 months. The diagnosis of morning glory syndrome was made by the characteristic optic nerve head. His visual acuity was 1.2 in both eyes. In August 1994, retinal hemorrhage associated with choroidal neovascular membrane was observed in the macula of his left eye, resulting in a decrease of visual acuity to 0.4. In October 1994, we observed contra

Decreased amniotic fluid volume at < 32 weeks of gestation is associated with decreased fetal movements.

The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between amniotic fluid volume (AFV) and fetal movements at < 32 weeks gestation as assessed by routine biophysical profile (BPP). From a database of 465 consecutive nonhypertensive, nondiabetic patients delivering at < 32 weeks gestation, patients with singleton, nonanomalous fetuses with AFV and fetal movements determined as part of a BPP assessment within 24 hours of delivery were studied. Amniotic fluid volume was scored 0 to 2, according to the following criteria: largest pocket in vertical diameter < 1 cm = 0; < 2 but > 1 cm = 1;

Electromyographic analysis of the sternohyoid muscle and anterior belly of the digastric muscle in head and tongue movements.

The sternohyoid muscle and anterior belly of the left digastric muscle were electromyographically studied in 20 young adult volunteer individuals. A surface monopolar electrode and a needle monopolar electrode, inserted into the muscle mass 1.0 cm apart were employed. The muscles acted during the following movements of the tongue; protraction, lateral movements to either side, and placement of the tip of the tongue on the hard and soft palate. It was in the latter movement that the most significant action potentials of the sternohyoid muscle were observed, which coincided with a major displace

Axial movements of rat mandibular incisors measured under artificial respiration with halothane anaesthesia.

The axial movements of rat incisors were recorded continuously for over 20 h. The rats were anaesthetized with halothane delivered by intratracheal intubation using an artificial respirator. A haemostatic clamp was used to immobilize the jaw and the displacement detector exhibited high resolution, good linearity and low drift. The previously impeded and unimpeded eruption rates (the average extrusive movements) were 406 and 548 microns/24 h, respectively. The previously unimpeded rate was lower than the normal unimpeded rates obtained by other investigators. It appears that the eruptive moveme

Ocular motor abnormalities in achiasmatic mutant Belgian sheepdogs: unyoked eye movements in a mammal.

We studied the eye movements of several members of a family of Belgian sheepdogs that includes achiasmatic mutants. Our aim was to identify the types of nystagmus and other ocular motor abnormalities exhibited by the mutants. We also recorded from several unaffected heterozygous carriers of the genetic mutation and from a normal Irish Setter. Mutant dogs exhibited nystagmus waveforms that were occasionally similar to those of humans with congenital nystagmus (CN). Foveating and braking saccades and foveation periods were seen in some waveforms. More common were pendular oscillations of both ey

Repetitive training of isolated movements improves the outcome of motor rehabilitation of the centrally paretic hand.

The effect of a standardized training on movements of the affected hand has been studied in 27 hemiparetic patients using a multiple baseline approach across individuals. The training consisted of repetitive hand and finger flexions and extensions against various loads and was carried out twice daily during 15-min periods. Grip strength (p < 0.006), peak force of isometric hand extensions (p < 0.05), peak acceleration (p < 0.05) of isotonic hand extensions as well as contraction velocities as indicators of motor performance significantly improved during the training period. In contrast to the

Rapid wrist movements in patients with essential tremor. The critical role of the second agonist burst.

Ballistic wrist flexion movements towards 15, 30 and 60 degrees visual targets were studied in a group of 17 patients with hereditary essential tremor. Compared with age-matched normal subjects (n = 16), there were three main kinematic differences: patients overshot the target a little more; the kinematic profile of their movements was more 'asymmetric' due to higher peak decelerations; and their movements initiated tremor. Ballistic movements performed by patients with essential tremor were associated with a triphasic pattern of agonist-antagonist-agonist muscle activity similar to that of no

Abnormal eye movements in blepharospasm and involuntary levator palpebrae inhibition. Clinical and pathophysiological considerations.

We report on four patients with involuntary eyelid closure and eye movement disorders. Three were healthy until the onset of their illness and one had a mild generalized choreoathetosis and dystonia due to kernicterus. Electromyographic recording revealed solely blepharospasm in two patients and blepharospasm in combination with involuntary levator palpebrae inhibition in the other two. The eye movement abnormalities were clinically characterized by inability to fix gaze and short or prolonged episodes of uncontrollable eye deviations accompanied, in two patients, by diplopia in horizontal or

Spondylolysis. Bending of the inferior articular processes of lumbar vertebrae during simulated spinal movements.

