HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 24-year-old man with known abuse of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) was found with stupor and myoclonies on all extremities. He had been known to have ingested 2 ml of pure GBL every half an hour. Decubiti were detected on the knuckle of the right foot, on both elbows and at the rump.
INVESTIGATIONS: Laboratory findings revealed signs of severe rhabdomyolysis and renal failure as well as elevated markers of inflammation. Other routine laboratory parameters were normal. A toxicological screening revealed no signs of an acute intoxication.

UNLABELLED: We report an 18-month-old girl with rapidly progressive subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, whose non immunised mother had measles at the time of delivery. The patient presented with repetitive episodes of myoclonic jerks of the head and arms, followed by a drop of head and trunk with frequent falls. EEG, CSF studies and MRI confirmed the diagnosis. Despite therapy with isoprinosine and valproate, seizure activity continued and she became vegetative within 2 months, with severe spasticity and swallowing difficulties, and died at the age of 28 months. Early age of onset and rapid p

We report clinical, neuroradiological and neuropathological findings of monozygotic twin sisters born at 30 weeks' gestation, with pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) similar but not identical to type 2 PCH. They presented with hypertonia, jitteriness, spontaneous and provoked myoclonic jerks (hyperekplexia), apnoeic episodes, and progressive microcephaly. They died at 7 weeks of age from respiratory failure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Spinocerebellar ataxias are a diverse group of autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxias. SCA2 is a complex ataxia with various extracerebellar symptoms, including parkinsonism, dystonia, hyporeflexia, and cognitive impairment. ATXN2 is a modulator of neurologic disease: Expansions of at least 37 CAG (glutamine) repeats are pathogenic for SCA2, while expansions in the intermediate range (30-32) convey risk for the development of neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Homozygous variants are exceedingly rare. This study

BACKGROUND: Canine distemper is a disease with high morbidity and mortality in domestic and wild carnivores caused by Canine distemper virus (CDV). Respiratory, gastrointestinal, dermatological, ophthalmic, or neurological disorders occur in dogs with canine distemper. CDV replicates in the central nervous system and causes non-purulent encephalomyelitis. This causes damage to the brain and spinal cord.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to reveal brain damage caused by the canine distemper virus in dogs using selected brain damage biomarkers and to determine which of these biomarkers are d

BACKGROUND: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition characterized by asymmetric limb rigidity, apraxia, dystonia, and myoclonus, with no approved symptomatic or disease-modifying drug treatments. Neurologic music therapy (NMT)® employs evidence-based techniques targeting sensorimotor rehabilitation, and high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) modulates cortical excitability.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to evaluate the preliminary efficacy of active-HD-tDCS + NMT versus sham-HD-tDCS + NMT for upper-limb motor performance in individua

OBJECTIVE: Abrupt benzodiazepine (BDZ) withdrawal may induce nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE), but information regarding its clinical and EEG features is limited. Our aim was to better characterize this condition.
METHODS: Patients with NCSE according to Salzburg criteria secondary to abrupt BDZ withdrawal identified at our center (2009-2024) were included. Clinical data, seizure semiology, and EEG, were described using ILAE, ACNS, and Salzburg criteria; clinical response to BDZ was quantified using the NCSE response scale (NRS). Recurrences at long-term follow-up were documented.

Background and Objectives: Survival with favorable neurologic outcomes after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains elusive. Post-cardiac arrest syndrome (PCAS) involves myocardial and neurological injury, ischemia-reperfusion response, and underlying pathology. Neurologic injury is a crucial determinant of survival and functional outcomes, with damage caused by free radicals among the responsible mechanisms. This study explores the feasibility of adding intravenous vitamin C to the treatment of OHCA survivors, aiming to mitigate PCAS. Vitamin C, a nutrient with antioxidative and free r

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Propofol is a commonly utilized anesthetic for painless colonoscopy, but its usage is occasionally limited due to its potential side effects, including cardiopulmonary suppression and injection pain. To address this limitation, the novel compound ciprofol has been proposed as a possible alternative for propofol. This study sought to determine whether there are any differences in the safety and efficacy of propofol and ciprofol for painless colonoscopy.
DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial.
SETTING: Single-centre, class A tertiary hospital, November 2021 to November 2022.

BACKGROUND: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is a neurodegenerative disease diagnosed based on clinical manifestations such as asymmetrical parkinsonism, limb apraxia, and speech and language impairment. The background pathology of CBS is commonly a variety of proteinopathies, but association with cerebrovascular disease has also been reported. Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome (FCMS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by facio-pharyngo-glossal diplegia with automatic-voluntary movement dissociation presenting with bilateral paresis of the facial, lingual, pharyngeal and masticatory muscles. BACKGROUND: Dystonia is a rare movement disorder, in which patients suffer from involuntary twisting movements or abnormal posturing. Next to these motor symptoms, patients have a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity, suggesting a role for serotonin in its pathophysiology. This study investigates the percentage of DNA methylation of the gene encoding for the serotonin reuptake transporter (SLC6A4) in dystonia patients and the associations between methylation levels and presence and severity of psychiatric symptoms.
METHODS: Patients with cervical dystonia (n = 49), myoclonus dystonia (n

Life-limiting conditions in children in specialized pediatric palliative care (PPC) are manifold. The "Together for Short Lives" (TfSL) association established four disease categories, which represent the most common illness trajectories. Better understanding the palliative care needs and symptoms of children within these TfSL groups will result in improved anticipation of clinical problems and tailored care. During this retrospective single-center cohort study, 198 children, adolescents, and young adults (CAYAs) were in PPC. Mean age at referral was 8.7 years (range 0.0-25.0), mean duration o
