Parental anxiety in pediatric day surgery: Identifying high-risk families for targeted preoperative support.

AIM: Preoperative parental anxiety is an important yet often overlooked factor that may adversely affect perioperative outcomes and compromise the quality of informed consent. This study aimed to evaluate parental anxiety levels in pediatric day surgery patients using the validated Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study enrolled parents of children undergoing elective day surgery at a tertiary pediatric surgery center over a six-month period. Parents completed APAIS and STAI que

Parental motivations, facilitators, and barriers to participating in a pediatric vaccine trial in Kathmandu, Nepal: A qualitative study.

Pediatric vaccine trials are essential for generating evidence to inform immunization policy, yet their success depends on effective recruitment and sustained participation of children and their caregivers. Understanding parental decision-making is particularly important in low- and middle-income countries, where sociocultural dynamics, trust, and access to healthcare may shape willingness to participate in research. This qualitative study explored parental motivations, facilitators, and barriers to participation in a pediatric vaccine clinical trial conducted in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. Semi-

A systematic review on parental vaccine hesitancy for childhood immunizations in the European region: Can findings be generalized?

Vaccine hesitancy (VH) for childhood immunizations has been widely studied, but no review has synthesized evidence across Europe. This review addresses that gap using both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. A systematic search on February 5th, 2025, was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed and Web of Science to assess the generalizability of findings regarding parental VH regarding childhood vaccinations (excluding HPV and Influenza) across the WHO European Regions. Forty-nine articles published between January 2015 and December 2024 in English, Dutch or French were included. Using WHO's 3C mod

Parent-Adolescent Informant Discrepancies and Adolescent Adjustment Outcomes: A Directional Comparison and Associations with Family Functioning.

Informant discrepancies between parents and adolescents have been increasingly recognized as a meaningful construct with demonstrated implications for treatment outcomes in clinical populations. However, less is known about their relevance to adolescent adjustment in community samples, their domain-specific associations across internalizing and externalizing problems, and the role of family functioning in these associations. This exploratory study examined whether parent-overreporting versus adolescent-overreporting of adolescents' internalizing and externalizing problems was associated with a

Culturally Embedded Inner Strengths as Predictors of Resilience in Emerging Adults Following Childhood Parental Divorce.

Parental divorce, as an adverse childhood experience, may disrupt family systems and exert enduring effects on psychological development, with impacts becoming particularly salient during emerging adulthood, a stage characterized by identity exploration and increasing autonomy. Within the Thai cultural context, inner strengths grounded in Buddhist values may serve as important resources for resilience. This study examined associations between inner strength dimensions derived from the Ten Perfections (Pāramīs) and resilience among emerging adults who experienced parental divorce in childhood.

A Scoping Review and Synthesis of Qualitative Evidence Reporting Stakeholders' Conceptualization of Child to Parent Violence and Abuse.

Child and Adolescent to Parent Violence and Abuse (CAPVA) is a significant social issue, but to date, there is limited understanding of how it is conceptualized by different stakeholders. This scoping review and qualitative synthesis aimed to: (a) Map the concepts used by stakeholders to describe CAPVA and (b) Generate a theoretical model to explain how stakeholders conceptualize CAPVA in terms of context, conditions, mechanisms, and outcomes. Searches were conducted in eleven bibliographic databases in June 2023 and updated in December 2024. Supplementary searches were conducted, including fo

Caresses and coos: Examining long-term effects of a perinatal depression preventive intervention on parental warmth.

