Effects of chronic malnourishment and aging on the ultrastructure of pyramidal cells of the dorsal hippocampus.

OBJECTIVES: Malnourishment (M) produces permanent alterations during the development of the CNS and might modify the aging process. In pyramidal neurons (PN) of the hippocampus, which are associated with learning and memory performance, few studies have focused on changes at the subcellular level under chronic malnutrition (ChM) in young (Y, 2 months old) and aged (A, 22 months old) rats. The present work evaluated the extent to which ChM disrupts organelles in PN of the dorsal hippocampus CA1 as compared to controls (C). METHODS: Ultrastructural analysis was performed at 8000×  and 20 000×

Immediate medical care after sexual assault.

Immediate needs after sexual assault include safety and privacy in the first instance, followed by treatment of injuries and prevention of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including human immunodeficiency virus. Management should include risk identification of self-harm and suicide, as well as safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. Pregnancy prevention can be achieved through oral or mechanical methods of emergency contraception. Availability of emergency contraception may vary between districts and countries, depending on local laws and cultural or religious belie

Adolescents' experiences with uxoricide.

The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of individuals who survived the loss of one or both parents through parental homicide or homicide/suicide as adolescents. Participants (N = 34) were aged between 12 and 19 years at the time of the death and were aged between 29 and 64 years at the time of the interview. Participants were interviewed twice and asked to tell the story of their lives. Data were analyzed in the hermeneutic phenomenological tradition using a stepwise process of developing categories and then a single complex theme. Common categories of participants' childhoo

Fathers' views and understanding of their roles in families with a child with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

This study explored how fathers of children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) perceived and understood the roles they had within their family over the course of their child's illness and treatment. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with five fathers. Transcripts were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The major themes that emerged were: adjusting to the diagnosis; the experience of maternal gate-keeping; striving for normalization; experiences of giving and receiving support. Overall, the fathers perceived themselves as having signi

Parental occupational exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields and childhood cancer: a German case-control study.

Extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) have been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The authors investigated, in a population-based case-control study in Germany, if children whose parents were exposed preconceptionally at work to ELF-MFs had an increased risk of developing cancer. Cases aged 0-14 years were ascertained from the German Childhood Cancer Registry. Controls were selected from local resident registration offices. The parental occupational history was recorded in questionnaires and telephone interviews, and p

Stability and change in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among adults with and without Down syndrome.

Changes in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among 150 adults with Down syndrome and 240 adults with mental retardation due to other causes were examined with seven assessments over a 9-year period. Adults were primarily younger than 40, the age at which declines begin to be evident in individuals with Down syndrome. Adults with Down syndrome were advantaged in their functional abilities and lack of behavior problems, comparable in health, and exhibited comparable rates of change on these measures as adults with mental retardation due to other causes. Epidemiology of cardiovascular malformations: prevalence and risk factors.

Epidemiological approaches to the study of cardiovascular malformations (CVMs) face challenges of disease definition, nomenclature, changing diagnostic methodologies, the rarity of the disease in the general population, and the incorporation of current knowledge on genetics and morphogenesis into designing studies to investigate risk factors and implement preventive strategies. Previous studies, especially the population-based Baltimore-Washington Infant Study, have documented variability in the prevalence of specific types of CVM by time, place, and personal characteristics and have highlight

Clinical implications of respect for autonomy in the psychiatric treatment of pregnant patients with depression.

Major depression, as well as depressive symptoms that do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for a diagnosis of depression, can chronically and variably affect a woman patient's decisions about the management of pregnancy, including the decision about whether to continue a pregnancy. Depression also has potential adverse consequences for the pregnant woman and her pregnancy. However, little attention has been given to the ethical challenges posed by the psychiatric management of depression during pregnancy. The psychiatrist should balance respect for the autonomy of the depressed woman with

[Prenatal diagnosis of fetal malformations from the obstetrician's viewpoint].

