Relations among speech, language, and reading disorders.

In this article, we critically review the evidence for overlap among three developmental disorders, namely speech sound disorder (SSD), language impairment (LI), and reading disability (RD), at three levels of analysis: diagnostic, cognitive, and etiological. We find that while overlap exists at all three levels, it varies by comorbidity subtype, and the relations among these three disorders are complex and not fully understood. We evaluate which comorbidity models can be rejected or supported as explanations for why and how these three disorders overlap and what new data are needed to better

Comparison of machine learning techniques with classical statistical models in predicting health outcomes.

Several machine learning techniques (multilayer and single layer perceptron, logistic regression, least square linear separation and support vector machines) are applied to calculate the risk of death from two biomedical data sets, one from patient care records, and another from a population survey. Each dataset contained multiple sources of information: history of related symptoms and other illnesses, physical examination findings, laboratory tests, medications (patient records dataset), health attitudes, and disabilities in activities of daily living (survey dataset). Each technique showed v

From pixels to pathology: Restoration diffusion for diagnostic-consistent virtual IHC.

Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining is the clinical standard for assessing tissue morphology, but it lacks molecular-level diagnostic information. In contrast, immunohistochemistry (IHC) provides crucial insights into biomarker expression, such as HER2 status for breast cancer grading, but remains costly and time-consuming, limiting its use in time-sensitive clinical workflows. To address this gap, virtual staining from H&E to IHC has emerged as a promising alternative, yet faces two core challenges: (1) Lack of fair evaluation of synthetic images against misaligned IHC ground truths, and (2)

AI lesion tracking in PET/CT imaging: a proposal for a Siamese-based CNN pipeline applied to PSMA PET/CT scans.

PURPOSE: Assessing tumor response to systemic therapies is one of the main applications of PET/CT. Routinely, only a small subset of index lesions out of multiple lesions is analyzed. However, this operator dependent selection may bias the results due to possible significant inter-metastatic heterogeneity of response to therapy. Automated, AI-based approaches for lesion tracking hold promise in enabling the analysis of many more lesions and thus providing a better assessment of tumor response. This work introduces a Siamese CNN approach for lesion tracking between PET/CT scans. METHODS: Our a

An Application for Skin Macules Characterization Based on a 3-Stage Image-Processing Algorithm for Patients with Diabetes.

Diabetic skin manifestations, previous to ulcers and wounds, are not highly accounted as part of diagnosis even when they represent the first symptom of vascular damage and are present in up to 70% of patients with diabetes mellitus type II. Here, an application for skin macules characterization based on a three-stage segmentation and characterization algorithm used to classify vascular, petechiae, trophic changes, and trauma macules from digital photographs of the lower limbs is presented. First, in order to find the skin region, a logical multiplication is performed on two skin masks obtaine

Enhancing vector autoregressive transformer with memory convolutional network for explainable end-to-end seizure prediction.

Accurate early prediction of epileptic seizures is critical for improving patient outcomes, yet it remains challenging due to significant patient heterogeneity, which often leads to inadequate feature representation and limited explainability in existing methods. To address these, this study proposes a novel memory convolutional network-enhanced vector autoregressive transformer (MemConvVAT) for end-to-end epileptic seizure prediction. The model primarily comprises two components: a vector autoregressive transformer (VAT) and a memory convolutional network (MemConv). Specifically, the VAT alig

PAC-KENReg: An interpretable hypergraph framework capturing nonlinear and dynamic functional connectivity for neuropsychiatric disease diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hypergraph-based analysis has become a pivotal method for modeling functional connectivity networks to elucidate neuropathological mechanisms in psychiatric disorders. However, existing approaches are constrained by two key limitations: their reliance on linear assumptions, which limits the capture of complex nonlinear interactions among brain regions, and their failure to incorporate the neurophysiological meaning of hyperedge weights. To address these challenges, this study introduces an enhanced hypergraph framework that integrates nonlinear modeling with biologica

An End-to-End CRSwNP Prediction with Multichannel ResNet on Computed Tomography.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a global disease characterized by poor treatment outcomes and high recurrence rates, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. Due to its complex pathophysiology and diverse clinical presentations, CRS is categorized into various subtypes to facilitate more precise diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis prediction. Among these, CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is further divided into eosinophilic CRSwNP (eCRSwNP) and noneosinophilic CRSwNP (non-eCRSwNP). However, there is a lack of precise predictive diagnostic and treatment methods, making research into acc

Retrosplenial Cortex Effects Contextual Fear Formation Relying on Dysgranular Constituent in Rats.

Animal contextual fear conditioning (CFC) models are the most-studied forms used to explore the neural substances of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In addition to the well-recognized hippocampal-amygdalar system, the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is getting more and more attention due to substantial involvement in CFC, but with a poor understanding of the specific roles of its two major constituents-dysgranular (RSCd) and granular (RSCg). The current study sought to identify their roles and underlying brain network mechanisms during the encoding processing of the rat CFC model. Rats with p

Differentiating hemispheric contributions to syntax and semantics in patients with left-hemisphere lesions.

Understanding the relationship between brain and cognition critically depends on data from brain-damaged patients since these provide major constraints on identifying the essential components of brain-behavior systems. Here we relate structural and functional fMRI data with behavioral data in 21 human patients with chronic left hemisphere (LH) lesions and a range of language impairments to investigate the controversial issue of the role of the hemispheres in different language functions. We address this issue within a dual neurocognitive model of spoken language comprehension in which core lin

In vivo mapping of incremental cortical atrophy from incipient to overt Alzheimer's disease.