Parental warmth plays a critical role in child development and can have long-term impacts on attachment and other psychosocial outcomes. Perinatal depression-depression occurring during pregnancy or the first year postpartum-can hinder parenting practices such as parental warmth, as symptoms of depression may render mothers less sensitive and responsive to their children's cues and needs. This study explores whether recipients of Mothers and Babies (MB), a cognitive-behavioral perinatal depression preventive intervention, exhibit greater parental warmth than participants receiving community-ba

A qualitative study to inform a parental education intervention for unintentional child injury prevention in rural Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: Unintentional home injuries are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five in Nepal, particularly in rural areas. Despite this burden, culturally appropriate community-based prevention strategies remain limited. This study explored community perspectives to inform the design and delivery of a parental education intervention for childhood home injury prevention. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted in Sunkoshi Rural Municipality, Sindhupalchok District, in December 2024. Seven focus group discussions were held with 56 mothers of preschool-aged chil

Parental hope in paediatric palliative care: a systematic review of the ethical issues in evidence-based literature.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review aims to raise awareness of the concept of parental hope, which is distinct from the idea of agency – acting on behalf of someone else. Parental hope is an important factor in end-of-life care, particularly in light of recent advances in perinatology, neonatology, and paediatric palliative care (PPC). Parenting involves autonomous agency – acting and thinking on one's own behalf – as well as making decisions for one's children. Consequently, parental permission, authority and decision-making are integral aspects of parental attitudes towards their children in

"You feel alone in the world": Support experiences of parentally bereaved children - A constructivist grounded theory.

In the UK, a parent dies every 22 minutes, significantly affecting children's mental health, education, and social well-being. Yet little is known about children's lived experiences of bereavement and support. Developed with public involvement, this qualitative study employed constructivist grounded theory. In-depth virtual interviews were conducted with eleven parentally bereaved children aged ten to eighteen. Iterative data analysis used the constant comparative method. Analysis constructed five themes: (1) What helps, (2) Talking on your terms, (3) A tornado of emotions, (4) Difficulties ac

Parental Perspectives on an Educational Tool for Values-Informed Biobanking Consent in Pediatric Oncology: A Pilot Project.

Parents of children with cancer describe experiencing gaps in their knowledge and recall after providing biobanking informed consent. Following the Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence in Education Guidelines, we developed a biobanking educational website. This pilot project assessed parental perspectives on the content that was most valuable and relevant to their decision-making. Surveys and a focus group revealed that the website adequately covered the values-informed topics relevant to consent. Such educational tools have the potential to enhance interactive communication

The Role of Parental Influences in Chinese Adolescents' Academic Achievement through Shaping Friendship Network Dynamics.

Parents and friends are critical social influences on adolescents’ academic achievement, yet how they function together within dynamic friendship networks remains insufficiently understood. This study examined how parental influences (autonomy support, behavioral control, psychological control, and educational expectations) interact with friendship selection and influence processes to shape academic achievement of Chinese adolescents. A total of 1,419 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 12.35, SD = 3.04; 46.4% girls) participated in four-wave surveys across two years. Longitudinal social network analy

Silent wounds: violence and adverse experiences in parents caring for terminally ill children in palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Primary caregivers of paediatric palliative care patients-mostly women-are disproportionately exposed to adverse events and violence, both directly related to the experience of disease and to other stressful life events. These experiences have been associated with a higher risk of psychopathology, which in turn impacts the children under their care. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of violence among primary caregivers of palliative care patients in a children's hospital in Mexico City and to analyse how these experiences affect their caregiving capacity. Trade-offs in avian parental care: a review of theory and meta-analysis of brood size manipulations.

The selective forces shaping parental care have been studied for over 50 years. While theoretical and experimental work has yielded qualitative progress, the large body of empirical work testing predictions about parental investment based on life-history trade-offs has yet to be synthesized. We first provide an overview of the core life-history theory exploring how selection might shape parental care. We then conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on studies that experimentally manipulated brood size in birds, a widely used experimental approach to manipulate parental investment. We ext

Childhood trauma, emotion regulation, and depressive symptoms in parents and adolescents: Actor-partner interdependence analysis.

Parental childhood trauma exerts profound impacts on both their own and their offspring's psychopathological problems such as depressive symptoms. The underlying mechanisms of these effects, particularly from the perspective of parent-child interdependence, still need further exploration. This study adopted the actor-partner interdependence model to investigate the associations between parental childhood trauma and parental and adolescent depressive symptoms, and the mediating roles of parental and adolescent emotion regulation difficulties in the relations. This study included 125 eligible pa
