Parental acceptance and knowledge of varicella vaccination in relation to socioeconomics in Sweden: A cross-sectional study.

Varicella infection is a highly contagious disease which, whilst mild in most cases, can cause severe complications. Varicella vaccination is available privately in Sweden and is currently being reviewed for inclusion in the Swedish Public Health Agency's national immunisation program (NIP). A cross-sectional study of parents of Swedish children aged 1-8 years (n = 2212) was conducted to understand parental acceptance, beliefs and knowledge around varicella infection and vaccination. Respondents generally viewed varicella infection as a mild disease, with only a small proportion aware of poten

Parental Education May Differentially Impact Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Phenotype Risk.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (PIBDs: Crohn's disease [CD], ulcerative colitis [UC]) is on the rise around the world. Yet, the critical risk factors for this rising incidence are not well understood. Demographic characteristics of PIBD may improve our understanding of their developmental origins and aid in prevention. METHODS: Four hundred eighty-eight consecutive PIBD patients diagnosed at Texas Children's Hospital from 13 counties around Houston were studied. An annual incidence map was created by ZIP code of residence at diagnosis by using ArcGIS and th

"Wonderful! We've just missed the bus." - Parental use of irony and children's irony comprehension.

Irony is one of the linguistic means in which intended and expressed meaning diverge. It serves social-communicative functions, requires the understanding of the speaker's mental state and its comprehension takes place at an advanced stage of language acquisition. In the present study, we investigated 8-year old's irony comprehension and social skills and asked their parents about their preferred use of irony towards their children. We then compared children with the highest scores in irony comprehension test with those with lower scores. The full sample included 46 families from Poland. Resul

Inflated Responsibility Beliefs in Paediatric OCD: Exploring the Role of Parental Rearing and Child Age.

Cognitive-behavioural models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) propose that inflated responsibility beliefs are central to the maintenance of the disorder and are proposed to originate during early childhood via experiences of harsh and/or controlling parenting. The current study aimed to examine the associations between perceived parental rearing behaviours, inflated responsibility/threat beliefs, and OCD severity and impairment in children (aged 7-12 years) and adolescents (aged 13-17 years) with OCD (n = 136). Results indicated that for younger children, greater child perceptions of ov

Family Sexuality Communication: Parent Report for Autistic Young Adults Versus a Comparison Group.

Families are a critical context for healthy sexuality development. This study characterized family sexuality communication for autistic adults (age 18-30) without intellectual disability (n = 117) versus a neurotypical comparison group (n = 319). Parent-reported number of sexuality topics covered did not significantly differ by gender or autism/comparison group. Parents of autistic adults who covered few or no topics (31%) reported higher religiosity, lower comfort and self-efficacy, and were less likely to say that the adult expressed attraction or desire for relationships. Parents of autisti

Complete Republication: Fall Injury while the Parent Is Operating a Bicycle with an Infant in a Baby Carrier.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric emergency physicians commonly experience cases of infantile trauma as a result of a child falling from the arms or the back of a parent while the parent is operating a bicycle. METHODS: 1. We conducted a retrospective case-series study which included children younger than 1 year who were injured after falling from the arms or the back of the parent while the latter was operating a bicycle. 2. We conducted a dynamics experiment by recreating the circumstances of the accident using dummies representing a 6-month-old infant being carried on the back of the mother. We asse

Feasibility of an Online, Interactive Body Mass Index Parental Notification Letter (e-BMI).

School-based body mass index (BMI) screening is required in 50% of states with parent notification letters distributed among 11 of those states. Additional research is needed to effectively communicate screening results to parents. We conducted a pilot investigation of parent acceptability of an electronic, interactive BMI parental notification letter (e-BMI) along with the feasibility of implementing an e-BMI letter in the school setting. In addition, we assessed parental attitudes and practices regarding their child's weight-related behaviors. Electronic letter distribution and parent receip

Association of years to parent's sporadic onset and risk factors with neural integrity and Alzheimer biomarkers.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the hypothesis that proximity to parental age at onset (AAO) in sporadic Alzheimer disease (AD) is associated with greater AD and neural injury biomarker alterations during midlife and to assess the role of nonmodifiable and modifiable factors. METHODS: This observational study included 290 cognitively unimpaired (CU) participants with a family history (FH) of clinically diagnosed sporadic AD (age 49-73 years) from the Alzheimer's and Families (ALFA) study. [18F]flutemetamol-PET standardized uptake value ratios, CSF β-amyloid42/40 ratio, and phosphorylated tau were used

Parental Contributors to the Prevalence and Long-term Health Risks of Family Weight Teasing in Adolescence.

