During the first half of 1991, five patients with displaced fractures of the humeral capitellum were managed by open reduction and fixation of the capitellar fragments with Herbert bone screws. All patients had stable, painfree elbows at follow-up, with no restriction of normal daily activities. There were no evidence of early avascular necrosis of capitellar fragments, even where soft tissue attachments of small fragments had been injured. This method of fixation allows accurate restoration of the articular surface of the humero-radial joint and may therefore contribute to the excellent funct

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess and compare elbow range of motion, triceps extension strength and functional results of type C (AO/OTA) distal humerus fractures treated with bilateral triceps tendon (BTT) approach and olecranon osteotomy (OO). At the same time, we are also trying to know whether BTT approach can provide sufficient vision for comminuted intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus, and whether it is convenient to convert to the treatment to total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) or OO.
METHODS: Patients treated with OO and BTT approaches for type C distal humerus f

UNLABELLED: Seizure induced fractures are uncommon and usually involve long bone fractures like proximal humerus, proximal femur, shoulder dislocations etc. These occur due to intense muscle contractions or may result from indirect trauma post-seizure episode in the patient. Acetabulum fracture with central head dislocation, as seen in this case, is very rare following a seizure episode. It was further complicated by the presence of Hepatitis-B and dialysis dependent CKD both of which impact the surgical outcomes as well as pose challenges in the management of patient in the perioperative peri

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the antiosteoporotic efficacy of zoledronic acid (ZOL) with denosumab (DEN) in osteoporosis patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
METHODS: This was a prospective, open-label, nonrandomized clinical study. Osteoporotic women with T2DM aged 50 to 80 years were enrolled and assigned to either the ZOL group (n = 45) or the DEN group (n = 75) based on patient preference. The efficacy endpoint included the percent change from baseline in bone mineral density (BMD), bone turnover markers, and the fracture risk evaluated by the fracture risk assessment

Fractures secondary to seizure activity are a well-known complication in patients with epilepsy; however, periprosthetic fractures following total hip arthroplasty (THA) due to seizures are rarely documented. Nonadherence to anti-epileptic medications (AEMs) significantly increases the risk of seizure recurrence, particularly in individuals with a history of seizure-induced skeletal trauma. We present the case of a 27-year-old male with a documented history of epilepsy who sustained a right periprosthetic femoral fracture following a generalized tonic-clonic seizure. One year prior, the patien

Osteonecrosis of the humeral trochlea is an uncommon but challenging complication of pediatric elbow fractures. We herein report a case of osteonecrosis of the trochlea, a rare and delayed complication of a supracondylar humerus fracture that led to a chronic dislocation of the ulna. A five-year-old boy arrived at the Emergency Room following a fall from a tree on an outstretched hand with an extended elbow. Radiographic studies of the right elbow confirmed the diagnosis of right supracondylar fracture. Open reduction and internal fixation by two Kirschner wires was carried out, followed by im

A dislocation or break of the tarsometatarsal joint in the foot is referred to as a Lisfranc fracture, sometimes called a Lisfranc injury. It can be caused by less stressful mechanisms like a twisting fall as well as high-energy events like car crashes or falls from heights. Swelling, bruises, and midfoot pain that gets worse when standing or walking are some of the symptoms. The damage may only affect the ligaments or the foot's bony structures. Nonoperative or surgical treatment may be part of the management, depending on how severe the injury is. In order to realign and stabilize the bones,

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-associated osteoporosis (PAO) is a rare condition characterized by reduced bone mineral density during the third trimester or lactation. Multiple risk factors, such as genetic, sedentariness, and 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency, are associated with PAO. In the majority of cases, PAO is presented with a compression fracture in vertebras, but in our case, it presented with a fracture of the femoral neck. Case Presentation: A 29-year-old, gravida one woman, developed right hip joint pain during the gestational age 34 weeks who referred to our clinic. Despite conservative man

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical efficacy and complications of limited internal fixation combined with external fixation (LIFEF) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in the treatment of Pilon fracture.
METHODS: We searched databases including Pubmed, Embase, Web of science, Cochrane Library and China Biology Medicine disc for the studies comparing clinical efficacy and complications of LIFEF and ORIF in the treatment of Pilon fracture. The clinical efficacy was evaluated by the rate of nonunion, malunion/delayed union and the excellent/good rate assessed by Mazur ankle score. The c

INTRODUCTION: Perilunate and lunate dislocations are uncommon high energy injuries and have extensive soft tissue, cartilaginous and bony damage. The most common pattern is trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture dislocation which constitutes approximately 50% of these injuries. Unusual injury pattern like Scaphocapitate syndrome can occur with fracture through scaphoid waist and capitate that rotates the proximal capitate 180° so that its proximal articular surface points distally. With this case report, we would like to present a novel presentation of an uncommon wrist injury.

PURPOSE: To compare the outcome after early versus late surgery for closed ankle fractures in terms of the length of hospital stay and infection rate.
METHODS: Records of 95 men and 119 women aged 14 to 92 (mean, 46) years who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for ankle fractures during three 6-month periods in 2004, 2007, and 2010 were reviewed. 82 and 132 patients underwent surgery <24 hours and >24 hours after presentation, respectively. The most common reason for delayed surgery was unavailability of the operation theatre, followed by delayed admission to the fracture clinic

BACKGROUND: Operative treatment of displaced proximal humeral fractures often results in poor functional outcome. We report a technique that provides improved rotational stability of the fracture and thus allows early functional treatment.
METHODS: Seventy-one consecutive patients (67 +/- 18 years) with displaced fractures of the proximal humerus (two-part, n = 10; three-part, n = 41; four-part, n = 20) were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using two one-third tubular plates on the anterior and lateral aspects of the proximal humerus. Passive motion was started on the third pos

Lower limb amputation is associated with progressive loss of bone mineral density (BMD) in the residual limb, particularly at the amputated-side proximal femur. However, proximal femoral fractures in working-age individuals with transfemoral amputation who are independently ambulatory with a prosthesis remain insufficiently described. We report the cases of two working-age men who sustained ipsilateral proximal femoral fractures after minor falls at home while not wearing their prostheses. Case 1 sustained a left femoral neck fracture classified as Garden grade I six years after amputation, wh

BACKGROUND: Fractures occurring at or near the distal tip of a hip prosthesis with a stable femoral stem (Vancouver type-B fractures) are associated with many complications because of the inherently unstable fracture pattern. Locking compression plates use screws that lock into the plate allowing multiple points of unicortical fixation. Such unicortical fixation may lower the risk of damage to the cement mantle or a stable femoral stem during the treatment of a periprosthetic femoral fracture. The purpose of this study was to analyze clinically and radiographically a group of patients with a V

We report here a rare case of insufficiency fracture at the distal diaphysis of the radius in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after synovectomy combined with the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure. A 71-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with RA had been consecutively treated with several disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. She had undergone synovectomy of the right wrist combined with the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure, due to a tendon rupture, 2 years before the current presentation (first visit). Although she had not experienced any recent trauma, the wrist pain had increased after she had l
