Preterm birth or foetal growth impairment and psychiatric hospitalization in adolescence and early adulthood in a Swedish population-based birth cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth and restricted foetal growth are related to symptoms of psychiatric disorder. Our aim was therefore to investigate possible relations between being born preterm and/or small for gestational age (SGA) and later psychiatric hospitalization. METHOD: A population-based registry study of psychiatric hospitalization of in total 155,994 boys and 148,281 girls born in Sweden in 1973-1975. RESULTS: The risk of hospitalization for all mental disorders was increased for preterm SGA boys (OR 2.19, 95% CI 1.49-3.21); at-term SGA boys (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.34-1.79); at-term SGA girls

Dissociative disorders in the psychiatric emergency ward.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dissociative disorders among emergency psychiatric admissions. METHOD: Forty-three of the 97 consecutive outpatients admitted to the psychiatric emergency unit of a university hospital were screened using the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES). Seventeen (39.5% of the 43 evaluated) patients with a DES score above 25.0 were then interviewed with the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule and the Structured Clinical Interview for Dissociative Disorders. RESULTS: Fifteen emergency unit patients (34.9% of the 43 evaluated p

Patterns of comorbidity in panic disorder and major depression: findings from a nonreferred sample.

Previous findings in referred adult samples document major depression as having important moderating effects on the patterns of comorbidity for panic disorder and major depression. This study evaluated whether these patterns of comorbidity are moderated by referral bias. Panic disorder (PD) and major depression (MD) were used to predict the risk for comorbid psychiatric disorders and functional outcomes using data from a large sample of adults who had not been ascertained on the basis of clinical referral (N=1,031). Participants were comprehensively assessed with structured diagnostic intervie

[Distribution of alexithymia as a personality-trait in psychosomatically ill in-patients--measured with TAS 20 and LEAS].

Preliminary findings of an ongoing study of the distribution of alexithymia in different diagnostic-groups of psychosomatically ill in-patients (n = 240, will be increased to n = 400) are reported. Alexithymiea is measured simultaneousely by the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS, a performance-test) and the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS 20, a self-report-scale). Measured by the LEAS and compared with other diagnostic groups (affective, anxiety and compulsive-obsessive disorders; adjustment disorders; eating disorders), patients with somatoform disorders showed a decreased abil

Bipolar disorder in adult patients with Tourette's syndrome: a clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Although recent clinical and epidemiological studies indicate that Tourette's syndrome (TS) is associated with a higher than expected rate of bipolar disorder (BPD), the clinical characteristics of BPD in patients with TS have not been widely investigated. METHODS: Thirty adult TS patients with comorbid BPD were selected from a consecutive series of 90 referred TS patients and examined using structured psychiatric rating scales. RESULTS: The full clinical spectrum of BPD was found, including bipolar I disorder, schizoaffective bipolar disorder, bipolar II disorder, and cyclothymi

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. When the pursuit of bodily 'perfection' becomes a killer.

Eating disorders probably result from a combination of emotional, physical, and sociologic factors and are encouraged by a society that values appearance as a measure of worth. Once believed to be a problem largely among young women, the disorders are being found increasingly among children, young athletes, men, and elderly women. Often accompanied by depression, anxiety, and personality disorders, eating disorders may be difficult to diagnose. Patients with anorexia nervosa often deny that they have a problem, despite obvious physical signs. Patients with bulimia nervosa may hide their bingin

Uncomplicated and comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder in an epidemiologic sample.

This study investigated lifetime prevalence rates, demographic characteristics, childhood conduct disorder and adult antisocial features, suicide attempts, and cognitive impairment in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) uncomplicated by or comorbid with any other psychiatric disorder. The data are from the NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) study, and the current analyses compared subjects with uncomplicated OCD (no history of any other lifetime psychiatric disorder), comorbid OCD (with any other lifetime disorder), other lifetime psychiatric disorders, and no lifetime ps

Lessons from a mood disorders unit.

Specialist treatment centres, such as the Mood Disorders Unit (MDU) at Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney, have developed in response to the high prevalence of mood disorders and their frequent persistence and treatment resistance. The MDU's assessment and treatment of patients from a state-wide catchment area and its teaching and research effectiveness are reviewed. Of 479 patients assessed between 1985 and 1989, there were 304 with primary depressive disorders, of whom 154 were followed up by clinical assessment at 52 weeks and 231 by telephone interview at 3 1/2 years. At intake, 59% were tertia

[Hysteria: problems of definition and evolution of the symptomatology].