Progressive brain atrophy is believed to be the Alzheimer's disease (AD) marker with the greatest evidence for validity. Mapping the topography of cortical atrophy throughout the stages of severity may allow the neural networks affected to be identified. Twenty healthy elderly persons (OH, MMSE 29.1 +/- 1.0), 11 patients with incipient AD (iAD, 26.5 +/- 2.0), 15 with mild AD (miAD, 23.5 +/- 2.2), and 15 with moderate AD (moAD, 16.5 +/- 2.0) underwent 3D magnetic resonance. Cortical pattern matching analysis was performed and maps of percent differences in gray matter distribution were computed

A Physics-Informed Neural Network Surrogate for Patient-Specific Hepatic Arterial Hemodynamics in Yttrium-90 Radioembolization: Network Architecture, Boundary-Condition Enforcement, and Data Efficiency.

Trans-arterial radioembolization using yttrium-90 (Y-90) microspheres treats unresectable liver cancer with radiation. The tumor-to-parenchyma dose ratio is mainly governed by the patient-specific hepatic arterial flow distribution, which transports the microspheres. Even though computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation can predict this flow distribution, its high computational cost and time limit intraprocedural application. To overcome this computational limitation, a physics-informed neural network (PINN) surrogate was developed to provide rapid predictions of flow distribution in a pat

Neural correlates of "analytical-specific visual perception" and degree of task difficulty as investigated by the Mangina-Test: a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study in young healthy adults.

The Mangina-Test is a neuropsychometric method for evaluating varying degrees of "analytical-specific perception" as they relate to learning abilities and disabilities. It consists of the identification of simple stimuli which are masked within a complex configuration according to their exact size, dimension, direction, spatial orientation, and shape within a limited span of time. This test has been successfully applied in clinical settings for the assessment of cognitive abilities and disorders in young and elderly populations. This investigation aimed to examine the neural correlates of anal

Dissecting Spectral Granger Causality Through Partial Information Decomposition.

OBJECTIVE: Granger causality (GC), a popular statistical method for the inference of directional influences between time series measured from a complex network, is sensitive to high-order (non-pairwise) interactions which fundamentally shape the collective network dynamics. This work introduces Partial Decomposition of Granger Causality (PDGC), a tool to elicit redundant and synergistic causal interactions among the subsystems of physiological networks. METHODS: We use the framework of partial information decomposition to dissect the multivariate GC from a set of driver random processes to a

Feature stabilization in convolutional neural networks using Proportional Integral Controller for lung nodule classification.

INTRODUCTION: Reliable classification of lung nodules from computed tomography (CT) images remains a challenging problem due to variations in image intensity, noise, and unstable feature representations during deep network training. Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved promising results in medical image analysis, their internal feature dynamics are often difficult to control, which can affect convergence stability and generalization, particularly when working with limited clinical data. METHOD: In this work, we propose a control-inspired CNN framework that incorporates

Fractal gradient divergence-tuned deep belief network for osteoporosis detection using X-ray images.

Osteoporosis is a major illness that reduces bone strength, increasing the likelihood of fractures. Various imaging modalities are employed in the prediction and diagnosis of osteoporosis, including X-ray and Computed Tomography (CT). To assess the risk of fractures and bone disease, various machine learning (ML) techniques have been utilized. However, accurate diagnosis based on X-ray images remains a major concern for osteoporosis prediction. To improve the accuracy of osteoporosis disease prediction and reduce time, a novel Transformed Sampling Fractal Gradient Divergence Tuned Deep Belief

Adaptive Changes in Neurovascular Properties With Binocular Accommodation Functions in Myopic Participants by 3D Visual Training: An EEG and fNIRS Study.

Although three-dimensional visual training (3DVT) has been used for myopia intervention, its neural mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, visual function was examined before and after 3DVT, while resting-state EEG-fNIRS signals were recorded from 38 myopic participants. A graph theoretical analysis was applied to compute the neurovascular properties, including static brain networks (SBNs), dynamic brain networks (DBNs), and dynamic neurovascular coupling (DNC). Correlations between the changes in neurovascular properties and the changes in visual functions were calculated. After 3D

A Disorder-Aware Computational Framework to Identify Structurally Tractable Targets in Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) remains a major cause of failure after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair and lacks effective pharmacologic therapies. Although epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is central to PVR pathogenesis, the structural determinants governing the tractability of EMT regulators, particularly those involving intrinsic disorder, remain poorly defined. We developed a disorder-aware, artificial intelligence-enabled computational framework to evaluate EMT-associated proteins in PVR and prioritize structurally tractable regulators for structure-based

Academia and industry in the age of artificial intelligence: a narrative review.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have fuelled a boom phase and promise to revolutionise many domains, including the traditional activities of academic medical centres (AMCs): biomedical research, education and healthcare services. Progress in AI is driven by three factors: (1) faster and cheaper processors (compute), (2) increasingly efficient training algorithms and neural network architectures and (3) an increase in electronically readable data. Outside of healthcare, industry investment dwarfs AI investment by governments. The largest computer clusters and datasets are now ma