STUDY DESIGN: This was a cadaveric lumbar motion segment experiment. OBJECTIVES: To measure bending about the pars interarticularis during simulated flexion and extension movements, with and without high compressive forces. This was designed to indicate which activities are most likely to cause spondylolysis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The mechanical etiology of spondylolysis is controversial. METHODS: Motion segments were loaded to simulate: A, full flexion; B, full extension; C, high compression in flexed posture, and D, high compression in lordotic posture. Bending of the inferior artic

The interaction of perceived distance with the perceived direction of visual motion during movements of the eyes and the head.

A horizontally moving target was followed by rotation of the eyes alone or by a lateral movement of the head. These movements resulted in the retinal displacement of a vertically moving target from its perceived path, the amplitude of which was determined by the phase and amplitude of the object motion and of the eye or head movements. In two experiments, we tested the prediction from our model of spatial motion (Swanston, Wade, & Day, 1987) that perceived distance interacts with compensation for head movements, but not with compensation for eye movements with respect to a stationary head. [Opening and closing movements of the heart valves in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Confirmation of the cardiac pump theory ].

Cardiorespiratory arrest occurred in a 64-year-old man with severe triple-vessel coronary artery disease (status after two myocardial infarctions) and heart failure (ejection fraction of 20%). After intubation and starting resuscitation measures, transoesophageal echocardiography (TE) was performed to exclude electromechanical dissociation with ventricular tamponade. During the thoracic compression of closed-chest cardiac massage the aortic valve opened, while the mitral and tricuspid valves closed. During the relaxation phase the mitral and tricuspid valves rapidly opened, the aortic valve cl

Frontal eye field lesions impair predictive and visually-guided pursuit eye movements.

The study initially explored the frontal eye field's (FEF) control of predictive eye movements, i.e., eye movements driven by previous rather than current sensory signals. Five monkeys were trained to pursue horizontal target motion, including sinusoidal targets and "random-walk" targets which sometimes deviated from a sine motion. Some subjects also tracked other target trajectories and optokinetic motion. FEF ablations or cold lesions impaired predictive pursuit, but also degraded visually guided foveal pursuit of all targets. Unilateral lesions impaired pursuit of targets moving in both hor

On the role of calcium in indole-3-acetic acid movement and graviresponse in etiolated pea epicotyls.

To determine whether Ca2+ plays a special role in the early graviresponse of shoots, as has been reported for roots, we treated etiolated pea epicotyls with substances known to antagonize Ca2+ (La3+), to remove Ca2+ from the wall (spermidine, EGTA), to inhibit calmodulin mediated reactions (chlorpromazine), or to inhibit IAA transport (TIBA). We studied the effect of these substances on IAA and Ca2+ uptake into 7 mm long subapical 3rd internode etiolated pea epicotyl sections and pea leaf protoplasts, on pea epicotyl growth, and graviresponse and on lateral IAA redistribution during gravistimu

Limits of movement in the human knee. Effect of sectioning the posterior cruciate ligament and posterolateral structures.

We applied specific forces and moments to the knees of fifteen whole lower limbs of cadavera and measured, with a six degrees-of-freedom electrogoniometer, the position of the tibia at which the ligaments and the geometry of the joint limited motion. The limits were determined for anterior and posterior tibial translation, internal and external rotation, and varus and valgus angulation from zero to 90 degrees of flexion. The limits were measured in the intact knee and then the changes that occurred with removal of the posterior cruciate ligament, the lateral collateral ligament, the popliteus

Effects of pilocarpine on breathing movements in normal, chemodenervated and brain stem-transected fetal sheep.

1. We examined the effects on fetal breathing movements (FBM) and electrocortical activity (ECoG) of the administration of pilocarpine to three groups of fetal sheep in utero: one group had peripheral chemodenervation; one group had peripheral chemodenervation and transection of the brain stem at the level of the colliculi; a third group of sham-operated animals acted as a control. 2. Pilocarpine induced a period of FBM characterized by their high amplitude (ca. 24 mmHg) and low frequency (ca. 0.65 Hz). It also produced low-voltage ECoG. These effects were seen both in normoxia and in hypoxia.