Over a period of 5 1/2 years 685 amniocenteses were carried out for genetic and obstetric indications at the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Graz. In 39 cases (5.7%) the procedure had to be repeated because of amniocentesis failures, cell culture problems or borderline values for alphafetoprotein (AFP). Chromosome diagnosis was achieved in altogether 99% of cases. There were 14 twin pregnancies. Chromosome aberrations or malformations were found in 25 patients (3.6%). Therapeutic abortion was induced in 21 of these women and in each case the diagnosis was confirmed after te

Low socio-economic status increases risk of pediatric burn injury and predicts worse post-burn outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric thermal injuries represent a major public health concern worldwide. Socio-economic disparities influence burn risk and recovery. This study identified socio-economic risk factors for pediatric burn injury and examined associations between socio-economic status (SES), poverty, and post-burn outcomes. METHODS: Between May 2023 and July 2024, 334 pediatric burn patients and 136 hospitalized non-burn controls were surveyed at a German level I pediatric burn center. SES was assessed using the KiGGS index. Logistic regression analyses identified risk factors; subgroup analyses

Non-pharmacological interventions for perinatal parental depression and anxiety: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression and anxiety exhibit significant partner interdependence and family-level ramifications, constituting a family issue concerning both parents. However, existing evidence syntheses have predominantly examined maternal or paternal mental health in isolation, neglecting the systemic integrity of the family unit. OBJECTIVE: To conduct the first Bayesian network meta-analysis to evaluate and rank non-pharmacological interventions delivered concurrently to both parents for perinatal depression and anxiety. METHODS: Seven databases were searched from inception to May

Imaging features of adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP) is a rare, progressive white matter disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the CSF1R gene. It typically presents in mid-adulthood with progressive cognitive, motor, and neuropsychiatric decline, but its phenotypic variability often leads to delayed diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 41-year-old woman with no prior neurological history or relevant psychiatric tendencies who developed progressive cognitive impairment, urinary incontinence, gait disturbance, and sleep disruption over 3-4 years

Genetic Basis of Social Structure in the Pastoral Nomads of Central Eurasia.

Although the social structure of Central Eurasian pastoral nomads has been described as fluid and ad hoc by historians and anthropologists, its potential genetic basis remains poorly understood. To evaluate whether kinship based social organization has biological foundations, we surveyed Kazak populations in Jetisuu, Kazakstan, for genomic diversity with special reference to their kinship structure. We generated genome-wide SNP data (∼750 K) using GenoChip microarrays for 80 individuals from four Kazak clans in Jetisuu and 10 Kazaks from other regions. Our results reveal substantial concordanc

Nuclear error phenotypes at the first mitosis predict cleavage-stage outcomes but not blastocyst competence.

BACKGROUND: Nuclear errors (NE) observed at the two-cell stage reflect early mitotic disturbances, but their clinical relevance for embryo implantation and live birth remains un-clear. We investigated whether nuclear status at the two-cell stage predicts pregnancy and live birth outcomes following cleavage-stage and blastocyst transfer. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 3,793 single embryo transfers with clinical outcomes performed at a university-affiliated reproductive medicine centre. Embryos were retrospectively assessed at the two-cell stage and classified as normal or ex

Placental biology links genetic, epigenetic, ancestral, and social determinants to maternal-fetal health inequities.

Black and African American women in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, including placenta-mediated complications such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and miscarriage. These inequities arise from the interaction of social and environmental conditions with biological pathways that become embedded over the life course, with the placenta serving as a central mediator. In this review, we examine how placental biology integrates genetic variation, epigenetic regulation, paternal contributions, immune processes, and lived social

Intra-familial dynamics of mental distress during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Lockdowns and social restrictions imposed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic intensified the proximity and reciprocal exposure among members of nuclear families. It is unclear how variation in mental distress during this period is attributed to potential influences of family members. This study used genetic data from adolescents (n = 4 388), mothers (n = 27 852) and fathers (n = 25 953), to disentangle the contributions of parent-driven, child-driven, and partner-driven components to mental distress during the first two months of the Covid-19 lockdown. Separate models also included adolescen

Healthcare team trust, care coordination, and care access among cancer survivors with multiple chronic conditions: a mixed method analysis.

PURPOSE: Cancer survivors with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) are a growing population with complex health needs, yet little is known about their care experiences and healthcare team trust. METHODS: This mixed methods study used a convenience sample of 441 adult cancer survivors recruited through online survey platforms. Participants completed surveys assessing care coordination, care access, healthcare team trust, and whether their care team included a social worker, navigator, or care coordinator during the 12 months after diagnosis. Twelve survivors also participated in semi-structured

Oxytocin moderates father-infant dynamics during triadic family interaction: A dynamic structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Touch is a primary way parents communicate and bond with infants. Oxytocin, a neuropeptide that promotes bonding and regulates social responsiveness, may shape how parents touch their infants. However, most research has focused on maternal touch in dyadic interactions, leaving fathers and triadic family processes understudied. This study examined second-by-second links between parental touch and infant affect during triadic play with mothers, fathers, and infants. METHODS: Sixty-nine families from a longitudinal transition-to-parenthood study were observed during a four-minute tri
