Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) is a rare, destructive temporomandibular joint disease characterised by progressive resorption of the condyles. This case report presents a record of an orthodontically treated patient with ICR with favourable posttreatment remodelling of the condyles. An 18-year-old woman sought treatment for ICR. A severe Class II high-angle facial pattern with resorption of bilateral condyles was evident. The treatment plan was determined after careful examination of condylar radiographs and comprised forward rotation of the mandible through full-arch intrusion with micr

Drug-influenced gingival enlargement (DIGE) and reduced bone support caused by periodontitis are two of the etiologic factors for pathologic tooth migration (PTM). Comprehensive management, including surgical, orthodontic, and prosthodontic treatment, is usually required for recovery from severe DIGE and PTM. An 85-year-old Taiwanese male with a history of hypertension and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM) visited our dental department for severe gingival enlargement and spontaneous bleeding. He was diagnosed as having advanced periodontitis and DIGE. Remarkable PTM occurred on the front sex

This case report describes the treatment of a 25-year-old woman with a severe open bite. This patient presented a grade Ⅲ open bite, considerably thin alveolar bone, and evident labial buccal and lingual root form. The open bite was corrected by fixed orthodontic treatment and masticatory exercises. However, the increased pressure in the labial muscle caused by lip muscle exercise suppressed the canines, which resulted in the protrusion of the apices of canine roots out of the alveolar bone. Afterward, HX brackets, instead of self-locking, were used and bonded reversely in the occlusal-gingiva

BACKGROUND: Severe damage to the tooth, periodontal ligament, and pulpal tissue often occurs with intrusive luxation, and outcomes are quite unpredictable because of the variable ways in which the injury may occur, which influences both the choice of treatment and prognosis.
CASE REPORT: This case presents a novel method for the management of an intruded permanent maxillary central incisor with an immature apex. At first, watchful waiting for spontaneous re-eruption was the chosen treatment option. A palatal gingivectomy was performed and endodontic access was established, following which, an

INTRODUCTION: Lesions of nonendodontic origin may mimic apical periodontitis. Central giant cell lesions (CGCLs) are aggressive or nonaggressive benign idiopathic intraosseous lesions of the jaw. This report describes a case of a CGCL in the periapical region of teeth #21-#26 of a 17-year-old female who sought orthodontic care because of a change in the position of tooth #23.
METHODS: Clinical examination revealed mild facial asymmetry caused by increased volume in the mental region and cortical bone expansion but no cortical disruption. A panoramic radiograph showed a well-defined radiolucen

BACKGROUND: Hyperdontia is a disorder of odontogenesis characterised by excess teeth. Many complications can be associated with supernumerary teeth, such as crowding, tooth displacement, diastema, deep caries, retention or impaction, delayed eruption or ectopic eruption of adjacent teeth, aesthetic problems, neuralgic manifestations, root resorption of adjacent teeth, and dentigerous cyst formation with significant bone destruction. Treatment of hyperdontia depends on the area and number of supernumerary teeth, and also on the presence of pathologic processes that can affect them and/or the te

UNLABELLED: Ectopic eruption with impaction of maxillary permanent canine teeth is a frequently encountered clinical problem. Surgical exposure and attachment of a gold chain to impacted maxillary canines is often required in order to bring them into the dental arch and to allow good alignment. The principle of radiographic parallax is employed to determine whether the impacted canine is placed buccal or palatal to adjacent teeth. Good flap design allows adequate access to the impacted tooth. Bone removal should be adequate to free the impacted crown to its greatest circumference. An orthodont

This in vitro study was conducted to evaluate a method to obtain reproducible periapical radiographs, using individualized positioning devices, of upper central incisors submitted to simulated orthodontic movement. Linear measurements of tooth length were carried out on 29 extracted human central incisors. The teeth were radiographed in a tissue simulator, at different inclinations in the bucco-lingual direction (0 initial, 0 control, -10, -5, +5, and +10 degrees). The radiographs were digitized and quantitative analysis of tooth length was carried out using an electronic ruler. The linear mea

