Challenges of liver transplantation programs in low- and middle-income countries: An experience from Sri Lanka.

Liver diseases lead to 1.3 million deaths per year around the world, the majority of which are secondary to cirrhosis. In the management of liver diseases in chronic and acute conditions, liver transplant (LT) plays a major role in improving the survival and quality of life of patients. LT programmes require the technical capabilities in performing the pre-transplant evaluation, transplant surgery and post-transplant care supported by adequate infrastructure and a set of trained teams. Globally, there were 28,000 deceased donor LTs, and 14,000 living donor LTs were performed in 2021. In the So

Genetic association of vitamin D receptor gene with female infertility.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is defined as failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. It affects 15% of couples globally and 22% of couples within Pakistan. Female infertility can be caused by numerous genetic or environmental factors including hormone imbalances and exposure to chemicals or radiation. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among the adult population was reported to be 14-59% with a higher prevalence in Asian countries. Furthermore, the expression of Vitamin D receptor (VDR) can play a vital role in the reproductive organs of females. Hence,

Dermoscopic Nail Disorders in School-Going Children.

Introduction The majority of nail diseases in children are comparable to those in adults, while there are some physiological changes that start to happen around this age and go away over a few years. These conditions could be symptoms of infections and systemic illnesses. Pediatric nail disorders are typically easy to diagnose clinically, although there are occasionally conditions that masquerade as juvenile nail problems. Dermoscopy has grown in favour as a rapid, easy, non-invasive clinical procedure for examining nail diseases. This study aims to assess dermoscopic findings of child nail di

Strategies for the Long-Term Preservation of Site for Future Implantation of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs): Two Decades of Experience.

Introduction Implantation of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) is an art of science. As the volume of implantation has increased worldwide, so has the rate of complications. Infection, fibrosis, lead and device erosion, lead displacement, right ventricle perforation, lead fracture, and insulation break are the common complications in the implantation process. This exposes the patient for reopening and threatens the implantation for further complication due to infection, fibrosis of veins, failure to retrieve the implanted wire, and failure to re-implant the device on the same site

Maternal FMR1 alleles expansion in newborns during transmission: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The CGG repeats in the 5' untranslated region of the fragile X mental retardation 1 gene (FMR1) gene shows increased instability upon maternal transmission. Maternal FMR1 intermediate (45-54 repeats) and premutation (PM: 55-<200 repeats) alleles usually expand to full mutation (>200 repeats) alleles in offspring and consequently, cause fragile X syndrome (FXS) in them. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, Pakistani pregnant women in prenatal care were first screened for FMR1 expanded alleles. In the follow-up, pregnancy outcomes in women carrying FMR1 expanded alleles were re
