[Evaluation of visual perception in multifocal IOL implantation with different presbyopic shift using results of visual acuity defocusing].

Defocusing of visual acuity was performed in 102 patients after cataract surgery with binocular implantation of multifocal IOL of refractive type "Rayner" with different presbyopic shift and their combinations: 3/3, 4/4 and 3/4 D. The best stability of different distance visual acuity was observed in anisomultifocal implantation, that optimizes pseudoaccommodative visual perception.

Effects of age and hearing loss on the relationship between discrimination of stochastic frequency modulation and speech perception.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency modulation (FM) of speech can convey linguistic information and also enhance speech-stream coherence and segmentation. The purpose of the present study was to use a clinically oriented approach to examine the effects of age and hearing loss on the ability to discriminate between stochastic patterns of low-rate FM and determine whether difficulties in speech perception experienced by older listeners relate to a deficit in this ability. DESIGN: Data were collected from 18 normal-hearing young adults, and 18 participants who were at least 60 years old, nine of whom had n

Low-level deficits in beat perception: neither necessary nor sufficient for explaining developmental dyslexia in a consistent orthography.

This article reports two different studies examining the theoretical account of low-level deficits in beat perception as an alternative explanation of developmental dyslexia in Greek, an orthographically consistent language. Study I examined the relationship of amplitude rise time and frequency discrimination with measures of phonological processing, working memory, and reading fluency in a large unselected sample of Grade 4 children. Study II examined the presence of beat perception deficits in groups of Grade 2, 4, and 6 children with dyslexia and their chronological age controls. The result

Importance of stress receptor-mediated mechanisms in the amygdala on visceral pain perception in an intrinsically anxious rat.

BACKGROUND: Stress worsens abdominal pain experienced by patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic disorder of unknown origin with comorbid anxiety. Previously, we have demonstrated colonic hypersensitivity in Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKYs), a high-anxiety strain, which models abdominal pain in IBS. In low-anxiety rats, we have demonstrated that the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) regulates colonic hypersensitivity and anxiety induced by selective activation of either glucocorticoid receptors (GR) or mineralocorticoid receptors (MR), which is also mediated by the corticotropin re

Development of a novel FMRI compatible visual perception prototype battery to test older people with and without dementia.

BACKGROUND: Visuoperceptual deficits in dementia are common and can reduce quality of life. Testing of visuoperceptual function is often confounded by impairments in other cognitive domains and motor dysfunction. We aimed to develop, pilot, and test a novel visuocognitive prototype test battery which addressed these issues, suitable for both clinical and functional imaging use. METHODS: We recruited 23 participants (14 with dementia, 6 of whom had extrapyramidal motor features, and 9 age-matched controls). The novel Newcastle visual perception prototype battery (NEVIP-B-Prototype) included an

Model cortical association fields account for the time course and dependence on target complexity of human contour perception.

Can lateral connectivity in the primary visual cortex account for the time dependence and intrinsic task difficulty of human contour detection? To answer this question, we created a synthetic image set that prevents sole reliance on either low-level visual features or high-level context for the detection of target objects. Rendered images consist of smoothly varying, globally aligned contour fragments (amoebas) distributed among groups of randomly rotated fragments (clutter). The time course and accuracy of amoeba detection by humans was measured using a two-alternative forced choice protocol

Holistic perception of individual faces in the right middle fusiform gyrus as evidenced by the composite face illusion.

The perception of a facial feature (e.g., the eyes) is influenced by the position and identity of other features (e.g., the mouth) supporting an integrated, or holistic, representation of individual faces in the human brain. Here we used an event-related adaptation paradigm in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to clarify the regions representing faces holistically across the whole brain. In each trial, observers performed the same/different task on top halves (aligned or misaligned) of two faces presented sequentially. For each face pair, the identity of top and bottom parts could b

Enhanced visual acuity and image perception following correction of highly aberrated eyes using an adaptive optics visual simulator.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in visual acuity and visual perception generated by correcting higher order aberrations in highly aberrated eyes using a large-stroke adaptive optics visual simulator. METHODS: A crx1 Adaptive Optics Visual Simulator (Imagine Eyes) was used to correct and modify the wavefront aberrations in 12 keratoconic eyes and 8 symptomatic postoperative refractive surgery (LASIK) eyes. After measuring ocular aberrations, the device was programmed to compensate for the eye's wavefront error from the second order to the fifth order (6-mm pupil). Visual acuity was assessed t

A social relations analysis of liking for and by peers: associations with gender, depression, peer perception, and worry.

We used social relations modeling (SRM; mixed modeling and SOREMO) to examine liking among peers (affective preferences) in relation to gender and socioemotional problems. Participants (N=278, age 10 to 13) rated how much they liked each other and reported depressive symptoms, negative beliefs, and social worries. Boys and girls were equally liked, but liked same-gender more than cross-gender peers. Genders showed similar consensus about liking for same-gender peers; rater differences were important for cross-gender liking. Depressed preadolescents were liked less but did not like classmates l

Visual outcomes of vitreoretinal surgery in eyes with severe open-globe injury presenting with no-light-perception vision.

