Cross-species transcriptomic plasticity and root architectural adaptations in Brachypodium (Brachypodium distachyon) and barley (Hordeum vulgare) genotypes under different ammonium and nitrate availability.

Nitrogen (N) form and availability shape the root phenotype by altering the root transcriptome and modulating root system architecture. However, it remains unclear whether these N-responsive architectural traits and their underlying regulatory networks are conserved or divergent between closely related grass species. Here, we compared root architectural and transcriptomic responses to nitrate and ammonium supply in Brachypodium distachyon and eight barley (Hordeum vulgare) genotypes under N starvation, optimal N supply, and high-N conditions. High-resolution root phenotyping revealed contrasti

Flexible Edible Materials from Extrusion-Plasticized Modified Cassava Starches with Maltol and Ethyl Maltol: Molecular Interactions, Mechanical Properties, and Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities.

This study systematically investigated how cassava starch modification chemistry and hydroxypropyl substitution level influence the structure and functional performance of extrusion-plasticized edible materials containing maltol or ethyl maltol. Native starch, acetylated starch, octenyl succinate-modified starch, and hydroxypropylated starches with low, medium, and high substitution levels were incorporated with 3% maltol or ethyl maltol and processed by twin-screw extrusion. The resulting materials were characterized for microstructure, molecular environment, crystalline organization, thermal

Enhanced Neurophysiological Benefits of Magnesium-Acetyl-Taurate Over Magnesium-L-Threonate: A Comparative pre-clinical Study on Bioavailability, Synaptic Plasticity and Cognitive Functions.

The study examines how magnesium compounds, especially Magnesium-L-Threonate (MLT) and Magnesium-Acetyl-Taurate (MAT), affect neurophysiological functions in adult Wistar rats. Magnesium is essential for many cellular processes in the brain & peripheral system, such as neurotransmitter regulation, muscle function, and energy metabolism. Tissue Mg²⁺ levels were defined as the primary endpoint of the study, as they directly reflect the central objective of evaluating magnesium-based interventions. All other outcomes, including behavioral, biochemical, and molecular parameters, were considered se

Environmental enrichment modulates parvalbumin interneuron deficits and plasticity-related signaling after early postnatal NMDA receptor hypofunction in male rat visual cortex.

Sensory processing deficits in schizophrenia have been linked to dysfunction of cortical inhibitory interneurons, particularly parvalbumin-expressing (PV+) populations. NMDA receptor hypofunction during development is known to disrupt interneuron maturation, but its long-term impact on visual cortex circuitry and the potential for experience-dependent modulation in adulthood remain unclear. Here, we examined the effects of early postnatal N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor blockade with MK-801 on the number of PV+ and somatostatin-expressing (SST+) interneurons in the primary visual cortex (

Platelet Storage Quality, Plasticizer Migration, and Transfusion Exposure Risk in DEHP Versus Non-DEHP Blood Storage Systems: A Mechanistic and Quantitative Comparative Analysis.

The global transition away from di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)-plasticized blood storage systems has raised important questions regarding platelet storage biology, transfusion performance, and recipient exposure to plasticizer-derived compounds. This systematic review evaluated platelet quality, plasticizer migration, and modeled transfusion exposure associated with DEHP-containing and DEHP-free platelet storage systems, including di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT), diisononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH), butyryl trihexyl citrate (BTHC), and tri(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate (TOTM

Iatrogenic plasticizer Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure increases Sepsis mortality risk: Machine learning implicates monocyte-driven immune dysregulation.

Sepsis poses a significant global health burden, and ICU patients are disproportionately exposed to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), an immunotoxic plasticizer that leaches from PVC medical devices; however, whether this exposure causally influences sepsis outcomes remains unclear. To investigate this relationship, we conducted a prospective cohort study comparing 90 ICU sepsis patients with 50 controls, quantifying urinary DEHP metabolites using LC-MS/MS. Sepsis patients demonstrated significantly elevated DEHP metabolite levels (p < 0.001), and high exposure (≥341.58 μg/g creatinine) was i

Minocycline-induced microglial remodeling restores hippocampal NMDA-dependent synaptic plasticity and reduces anxiety-like behavior in juvenile rats with temporal lobe epileptogenesis.

Microglial activation and neuroinflammation are recognized as key drivers of synaptic dysfunction in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), yet the causal mechanisms linking specific microglial phenotypes to neuronal hyperexcitability remain poorly understood, and clinically viable therapeutic strategies to modulate these processes are urgently needed. Using the lithium-pilocarpine model in young male rats (P21-P28), we demonstrate that a 7-day minocycline treatment (100 → 50 mg/kg, i.p.), initiated immediately following status epilepticus, induces robust and selective microglial morphological remodeli

Genetic Activation of Locus Coeruleus Noradrenergic Neurons Modulates Cerebellar MF-GrC Synaptic Plasticity via Presynaptic α2-AR/PKA Signaling in Mice.

Locus coeruleus (LC) noradrenergic neurons project their axons to the cerebellar cortex and modulate cerebellar circuit function via distinct adrenergic receptor (AR) subtypes. The present study investigated the mechanism by which optogenetic activation of LC noradrenergic neurons modulates facial stimulation-evoked long-term synaptic plasticity at cerebellar mossy fiber-granule cell (MF-GrC) synapses in urethane-anesthetized DBH-Cre mice. Blockade of GABAA receptors, 20 Hz facial stimulation induced MF-GrC long-term potentiation (LTP) in the control group, and this LTP was impaired by optogen

Turns and Turn-Related Falls: Stepping on a Rotating Platform as a Potential Approach to Foster Adapted Muscular and Neural Plasticity in Fragile Persons and Patients with Motor Impairment.

