The kinetics and stoichiometry of S-oxidation of semisynthetic penicillins (amoxicillin trihydrate, ampicillin trihydrate, sodium salt of oxacillin and ticarcillin disodium salt) by potassium hydrogen peroxymonosulfate in aqueous solutions at pH 3-6 was studied by iodometric titration: 1 mol of KNSO5 per 1 mol of penicillin, the quantitative interaction is achieved in 1 min (time of observation). A unified method was developed and the possibility of quantification of penicillins by the iodometric method using potassium hydrogen peroxymonosulfate as an analytical reagent was shown.

The earliest report we have had of an outbreak of botulism in Norway is from 1934, of five cases caused by contaminated salted and dried ham. All patients survived. This paper describes an early outbreak of botulism in the county of Hedmark in 1831 on the basis of a previously unknown report to the county governor from district public health officer Peter Heiberg (1778-1849). A 36-year-old female patient developed eczema from wearing gold jewelry. Epicutaneous skin tests were performed with gold leaf, potassium dicyanoaurate, gold sodium thiosulphate, gold chloride, sodium chloroaurate and potassium bromoaurate. The test was positive with gold sodium thiosulphate only. Blast transformation was induced with all the gold salts except sodium chloroaurate, and the positive responses seemed to be dose-dependent. In vitro gold salt-induced reactions are useful in the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis.

The incidence of side-effects produced by meglumine diatrizoate and meglumine-, meglumine-calcium-, and sodium-calcium-magnesium metrizoate, was compared in 800 urographies. Patients older than 60 years seem to have less side-effects than younger patients. The incidence of sensation of warmth seems to be higher in patients who have had previous urographies, compared to those who are examined for the first time. The incidence of this effect is higher for the sodium-calcium-magnesium salt of metrizoate, than for other salts of metrizoate.

In recent years, industrial fermentation researchers have shifted their attention from liquid to solid and semisolid culture conditions. We converted liquid cultures to the semisolid mode by adding high levels of gelatin. Gastric salt-acid secretion was studied in three comparative patient groups with gastric ulcer, endoscopically confirmed, combination of gastric and duodenal ulcers.
