Clinical rating systems in elbow research-a systematic review exploring trends and distributions of use.

BACKGROUND: Clinical rating systems are used as outcome measures in clinical trials and attempt to gauge the patient's view of his or her own health. The choice of clinical rating system should be supported by its performance against established quality standards. METHODS: A search strategy was developed to identify all studies that reported the use of clinical rating systems in the elbow literature. The strategy was run from inception in Medline Embase and CINHAL. Data extraction identified the date of publication, country of data collection, pathology assessed, and the outcome measure used.

Discordance between patient- and physician-reported disease activity in adult idiopathic inflammatory myopathy.

OBJECTIVES: Patient-reported global disease activity (patient-global) is a myositis core set measure. Understanding the drivers of patient-global is important in patient assessment, and disagreements between physician and patient perception of disease activity may negatively impact shared decision making. We examined the determinants of patient-global and discordance between patient-global and physician-reported global disease activity (physician-global) in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). METHODS: Adults with IIM were enrolled in a prospective observational cross-sectional study. T

Long-Term Durability of Stand-Alone Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

BACKGROUND: The long-term durability of stand-alone lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether early patient-reported outcome measures after stand-alone LLIF are sustained on long-term follow-up. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-six patients who underwent stand-alone LLIF between 2009 and 2017 were included in this study. Patient-reported outcome measures included the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), EuroQOL-5D (EQ-5D), and visual analog score (VAS) scores. Durable outcomes were defined as scores showing a significant improvement between preoperativ

Editorial Commentary: Preoperative Exercise, Workers' Compensation, Diabetes, Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis, and Return to Sport Determine Patient Satisfaction After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been developed and used as the primary determinant of successful patient-centered results. The patient acceptable symptomatic state delineates an absolute value for PROMs indicating that patients are satisfied with their outcome. When this metric is used for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, patients reach a satisfactory outcome at between 6 and 8 months postoperatively, and more than 90% reach a satisfactory outcome at 12 months. Preoperative variables such as preoperative exercise, Workers' Compensation, and diabetes impact patient outc

What is new in Freezing of Gait?

Freezing of Gait (FOG) research is entering a rapidly evolving phase. Published in early 2026, the International Consortium for FOG (ICFOG) released updated clinical and technical definitions of FOG and introduced a consensus-based standardized testing protocol, the Giladi protocol (GP-FOG), which is currently still under evaluation in an ongoing study. Complementing these advances, two new outcome measures, the clinician-reported outcome (ClinRO) and the patient-reported outcome (PRO), are highlighted in this review. Recent technological developments in both detection and potential prevention

Diagnosing Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Three diagnostic criteria must be met for hidradenitis suppurativa: typical lesions, occurrence in one or more of the predilection areas, and that it is chronic and/or recurrent. Several outcome measures are used, including patient-reported pain and itch scales, Dermatology Life Quality Index, and Skindex. Hidradenitis suppurativa is associated with significant comorbidities that must be addressed in the evaluation of the patients.

Are Patient-Reported Outcome Scores a Reasonable Substitute for Clinical Follow-up After Surgically Managed Acromioclavicular Joint Injuries?

BACKGROUND: Various clinical outcome scores have been described to evaluate postoperative shoulder function after operatively treated acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) instability. Clinical outcome scores can be divided between patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and examiner-dependent outcome measures (EDOMs) after a clinical examination by a physician. The correlation between PROMs and EDOMs, and thus their interchangeability with regard to operatively treated ACJ instability, has not yet been evaluated. PURPOSE: To investigate whether PROMs are a reasonable substitute for EDOMs. Correlat

Systematic Review of Patient- and Observer-Reported Outcomes of Fatigue in Pediatric Neuromuscular Disorders.

Fatigue is a burdensome symptom for pediatric populations with neuromuscular disorders, often assessed using patient- and observer-reported outcomes. The three aims of this systematic review are to: (1) explore, summarize and critically appraise primary studies that measure fatigue in pediatric neuromuscular disorders using patient- and observer-reported outcomes; (2) compare definitions of fatigue and related terms presented within these studies; and (3) summarize evidence for validation of patient- and observer-reported outcomes used in included studies. Six electronic databases were searche

Vertebral endplate bone marrow lesion composition: relation to Modic change classification and associations with chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Vertebral endplate bone marrow lesions ("Modic changes," MC) are a putative cause of chronic low back pain in some individuals. However, associations between MC subtypes and clinical symptoms are variable, which limits the utility of conventional imaging in diagnosing and treating chronic low back pain patients with MC. PURPOSE: Develop a quantitative imaging biomarker for measuring compositional abnormalities in MC-affected endplates using water-fat MRI and test for associations with patient-reported outcomes, conventional MC type classification, and longitudinal conversi

Impact of Preoperative Uterine Volume on Symptom Recurrence Following Vaginal Hysterectomy for Pelvic Organ Prolapse.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal hysterectomy (VH) is the preferred minimally invasive technique for benign uterine conditions, such as uterine prolapse, due to its association with faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and fewer complications compared to abdominal or laparoscopic approaches. Uterine volume is often considered a factor influencing surgical feasibility and potential complications. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included all women who underwent VH at our institute between January 2010 and December 2016, and validated patient-reported outcome measures to identify the rela

A Systematic Review on Evaluating Responsiveness of Parent- or Caregiver-Reported Child Maltreatment Measures for Interventions.

Aims: Child maltreatment (CM) is a global public health and social problem, resulting in serious long-term health and socioeconomic consequences. As parents are the most common perpetrators of CM, parenting interventions are appropriate strategies to prevent CM. However, research on parenting interventions on CM has been hampered by lack of consensus on what measures are most responsive to detect a reduction in parental maltreating behaviours after parenting intervention. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the responsiveness of all current parent- or caregiver-reported CM measures. Metho

Case report: Expanding the understanding of the adult polyglucosan body disease continuum: novel presentations, diagnostic pitfalls, and clinical pearls.

Introduction: Adult polyglucosan body disease (APBD) has long been regarded as the adult-onset form of glycogen storage disease type IV (GSD IV) and is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in GBE1. Advances in the understanding of the natural history of APBD published in recent years have led to the use of discrete descriptors ("typical" versus "atypical") based on adherence to traditional symptomatology and homozygosity for the p.Y329S variant. Although these general descriptors are helpful in summarizing common findings and symptoms in APBD, they are inherently limited and may affect dise
