Acceptability and feasibility of leveraging community-based HIV counselling and testing platforms for same-day oral PrEP initiation among adolescent girls and young women in Eastern Cape, South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Community-based delivery of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to South African adolescent girls and young women's (AGYW) could increase access but needs evaluation. We integrated PrEP services via home-based services and pop-up tents into existing community-based HIV testing services (CB-HTS) in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. METHODS: After accessing CB-HTS via a "pop-up" tent or home-based services, HIV-negative AGYW aged 16-25 years were invited to complete a baseline questionnaire and referred for PrEP services at a community-based PrEP site co-located with pop-up HTS

Barriers and delays to healthcare at time of death: qualitative analysis of Los Angeles County death records of people experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Human health and homelessness are incompatible with one another. People experiencing homelessness (PEH) experience extreme health and social inequities, including a significantly higher mortality rate and lower life expectancy compared to the general adult population. While many studies have attempted to identify the most common causes of death, no study to our knowledge has sought to contextualize these deaths using death records. The objective of this study was to conduct a qualitative analysis of the Los Angeles County medical examiner records of people experiencing homelessness

An evaluation of StaySafe, a tablet app to improve health risk decision-making among people under community supervision.

BACKGROUND: A self-administered tablet app, StaySafe, helps people under community supervision to make better decisions regarding health risk behaviors, especially those linked to HIV, viral hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted infections. The multi-session StaySafe design uses an interactive, analytical schema called WORKIT that guides users through a series of steps, questions, and exercises aimed at promoting critical thinking about health risks associated with substance use and unprotected sex. Repetition of the WORKIT schema is designed to enhance procedural memory that can be rapidl

The Fort McMurray Demonstration Project in Social Marketing: no demonstrable effect on already falling injury rates following intensive community and workplace intervention.

The Fort McMurray Demonstration Project in Social Marketing attempted to achieve mutually reinforcing effects from thematically coordinated educational and awareness efforts in the community as a whole and in the workplace and the inclusion of occupational safety within the framework of a community health promotion project. The study community was Fort McMurray, a small, industrial city in northern Alberta. The Mistahiai Health Region, several hundred kilometers to the west and also dominated by one city, Grande Prairie, served as the reference community. The intervention was based on media an

Triple Harm of Malnutrition and Mental Health in Low- and- Middle Income Countries: After COVID-19.

Low- and- middle income countries (LMICs), particularly in Latin America, face a growing double burden of malnutrition, characterized by the coexistence of obesity and micronutrient deficiencies alongside high rates of mental health disorders. From the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) perspective, maternal nutrition and mental health are critical determinants of offspring growth, neurodevelopment, and long-term health. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global food crisis have exacerbated food insecurity, unhealthy diets, and symptoms of depression and anxiety, increasing

Family income as a moderator of relations between sleep and physical health during adolescence.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep duration, quality, and consistency are associated with overall physical health in adolescence, yet the effects of sleep on development may be not uniform because both sleep and physical health vary systematically along gradients of family income. To understand "for whom" sleep may be particularly beneficial, the present study tested family income as a moderator of relations between youth sleep and physical health. METHODS: Three hundred twenty-three youth (M age=17.39years; 53% female; 41% Black, 59% White) wore wrist actigraphs for 1week at home. Four well-recognized sleep

"It's Finding the Time to Prioritize Ourselves": Using the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explore Young Black Women's Attitudes, Norms, and Beliefs Toward Mental Health Care.

Across the United States, Black women are likely to have unmet mental health needs, with greater personal, social, and structural barriers to mental health treatment compared to other groups. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) may help to conceptualize young Black women’s mental health beliefs and help-seeking behaviors. The current study aimed to use the TPB framework and a concurrent mixed methods approach to explore behavioral, normative, and control beliefs toward seeking mental health care among a sample of young Black women from community settings. The sample consisted of 33 Black wome

Strengthening Health Science Communication in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Policy and Technology Perspective.

Effective health communication remains a critical challenge across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where systemic barriers hinder disease prevention and healthcare equity. This evidence synthesis evaluates communication interventions through a comprehensive analysis of behavioral strategies, mobile health innovations, and community engagement approaches. Our findings reveal short message service (SMS)-based systems significantly improve malaria management outcomes, while demonstrating limited efficacy for chronic disease contexts. Behavioral interventions show particular promise for maternal care de

Advancing early and equitable detection of dementia: key learnings/challenges, recent innovations, and future directions.

Worldwide, over half of all individuals with dementia are undiagnosed. In the United States, racial, ethnic, and economic inequities mirror global findings, with higher rates of missed and delayed diagnosis and poorer diagnostic quality among minoritized and disadvantaged groups. For example, delayed diagnosis is more prevalent among people identifying as non-Hispanic Black or Latino than non-Hispanic White. Systematic efforts to improve detection can increase diagnosis rates; there is broad consensus that earlier detection and initiation of focused care and support services benefit both affec

Addressing health equity in pediatric surgical care in the United States- Progress and challenges.

There are notable inequities in health outcomes for children based on their social determinants of health (SDOH), including where they are born and live, their primary language, their race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and more. These health inequities are not restricted to resource limited settings; here we highlight three broad topics that are relevant to pediatric surgeons in the United States (US): access to care and disparities, and examples of inequities in firearm-related injuries and appendicitis. Most of our patients will at some point require operative interventions, yet there

Working towards a master patient index and unique identifiers to improve health systems: the example of Myanmar.

In the health systems of many countries, there is neither a requirement to collect a minimum set of demographic information during patient registration nor a standard way of identifying patients. This impedes the provision of integrated, good-quality care for individual patients and, at the system level, prevents generation of the high-quality data necessary for effective management and continuous improvement. Assigning each patient a unique identifier (UID) to create a master patient index (MPI) is therefore essential to ensure data interoperability across all the points of patient care withi

Factors Affecting the Referral Rate of the Hoarding Disorder at Primary Mental Health Care in Quebec.

Hoarding disorder (HD) places an important burden on people with HD, on their family members and society. In this paper we evaluate help-seeking in HD at primary mental health, measured in referral rate, together with its individual, environmental and structural correlates. We conducted an aggregate study by combining existing official data with our own survey data at the catchment area level. We found a mean annual referral rate of 1.58 (SD = 1.79) cases of HD in primary mental health facilities per 10,000 of adult population. The referrals rate correlated with socio-demographic characteristi