Falls remain the leading cause of injury-related death among older adults, with turning accident often producing the most severe consequences, such as hip fractures and a resulting decline in independence. Despite curved-path walking accounting for the majority of daily locomotion, most interventions insufficiently target the coordinated action of lower limb, pelvic and trunk muscles underlying safe turning. This leaves a large proportion of older adults and patients with motricity problems and movement disorders at heightened risk of life-altering injuries. Addressing this gap requires innova

TDP-43 pathology is sufficient to drive axon initial segment plasticity and hyperexcitability of spinal motoneurones in vivo in the TDP43-ΔNLS model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

A hyperexcitability of the motor system is consistently observed in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and has been implicated in the disease pathogenesis. What drives this hyperexcitability in the vast majority of patients is unknown. This is important to know as existing treatments simply reduce all neuronal excitability and fail to distinguish between pathological changes and important homeostatic changes. Understanding what drives the initial pathological changes could therefore provide better treatments. One challenge is that patients represent a heterogeneous population and the vast maj

Using Levothyroxin-Loaded Zn-Curcumin MOF to Achieve Collaborative Treatment of Hypothyroidic Encephalopathy through Reducing Oxidative Stress and Re-Building Synaptic Plasticity.

Hypothyroid encephalopathy refers to cognitive impairment caused by hypothyroidism, which is caused by low thyroid hormone signal in the brain, and further leads to an increase in oxidative stress level, a decrease in hippocampal synaptic plasticity, and even affects the signal transmission process between neurons. However, traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) only restores the thyroid hormone concentration in serum, not in the brain, which leads to damage to hippocampal synaptic plasticity in the brain that can't be repaired. In addition, there is also oxidative damage, which makes t

Prostate cancer-specific proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines impact on cancer stem cell development, lineage plasticity and heterogeneity in an Ancestral/racially diverse population: review.

Since 1976, Surveillance Epidemiology End Results (SEER) began collecting ethnicity data for the National Cancer Institute. The incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) among African American men (AAM) has been 60-70% higher than any other ethnicity and mortality rate 2 to 3 times greater than European American men (EAM), and those data have not changed. We reported in 2010 that PCa grows faster among AAM compared to EAM. In 2013, we utilized bioinformatics and ingenuity gene network analysis and in silico analysis to identify driver genes responsible for "racial" disparity. Genes associated with li

Enhanced crystallization and plasticization of bio-friendly poly(lactic acid) films via synergistic effect of self-assembly nucleating agent and poly(ethylene glycol).

To address the threat posed by petroleum-based plastics to the global environment, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), known for its excellent mechanical strength and biocompatibility, is a promising alternative. Herein, we present a versatile strategy for preparing PLA-based materials with enhanced crystallization and toughness through one-step melt blending, aiming to solve the inherent brittleness and fragility issues of PLA films. The study delves into the synergistic effects of nucleating agent decanedioic acid, 1,10-bis(2-benzoylhydrazide) (NA300L), plasticizer polyethylene glycol (PEG), and chain

Targeting Epigenetic Plasticity to Reduce Periodontitis-Related Inflammation in Diabetes: CBD, Metformin, and Other Natural Products as Potential Synergistic Candidates for Regulation? A Narrative Review.

Periodontitis is unanimously accepted to be the sixth complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), while the inverse relationship of causality is still to be deciphered. Among the proposed mechanisms is gut dysbiosis, which is responsible for the systemic release of proinflammatory mediators. In this process, Gram-negative bacteria from the oral cavity enter the general circulation, leading to the emergence of bi-hormonal beta-pancreatic cells that lack the ability to secrete insulin. Additionally, epigenetic and adaptive mechanisms in affected cells may play a role in reducing inflammation. The re

Well-developed cutaneous feeder compression using a circular plastic disc and a rubber band for embolization of non-sinus type parasagittal dural arteriovenous fistula.

BACKGROUND: Non-sinus type parasagittal dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is associated with a high incidence of cortical venous reflux and is susceptible to the development of progressive symptoms, including venous infarction and cerebral hemorrhage. Well-developed superficial temporal arteries (STAs) and/or occipital arteries (OAs) are frequently involved, which present a challenge in controlling liquid embolic material when injecting liquid embolic material from the middle meningeal artery (MMA). We developed a method to control the feeding from cutaneous vessels using a circular plastic d

A novel puzzle ring replacement technique of a lumen-apposing metal stent with a double-pigtail plastic stent to prevent walled-off necrosis recurrence (with video).

Replacing a lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) with a double-pigtail plastic stent (DPS) after treatment for walled-off necrosis contributes to the prevention of recurrence. However, the success rate is not very high. To overcome this issue, we devised a novel stent-replacement technique. In the final treatment procedure, a 7-F DPS was placed in the lumen of the LAMS. Subsequently, the walled-off necrosis shrank, and granulation formed over the pigtail portion, which fixed the DPS. The LAMS alone was removed with grasping forceps, leaving the DPS in the lumen of the LAMS (i.e., a puzzle-ring te