What is the evolution of hysteria, now that the spectacular crises of previous times tend to occur less frequently? Are hysterical manifestations disappearing or do they take other forms? This question raises semantic and phenomenological problems concerning hysteria. A review of the literature shows the complexity and precariousness of some definitions, the question raised by associated organic disorders and the compounding influences of other nosological entities, such as depression and psychosomatic disorders. Clinical histories from the records of a psychiatric hospital for the period 1910

Experimental Research on Schema Modes: Guidelines and Research Agenda.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Schema therapy is an evidence-based treatment for personality disorders (PDs), with 'schema modes' being a core theoretical and clinical concept. Despite their centrality, empirical research into the mechanisms of schema mode activation remains limited. This paper reviews the available research on schema mode activation and provides methodological guidelines and a research agenda to stimulate experimental research on schema modes. RECENT FINDINGS: We identified five published studies that experimentally induced schema modes using a variety of procedures (e.g., stress interv

The Societal Response to Psychopathy in the Community.

The harm usually associated with psychopathy requires therapeutically, legally, and ethically satisfactory solutions. Scholars from different fields have, thus, examined whether empirical evidence shows that individuals with psychopathic traits satisfy concepts, such as responsibility, mental disorder, or disability, that have specific legal or ethical implications. The present paper considers the less discussed issue of whether psychopathy is a disability. As it has been shown for the cases of the responsibility and mental disorder status of psychopathic individuals, we argue that it is undec

[Systematic review of evidence on the association between personality and tinnitus].

INTRODUCTION: The scientific literature demonstrates that personality traits are associated with the individual's adaptation to chronic diseases, and can be an important factor in the etiology and prognosis of physical illness. Some studies indicate that personality characteristics may influence the perception of tinnitus. OBJECTIVE: To assess the scientific evidence of the association between tinnitus and personality. METHODS: A systematic review of the following databases: PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Web of Knowledge. Only studies of patients older than 18 years published in English, Portu

A close look at sociality in DSM criteria.

PURPOSE: The importance of sociality in psychology and psychotherapy is quite undisputed; however, this construct risks being underestimated in psychiatric nosography. The aim of the review was to assess the relevance of sociality in DSM 5 criteria. METHOD: Sociality-laden criteria of 192 selected DSM categories have been identified through a textual grid. Second, the criteria have been classified into 6 categories, i.e., (1) Affiliation and Attachment (AA), (2) Social Communication (SC), (3) Perception and Understanding of Others (PUO), (4) Culture, (5) Clinical Significance Criterion (CSC)

Mental Health in Childhood and Adolescence: The Role of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids.

There is increasing awareness of the importance of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for optimal brain development and function. In recent decades, researchers have confirmed the central role of PUFAs in a variety of patho-physiological processes. These agents modulate the mechanisms of brain cell signalling including the dopaminergic and serotonergic pathways. Therefore, nutritional insufficiencies of PUFAs may have adverse effects on brain development and developmental outcomes. The role of n-3 PUFAs has been studied in several psychiatric disorders in adulthood: schizophrenia, major depre

Suicide attempts and suicidal ideation: links with psychiatric comorbidity in eating disorder subjects.

Additional psychiatric disorders in eating disorders patients may contribute to the risk of suicide and suicide attempts. The aim of this study was to examine associations between Axes I and II comorbidity and suicidality in a large sample of women currently suffering from an eating disorder (ED). In a sample of 288 women (87 anorexia nervosa, 158 bulimia nervosa, 43 eating disorders not otherwise specified) psychiatric comorbidity of Axes I and II was determined using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. Histories of attempted suicide were explored in a structured interview. Suicidal

The identification of OCD-related subgroups based on comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently have other psychiatric disorders. This study employed latent class analysis (LCA) to explore whether there are underlying clinical constructs that distinguish "OCD-related" subgroups. METHODS: The study included 450 subjects, case and control probands and their first-degree relatives, and LCA was used to derive empirically based subgroups of 10 disorders: OCD, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), recurrent major depressive disorder (RMDD), separation anxiety disorder, panic disorder or agoraphobia (PD/AG)

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders among incarcerated women. II. Convicted felons entering prison.

BACKGROUND: No unbiased estimates of the rates of psychiatric disorder among women prison inmates are available. Nonetheless, available data suggest that some psychiatric disorders are prevalent in this population. The objective of the study was to determine the rates, risk factors, and outcomes of specific psychiatric disorders among women prison inmates. METHODS: A virtual census of women felons (N = 805) entering prison in North Carolina was assessed using in-person interviews. Assessments were conducted for 8 disorders, using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview as the primary
