Sex differences in number of X chromosomes and X-chromosome inactivation in females promote greater variability in hearing among males.

BACKGROUND: For more than 150 years, research studies have documented greater variability across males than across females ("greater male variability"-GMV) over a broad range of behavioral and morphological measures. In placental mammals, an ancient difference between males and females that may make an important contribution to GMV is the different pattern of activation of X chromosomes across cells in females (mosaic inactivation of one the two X chromosomes across cells) vs males (consistent activation of a single X chromosome in all cells). In the current study, variability in hearing thres

Longitudinal alteration of cortical thickness and volume in high-impact sports.

Collegiate football athletes are subject to repeated head impacts. The purpose of this study was to determine whether this exposure can lead to changes in brain structure. This prospective cohort study was conducted with up to 4 years of follow-up on 63 football (high-impact) and 34 volleyball (control) male collegiate athletes with a total of 315 MRI scans (after exclusions: football n = 50, volleyball n = 24, total scans = 273) using high-resolution structural imaging. Volumetric and cortical thickness estimates were derived using FreeSurfer 5.3's longitudinal pipeline. A linear mixed-

Patient-reported outcome domains for the esophageal CONDUIT report card: a prospective trial to establish domains.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (QoL) deteriorates immediately after esophagectomy. Patients may benefit from periodic assessments to detect increased morbidity on the basis of subjective self-reports. Using input from patients and health care providers, we developed a brief prototype for the esophageal conduit questionnaire (Mayo Clinic Esophageal Conduit Outcomes Noting Dysphagia/Dumping, and Unknown outcomes with Intermittent symptoms over Time after esophageal reconstruction [CONDUIT] Report Card) and previously used it in comparative research. The present study aimed to expand

Pure-tone hearing asymmetry: a logistic approach modeling age, sex, and noise exposure history.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) can be an early sign of vestibular schwannoma (VS). However, recognizing VS-induced AHL is challenging. There is no universally accepted definition of a "medically significant pure-tone hearing asymmetry," in part because AHL is a common feature of medically benign forms of hearing loss (e.g., age- or firearm-related hearing loss). In most cases, the determination that an observed AHL does not come from a benign cause involves subjective clinical judgment. PURPOSE: Our purpose was threefold: (1) to quantify hearing asymmetry distributions in a large g

Prophylactic use of factor VIII: an economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of exogenous factor VIII therapy, several studies have explored the clinical benefits of prophylactic use of factor VIII. Little research, though, has focused on the economic aspects of this regimen. We conducted a cost analysis using data from the Orthopedic Outcomes Study, a prospective, cross-national study of the clinical outcomes associated with different patterns of factor VIII utilization to examine the health care costs incurred and expenditures averted in patients receiving on-demand versus prophylactic use of factor VIII in hemophilia. METHODS AND

Identification and experimental validation of BMX as a crucial PANoptosis‑related gene for immune response in Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating neurological condition that severely impacts motor, sensory, and autonomic functions, leading to significant challenges in patient quality of life and imposing substantial economic burdens on society. PANoptosis is an emerging concept in programmed cell death that combines three key processes: pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis. Research has demonstrated the significant roles of apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis in the progression of SCI. As such, targeting PANoptosis-related genes may offer new therapeutic targets and clinically relevant tre