BACKGROUND: Severe ocular trauma causing no light perception (NLP) typically carries a dismal prognosis, and implies no further therapeutic intervention. We have identified a cohort of patients with verified NLP following open-globe injury who have recovered vision of light perception (LP) or better. We evaluated the outcomes of vitreoretinal surgery performed on eyes that were NLP post open-globe injury. METHODS: Retrospective review of outcomes of secondary vitreoretinal surgery performed at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary from 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2006 on all cases of open-glo

Residual perception of moving objects: dissociation of moving and static objects in a case of posterior cortical atrophy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Several studies have reported specific cognitive deficits of posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) starting in the early stage; however, these characteristics have not been demonstrated as arising in the middle or late stage of the disease. We report a patient with PCA who exhibited atypical symptoms after the middle stage. METHODS: We observed and examined the patient for more than 10 years in clinical and everyday situations. RESULTS: With increasing symptoms, the patient gradually showed blind-like behavior. He could not find a static object even when it was in front of him, b

An fMRI-study of locally oriented perception in autism: altered early visual processing of the block design test.

Autism has been associated with enhanced local processing on visual tasks. Originally, this was based on findings that individuals with autism exhibited peak performance on the block design test (BDT) from the Wechsler Intelligence Scales. In autism, the neurofunctional correlates of local bias on this test have not yet been established, although there is evidence of alterations in the early visual cortex. Functional MRI was used to analyze hemodynamic responses in the striate and extrastriate visual cortex during BDT performance and a color counting control task in subjects with autism compar

Your pain or mine? Common and distinct neural systems supporting the perception of pain in self and other.

Humans possess a remarkable capacity to understand the suffering of others. Cognitive neuroscience theories of empathy suggest that this capacity is supported by 'shared representations' of self and other. Consistent with this notion, a number of studies have found that perceiving others in pain and experiencing pain oneself recruit overlapping neural systems. Perception of pain in each of these conditions, however, may also cause unique patterns of activation, that may reveal more about the processing steps involved in each type of pain. To address this issue, we examined neural activity whil

Impedance-matching hearing in Paleozoic reptiles: evidence of advanced sensory perception at an early stage of amniote evolution.

BACKGROUND: Insights into the onset of evolutionary novelties are key to the understanding of amniote origins and diversification. The possession of an impedance-matching tympanic middle ear is characteristic of all terrestrial vertebrates with a sophisticated hearing sense and an adaptively important feature of many modern terrestrial vertebrates. Whereas tympanic ears seem to have evolved multiple times within tetrapods, especially among crown-group members such as frogs, mammals, squamates, turtles, crocodiles, and birds, the presence of true tympanic ears has never been recorded in a Paleo

Deficits of visual motion perception and optokinetic nystagmus after posterior suprasylvian lesions in the ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

We recently described an area in the ferret posterior suprasylvian (PSS) cortex characterized by a high proportion of direction selective neurons. To answer the question whether area PSS subserves functions similar to cat posteromediolateral suprasylvian area (PMLS) and monkey medial temporal area (MT) we investigated the contribution of area PSS to visual motion perception and optokinetic nystagmus. Ferrets were tested on global motion detection before and after bilateral lesions involving area PSS and control lesions of other extrastriate visual areas. Following PSS lesions motion coherence

Effects of cigarette smoking and family history of alcoholism on sweet taste perception and food cravings in women.

BACKGROUND: Despite popular beliefs that smoking affects the sensitivity and liking of sweet-tasting foods and beverages, few psychophysical studies have examined this phenomenon and none have taken into account the individual's family history of alcoholism (FH+), a predictor of heightened sweet preferences. METHODS: A within- and between-subjects study was conducted to determine the effect of both cigarette smoking and an acute exposure to nicotine on sweet taste sensitivity and preferences in women. Two groups were studied on 2 days separated by 1 week: women who were current smokers (n = 2

The gustatory pathway is involved in CD36-mediated orosensory perception of long-chain fatty acids in the mouse.

The sense of taste informs the body about the quality of ingested foods. Tastant-mediated signals are generated by a rise in free intracellular calcium levels ([Ca(2+)]i) in the taste bud cells and then are transferred to the gustatory area of brain via connections between the gustatory nerves (chorda tympani and glossopharyngeal nerves) and the nucleus of solitary tract in the brain stem. We have recently shown that lingual CD36 contributes to fat preference and early digestive secretions in the mouse. We show here that 1) the induction of an increase in [Ca(2+)]i by linoleic acid is CD36-dep

Negative bias in the perception of others' facial emotional expressions in major depression: the role of depressive rumination.

Depressed individuals display a negative bias in the perception of others' facial emotional expressions. The extent of this selective processing, moreover, has proven predictive of a poor outcome in depression. However, to date, little is known about the possible mechanisms that may account for this bias. This study examined the hypothesis that rumination--an analytical type of self-focused attention--would be associated with higher levels of perception of negative facial emotions in major depression. Twenty-six depressed patients (17 women) completed the Perception of Facial Expressions Quest
