Effects of NH4+ on reflexes in cat spinal cord.

1. In deeply barbiturate-anesthetized animals. NH4+ decreases spinal excitatory synaptic transmission by neuronal depolarization and subsequent block of conduction of action potentials into presynaptic terminals of low-threshold (presumably Ia-) afferents. Because barbiturates by themselves depress excitatory synaptic transmission and may have modified the effects of NH4+, this study examines the effect of NH4+ on excitatory synaptic transmission in the unanesthetized animal. 2. The effects of NH4+ on monosynaptic and polysynaptic excitatory reflexes as well as di- and polysynaptic inhibition

Differential use-dependent (frequency-dependent) effects in single mammalian axons: data and clinical considerations.

The potential clinical scope of use-dependent block of conduction (UDB) was assessed by studying characteristics of UDB in vitro in individual mammalian axons. Single and repetitive stimulation was applied to rabbit cervical sympathetic and vagus nerves exposed to solutions containing lidocaine 0, 0.3, or 0.6 mmol/l (9.1 or 18.2 mg/dl) at 37 degrees C. Unit responses were recorded in dissected filaments or extracellularly in the vagus nodose ganglion. With lidocaine 0.3 mM, equilibrium conduction block, tested by single shocks, was rare. 40-Hz trains produced a significantly greater increase i

Clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of women with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

BACKGROUND: X-Linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 (CMTX1) is characterized by gender differences in clinical severity. Women are usually clinically affected later and less severely than men. However, their clinical presentation appears to be heterogenous. Our aim was to extend the phenotypic description in a large series of women with CMTX1. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 263 patients with CMTX1 from 11 French reference centers. Demographic, clinical, and nerve conduction data were collected. The severity was assessed by CMT Examination Score (CMTES) and Overall Neuropathy Limita

Subcutaneous tri-block copolymer produces recovery from spinal cord injury.

We have studied the ability of nonionic detergents and hydrophilic polymers to seal permeabilized membranes of damaged cells, rescuing them from progressive dissolution, degeneration, and death. We report that a single subcutaneous injection of the tri-block copolymer, Poloxamer 188 (P188) 6 hr after a severe compression of the adult guinea pig spinal cord is able to: (1). preserve the anatomic integrity of the cord; (2). produce a rapid recovery of nerve impulse conduction through the lesion; and (3). produce a behavioral recovery of a spinal cord dependent long tract spinal cord reflex. Comparative Outcomes of Anterior and Posterior Plating for Distal-Third Humerus Shaft Fractures.

PURPOSE: When treating distal-third humerus shaft fractures (HSFs) surgically, the optimal approach for plating is controversial. We conducted a retrospective multicenter study to investigate and compare the clinical outcomes of anterior and posterior plating in distal-third HSFs and the incidence of complications including iatrogenic radial nerve palsy. METHODS: We identified 116 patients from our multicenter trauma database who were diagnosed as having distal-third HSFs and who underwent surgical treatment, including intramedullary nailing between 2011 and 2020. We analyzed 50 cases treated

Predicting auditory tone-in-noise detection performance: the effects of neural variability.

Collecting and analyzing psychophysical data is a fundamental mechanism for the study of auditory processing. However, because this approach relies on human listening experiments, it can be costly in terms of time and money spent gathering the data. The development of a theoretical, model-based procedure capable of accurately predicting psychophysical behavior could alleviate these issues by enabling researchers to rapidly evaluate hypotheses prior to conducting experiments. This approach may also provide additional insight into auditory processing by establishing a link between psychophysical

Firing properties of single axons with cardiac rhythmicity in the human cervical vagus nerve.

Microneurographic recordings of the human cervical vagus nerve have revealed the presence of multi-unit neural activity with measurable cardiac rhythmicity. This suggests that the physiology of vagal neurones with cardiovascular regulatory function can be studied using this method. Here, the activity of cardiac rhythmic single units was discriminated from human cervical vagus nerve recordings using template-based waveform matching. The activity of 44 cardiac rhythmic neurones (22 with myelinated axons and 22 with unmyelinated axons) was isolated. By consideration of each unit's firing pattern

Anti-CNTN1 IgG3 induces acute conduction block and motor deficits in a passive transfer rat model.

BACKGROUND: Autoantibodies against the paranodal protein contactin-1 have recently been described in patients with severe acute-onset autoimmune neuropathies and mainly belong to the IgG4 subclass that does not activate complement. IgG3 anti-contactin-1 autoantibodies are rare, but have been detected during the acute onset of disease in some cases. There is evidence that anti-contactin-1 prevents adhesive interaction, and chronic exposure to anti-contactin-1 IgG4 leads to structural changes at the nodes accompanied by neuropathic symptoms. However, the pathomechanism of acute onset of disease

Influence of psychological variables on the diagnosis of facet joint involvement in chronic spinal pain.

BACKGROUND: Facet or zygapophysial joint pain is one of the common conditions responsible for chronic spinal pain. Controlled diagnostic blocks are considered the only means of reliable diagnosis of facet joint pain, due to the inability of physical examination, clinical symptoms, radiologic evaluation, and nerve conduction studies to provide a reliable diagnosis. The prevalence of facet joint pain has been established to be 15% to 45% of patients with low back pain, 39% to 67% of patients with neck pain, and 34% to 48% of patients with thoracic pain. However, using only a single block, false-

Does Diabetes Mellitus Influence Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been proposed as a risk factor for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but this remains controversial. We investigated the association between DM and CTS using both ultrasonography (US) and nerve conduction study (NCS) data. METHODS: We analyzed a prospectively recruited database of neuromuscular US and medical records of subjects who had undergone NCSs and electromyography for symptoms suggestive of CTS. Subjects were assigned to the follow groups: Group I, CTS with DM; Group II, CTS without DM; Group III, no CTS with DM; and Group IV, no CTS with