PURPOSE: Weight teasing from family members is common during adolescence. However, little is known about parental factors that increase adolescents' risk for family weight teasing and its adverse health sequelae. Using multi-informant data from adolescents, mothers and fathers, the current longitudinal study examined how parental concerns about their child's weight and their own weight contribute to family weight teasing in adolescence and its long-term health consequences. METHODS: Data were collected in the population-based Project EAT 2010-2018 (Eating and Activity over Time) study, follow

Gene-environment interaction: New insights into perceived parenting and social anxiety among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety symptoms (SAS) are among the most common mental health problems during adolescence, and it has been shown that parenting influences the adolescent's level of social anxiety. In addition, it is now widely assumed that most mental health problems, including social anxiety, originate from a complex interplay between genes and environment. However, to date, gene-environment (G × E) interactions studies in the field of social anxiety remain limited. In this study, we have examined how 274 genes involved in different neurotransmission pathways interact with five aspects of

Association between Dietary Habits and Parental Health with Obesity among Children with Precocious Puberty.

Precocious puberty, resulting in various physical, mental, and social changes, may have negative consequences for children and their families. In this study, we investigated whether there were differences between parental obesity, children's and parent's awareness of body shape, and dietary habits according to obesity levels in children with precocious puberty. A total of 193 children (93.3% girls) diagnosed with precocious puberty were classified into three groups according to their obesity levels. Negative body shape awareness and dissatisfaction were significantly higher in the obese group

Developmental outcomes of young deaf children and the self-perceived parental role of their hearing mothers.

BACKGROUND: There is little research into the relationship between a deaf child's developmental outcomes and their mother's self-perceived parental role. The aim of this study was to find out whether the different levels of global psychomotor development in young deaf children who had a cochlear implant (CI), or were candidates for a CI, were related to particular family factors: the self-perceived parental role and the family quality of life (FQoL) as gauged by their hearing mothers, as well as the child's sociodemographic and deafness-related factors and the sociodemographic characteristics

Disrupted functional connectivity of the locus coeruleus in healthy adults with parental history of Alzheimer's disease.

Prevention and early treatment strategies for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are hampered by the lack of research biomarkers. Neuropathological changes in the Locus Coeruleus (LC) are detected early in AD, and noradrenaline plays a neuroprotective role in LC projecting areas. We assessed functional connectivity (FC) of the brainstem in asymptomatic individuals at familial risk for AD hypothesizing that FC of the LC will be decreased in relation to not-at-risk individuals. Thirty-one offspring of patients with late-onset AD (O-LOAD) (22 females; mean age ± SD = 50.36 ± 8.32) and 28 healthy controls (

Parent and Provider Perspectives on Recently Incarcerated Youths' Access to Healthcare During Community Reentry.

Incarcerated youth have numerous healthcare needs, yet access to healthcare following community reentry is limited. Healthcare and juvenile justice providers, along with parents, strongly influence access to care for youth undergoing reentry. However, their perspectives are often missing from the literature. We examined parent and provider perspectives on youths' access to healthcare during community reentry. We conducted 72 longitudinal interviews with parents of youth undergoing reentry (n= 34 parents) and cross-sectional interviews with health and juvenile justice providers (n=20 providers)

The Role of Parent Engagement in Overcoming Barriers to Care for Youth Returning Home After Incarceration.

We sought to understand the role of parent engagement in overcoming barriers to care for youth re-entering the community following incarceration. For this mixed methods study, we conducted quantitative surveys on healthcare needs and access with youth (n = 50) at 1-month post-incarceration, and semi-structured interviews with a subset of these youth (n = 27) and their parents (n = 34) at 1, 3, and 6-months post-incarceration (total 94 interviews). Differences by race/ethnicity and gender were assessed using Chi square test of proportions. We performed thematic analysis of interview transcripts

Child and Parent Perspectives on the Acceptability of Virtual Reality to Mitigate Medical Trauma in an Infusion Center.

INTRODUCTION: Children may experience medical trauma when undergoing medical procedures even when procedures are minor. While virtual reality (VR) is effective for managing procedural pain and anxiety, few studies address how families feel about using VR. We explore pediatric patient and guardian views regarding the acceptability of using VR during procedures to mitigate medical trauma. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews with 18 patient-guardian dyads at a tertiary outpatient infusion center for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment. Parental transgenerational epigenetic inheritance related to dietary crude oil exposure in Danio rerio.

Transgenerational inheritance from both parental lines can occur by genetic and epigenetic inheritance. Maternal effects substantially influence offspring survival and fitness. However, investigation of the paternal contribution to offspring success has been somewhat neglected. In the present study, adult zebrafish were separated into female and male groups exposed for 21 days to either a control diet or to a diet containing water accommodated fractions of crude oil. Four F1 offspring groups were obtained: (1) control (non-exposed parents), (2) paternally exposed, (3) maternally exposed and (4

A mixed methods investigation of the association between child sexual abuse and subsequent maternal parenting.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with a number of pernicious outcomes, including adverse parenting outcomes among mothers who experienced CSA (MCSA). Despite the large literature on these outcomes, gaps and uncertainties in the literature exist. Specifically, while previous literature has shown that some MCSA have their parenting negatively affected by CSA, others do not, and potential mechanisms explaining these variations, such as mental health and characteristics of the CSA experience, have not been fully explored. OBJECTIVES: To investigate (1) how MCSA believe their CSA