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a heterogeneous group of connective tissue heritable disorders. EDS type IV is a rare form that presents typical clinical signs, such as easy bruising and haematomas at sites of trauma, skin manifestations (translucent skin with visible veins), and joint hyperlaxity. To illustrate the dermatological features and describe an aggressive periodontitis, a symptom not yet reported in this EDS type, we present a case of a 23-year-old young man. This patient has been suffering from bruised skin, haematomas, and varicose veins in his legs. These lesions, typical of EDS

The ligand receptor activator of NFkappaB (RANKL) plays an important role in osteoclast formation. However, very little is known about the relationship between external apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment and RANKL. We hypothesized that compressive force is responsible for RANKL formation and up-regulation of osteoclastogenesis in periodontal ligament (PDL) cells from patients with severe orthodontically induced external apical root resorption. RANKL and osteoprotegerin (OPG) production, TRAP-positive cells, and resorptive pits were determined. The increase of RANKL and the dec

BACKGROUND: Gingival fibromatosis is a rare condition characterized by a generalized enlargement of the buccal and lingual aspects of the attached and marginal gingiva.
METHODS: This case report describes the periodontal management of a 13-year-old female patient with gingival fibromatosis associated with Zimmermann-Laband syndrome. The patient presented with gingival enlargement involving the maxillary and the mandibular arches, anterior open bite, and non-erupted teeth. Periodontal treatment included gingivectomy in all four quadrants.
RESULTS: Histopathologic evaluation of the excised tis

From anatomic and functional aspects the stomatognathic system and the upper cervical spine are closely interlinked. Together with complex neuromuscular relationships, this gives rise to an important field of cooperation between orthodontics and orthopedics. The literature appeals for close interdisciplinary cooperation for patients with syndromes and for those with torticollis and scoliosis. Since orthopedic points of contact are obvious in these special cases, orthopedic aspects are now being taken increasingly into account in farther-reaching studies. With the rising popularity of manual me

The impacted palatal canine requires a combination of both surgical and orthodontic management. Two types of approach are commonly used: simple exposure, or exposure with bracketing at the time of surgery. In this study 104 consecutively treated patients with palatally impacted canines were examined at two centres, one at which the ectopic tooth was surgically exposed alone and the other where an orthodontic bracket was bonded to facilitate early traction, and the flap replaced. The aim was to compare the outcome and complication rate for each type of procedure. In 30.7 per cent of all cases e

The present cross-sectional study was based on orthopantomograms of 1245 Greek children (590 males and 655 females), whose ages ranged from 6 years 10 months to 14 years. Three orthodontic practices were the source of these orthopantomograms which were taken before the start of orthodontic treatment. The resorption process of the deciduous mandibular canine and molar roots was divided into five stages and the root formation process of their permanent successors into eight stages. The percentage distribution of the deciduous root resorption stages for each root formation stage of the correspond

The long axis of the maxillary incisor root is not always identical to that of the crown. Instead, there is appreciable variation in the crown-root angle, generally with the crown torqued lingual to the root axis. In orthodontic cases assessed before and at the end of full-banded treatment, the crown-root angle was significantly deflected in the Class III molar relationship series, notably so in moderate to severe cases where the maxillary incisors are constrained lingual to the lower arcade. Apical root resorption was not significantly associated with the crown-root angle before or after comp

Nasal respiratory function and its relationship to growth development of the craniofacial structure has been a subject of interest and controversy for over 100 years. The otolaryngologist as the primary physician with responsibility of managing the upper respiratory tract is obviously most intimately involved with diagnosis and treatment of upper respiratory tract problems. To further evaluate the evidence regarding causes of craniofacial growth, a study was done involving pretreatment orthodontic subjects and their manifestation of classic signs of adenoid facies ("long-face syndrome"). BACKGROUND: Increased interest in intraoral devices like Bionator III, reverse twin block, and removable mandibular retractor (RMR), which modify tissues beneficially. The emerging Orthodontic Removable Traction Appliance (ORTA™) or the lower-clear-plate-based intermaxillary traction (LCP-IMT) has shown promising results, especially in stimulating maxillary growth and inhibiting mandibular growth in Class III malocclusion. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of the LCP-IMT against the RMR during the early correction of Class III deformities in growing patients regarding skeletal, dental,
