Distance between institutions of incarceration and procedural abortion facilities in Canada.

OBJECTIVES: People incarcerated in facilities for women and girls face barriers to accessing abortion, including unclear legislation, operational procedures, and distance. While medication abortion could mitigate distance barriers, prison is not a hospitable environment for medication abortion. Considering this limitation, this paper aimed to identify the distance from institutions of incarceration designated for women and girls to procedural abortion facilities in Canada. STUDY DESIGN: This study builds on an inventory of the 67 institutions of incarceration designated for women and girls ac

Polygenic risk score phenome-wide association study reveals an association between endometriosis and testosterone.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis affects 1 in 9 women, yet it is poorly understood with long diagnostic delays, invasive diagnoses, and poor treatment outcomes. Characterised by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside of the uterus, its main symptoms are pain and infertility. Endometriosis often co-occurs with other conditions, which may provide insights into the origins of endometriosis. METHODS: Here a polygenic risk score phenome-wide association study of endometriosis was conducted in the UK Biobank to investigate the pleiotropic effects of a genetic liability to endometriosis. The relat

'I can't go to her when I have a problem': sexuality communication between South African adolescent girls and young women and their mothers.

Parent-adolescent sexuality communication, the process in which parents and their adolescent children discuss sexuality and sexual and reproductive health, is a key component for adolescents' protective behaviours. Open communication with parents, particularly mothers, enables informed sexual and reproductive health (SRH) decision-making amongst adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). As part of a qualitative study evaluating a South African combination HIV prevention intervention for AGYW, we explored perspectives on SRH communication among AGYW and mothers of AGYW, and the effects of the in

Joint effect of particulate matter and cigarette smoke on women's sex hormones.

BACKGROUND: Although relationships between exposure to air pollution and reproductive health are broadly studied, mechanisms behind these phenomena are still unknown. The aim of the study was to assess whether exposure to particulate matter (PM10) and tobacco smoking have an impact on menstrual profiles of 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) and the E2/P ratio. METHODS: Levels of sex hormones were measured daily in saliva during the entire menstrual cycle among 132 healthy, urban women. Exposure to smoking (active or passive) was assessed by questionnaire, whilst exposure to PM10 with mun

Bayesian spatial analysis of socio-demographic factors influencing pregnancy termination and its residual geographic variation among ever-married women of reproductive age in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Unsafe pregnancy termination is a major public health concern among reproductive-aged women in many developing countries. This study evaluated the socio-demographic characteristics, as well as residual spatial correlation in pregnancy termination among Bangladeshi women. METHODS: Secondary data was obtained from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey for the survey year 2014. Data included 17,863 samples of ever-married women between the ages of 15-49 years, which is a national representative sample in Bangladesh. Bayesian spatial logistic regression was used to assess the a

Maternal schizophrenia and adverse birth outcomes: what mediates the risk?

PURPOSE: Maternal schizophrenia is associated with adverse birth outcomes, but the reasons for this remain unclear. In a population-based cohort of infants born to women with schizophrenia, we determined the occurrence of key perinatal outcomes and explored whether factors identifiable in our datasets explained any elevated risk. METHODS: Using population-level health administrative data linked to clinical birth-registry data in Ontario, Canada (2006-2011), we examined the relative risk (RR) of preterm birth (< 37 weeks), small for gestational age (SGA), and Apgar scores < 8 in infants of wom

Emergence of Brucella suis in dogs in New South Wales, Australia: clinical findings and implications for zoonotic transmission.

BACKGROUND: Animal reservoirs of brucellosis constitute an ongoing threat to human health globally, with foodborne, occupational and recreational exposures creating opportunities for transmission. In Australia and the United States, hunting of feral pigs has been identified as the principal risk factor for human brucellosis due to Brucella suis. Following increased reports of canine B. suis infection, we undertook a review of case notification data and veterinary records to address knowledge gaps about transmission, clinical presentation, and zoonotic risks arising from infected dogs. RESULTS

Excess mortality in women of reproductive age from low-income countries: a Swedish national register study.

BACKGROUND: Cause-of-death statistics is widely used to monitor the health of a population. African immigrants have, in several European studies, shown to be at an increased risk of maternal death, but few studies have investigated cause-specific mortality rates in female immigrants. METHODS: In this national study, based on the Swedish Cause of Death Register, we studied 27,957 women of reproductive age (aged 15-49 years) who died between 1988 and 2007. Age-standardized mortality rates per 100,000 person years and relative risks for death and underlying causes of death, grouped according to

Reproductive-tract infections in women in low-income, low-prevalence situations: assessment of syndromic management in Matlab, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: In the control of reproductive-tract infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), in low-income and middle-income countries, WHO recommends syndromic management for individuals with symptoms. This intervention was initially developed in areas where prevalence of such infections is high. We investigated the clinical effectiveness and cost of this approach among a group of women with a low prevalence of infection. METHODS: During a 5-month period, we investigated all women complaining of abnormal vaginal discharge and seeking care at maternal and child health/family

Incretin Analogues for Weight Reduction in Non-Diabetic Obese: A Review of Liraglutide, Semaglutide, and Tirzepatide Beyond Glycemic Control.

Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease that contributes to a broad range of cardiometabolic, reproductive, and psychological disorders. Representing a major global health challenge, obesity can be addressed by lifestyle modifications such as reduced calorie intake, physical activity, adequate sleep, and stress management to help achieve sustainable weight loss and improve metabolic health in the long term. Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) are the two naturally produced incretin hormones in the gastrointestinal tract. Incretin analogue

Anaesthesia Waste Gases and Bioethics: Balancing Patient Care, Environmental Responsibility, and Occupational Safety.

Anaesthesia waste gases (AWGs) represent a significant yet often overlooked contributor to healthcare's environmental footprint, with implications extending beyond ecological concerns to encompass occupational hazards and complex ethical considerations. This article examines the intersection of AWGs and bioethics through the framework of environmental stewardship, occupational health principles, patient-centered care, and distributive justice. Contemporary volatile anaesthetics possess global warming potentials thousands of times greater than carbon dioxide, while implicated occupational expos

Mucus production, host-microbiome interactions, hormone sensitivity, and innate immune responses modeled in human cervix chips.

Modulation of the cervix by steroid hormones and commensal microbiome play a central role in the health of the female reproductive tract. Here we describe organ-on-a-chip (Organ Chip) models that recreate the human cervical epithelial-stromal interface with a functional epithelial barrier and production of mucus with biochemical and hormone-responsive properties similar to living cervix. When Cervix Chips are populated with optimal healthy versus dysbiotic microbial communities (dominated by Lactobacillus crispatus and Gardnerella vaginalis, respectively), significant differences in tissue inn

Hormonal contraceptives, stress, and the brain: The critical need for animal models.

Hormonal contraceptives are among the most important health and economic developments in the 20thCentury, providing unprecedented reproductive control and a range of health benefits including decreased premenstrual symptoms and protections against various cancers. Hormonal contraceptives modulate neural function and stress responsivity. These changes are usually innocuous or even beneficial, including their effects onmood. However, in approximately 4-10% of users, or up to 30 million people at any given time, hormonal contraceptives trigger depression or anxiety symptoms. How hormonal contrace
