Atypical right hemisphere response to slow temporal modulations in children with developmental dyslexia.

Phase entrainment of neuronal oscillations is thought to play a central role in encoding speech. Children with developmental dyslexia show impaired phonological processing of speech, proposed theoretically to be related to atypical phase entrainment to slower temporal modulations in speech (<10Hz). While studies of children with dyslexia have found atypical phase entrainment in the delta band (~2Hz), some studies of adults with developmental dyslexia have shown impaired entrainment in the low gamma band (~35-50Hz). Meanwhile, studies of neurotypical adults suggest asymmetric temporal sensitivi

The zoonotic potential of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis: a systematic review and meta-analyses of the evidence.

This systematic review-meta-analysis appraises and summarizes all the available research (128 papers) on the zoonotic potential of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis. The latter has been debated for a century due to pathogenic and clinical similarities between Johne's disease in ruminants and Crohn's disease (108 studies) in humans and recently for involvement in other human diseases; human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (2), sarcoidosis (3), diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM) (7) and type 2 (3), multiple sclerosis (5) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (2). Comparisons of refractive errors between twins and singletons in Chinese school-age samples.

Studies have reported that refractive errors are associated with premature births. As twins have higher prevalence of prematurity than singletons, it is important to assess similarity of the prevalence of refractive errors in twins and singletons for proper interpretations and generalizations of the findings from twin studies. We compared refractive errors and diopter hours between 561 pairs of twins and 3757 singletons who are representative of school-age children (7-15 years) residing in an urban area of southern China. We found that the means and variances of the continuous measurement of s

Quantifying household-level sharing of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens between pets and their owners: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Companion animals are increasingly recognized as potential reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria, yet the frequency of sharing between pets and their owners remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate household-level co-occurrence ('sharing') of AMR pathogens. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for studies sampling pets and owners from the same household and assessing genetic or phenotypic relatedness of AMR bacteria. Random-effects generalized linear mixed models were used to estimate pooled prevalences, with subgroup and sensitiv

Association of Placental Pathology with Physical and Neuronal Development of Infants: A Narrative Review and Reclassification of the Literature by the Consensus Statement of the Amsterdam Placental Workshop Group.

The placenta is the largest fetal organ, which connects the mother to the fetus and supports most aspects of organogenesis through the transport of nutrients and gases. However, further studies are needed to assess placental pathology as a reliable predictor of long-term physical growth or neural development in newborns. The Consensus Statement of the Amsterdam Placental Workshop Group (APWGCS) on the sampling and definition of placental lesions has resulted in diagnostic uniformity in describing the most common pathological lesions of the placenta and contributed to the international standard

A systematic review of altered resting-state networks in early deafness and implications for cochlear implantation outcomes.

Auditory deprivation following congenital/pre-lingual deafness (C/PD) can drastically affect brain development and its functional organisation. This systematic review intends to extend current knowledge of the impact of C/PD and deafness duration on brain resting-state networks (RSNs), review changes in RSNs and spoken language outcomes post-cochlear implant (CI) and draw conclusions for future research. The systematic literature search followed the PRISMA guideline. Two independent reviewers searched four electronic databases using combined keywords: 'auditory deprivation', 'congenital/prelin

Association between weight loss and survival outcomes in patients with gastric cancer: a meta-analysis.

Patients with gastric cancer often experience weight loss. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between weight loss and survival outcomes in gastric cancer patients. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science according to the PECOS criteria: population (gastric cancer patients), exposure (weight loss), comparator (weight stable), outcomes [overall survival (OS) or recurrence-free survival], and study design (cohort studies). The prognostic value was expressed by combing the fully adjusted hazard ratio with 95% confidence interval (CI) for weight loss versus stable weig

Application of therapeutic drug monitoring to the treatment of bacterial central nervous system infection: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial central nervous system (CNS) infection is challenging to treat and carries high risk of recurrence, morbidity, and mortality. Low CNS penetration of antibiotics may contribute to poor clinical outcomes from bacterial CNS infections. The current application of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to management of bacterial CNS infection was reviewed. METHODS: Studies were included if they described adults treated for a suspected/confirmed bacterial CNS infection and had antibiotic drug concentration(s) determined that affected individual treatment. RESULTS: One-hundred-and-

Leveraging large observational studies to discover genetic determinants of drug concentrations: A proof-of-concept study.

Large, observational genetic studies are commonly used to identify genetic factors associated with diseases and disease-related traits. Such cohorts have not been commonly used to identify genetic predictors of drug dosing or concentrations, perhaps because of the heterogeneity in drug dosing and formulation, and the random timing of blood sampling. We hypothesized that large sample sizes relative to traditional pharmacokinetic studies would compensate for this variability and enable the identification of pharmacogenetic predictors of drug concentrations. We performed a cross-sectional, proof-

Autopsies in pandemics - a perspective on barriers and benefits. Is it time for a revival?

Influenza virus and coronavirus pandemics regularly sweep the globe, at great cost of health and economy. Our aim was to conduct a PubMed search for autopsy studies on influenza and coronavirus to investigate the contribution of autopsies during pandemics, focussing on autopsy methods and procedures and the role of autopsy findings in pandemics. The retrieved autopsy studies generally relied on microscopy, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), immunostaining and electron microscopy. Most were small and reported on lung effects, including diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), pneumonia and tracheobronchiti

THBS2/CA19-9 Detecting Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma at Diagnosis Underperforms in Prediagnostic Detection: Implications for Biomarker Advancement.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is often diagnosed too late for effective therapy. The classic strategy for early detection biomarker advancement consists of initial retrospective phases of discovery and validation with tissue samples taken from individuals diagnosed with disease, compared with controls. Using this approach, we previously reported the discovery of a blood biomarker panel consisting of thrombospondin-2 (THBS2) and CA19-9 that together could discriminate resectable stage I and IIa PDAC as well as stages III and IV PDAC, with c-statistic values in the range of 0.96 to 0.9

Correlates of At-Risk and Problem Gambling Among Veterans in Massachusetts.

Few studies have examined problem gambling among veterans and, of those studies, there are conflicting conclusions surrounding correlates of problem gambling in veterans. Our study aims to assess problem gambling prevalence among veterans using non-Veterans Affairs data and to evaluate correlates of problem gambling among veterans in a general population sample. We obtained a probability sample of adult Massachusetts residents using address based sampling in 2013-2014. Participants completed a questionnaire on demographics, veteran status, and gambling behaviors and motivations. We identified

Factors influencing HIV-1 phylogenetic clustering.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A major goal of public health in relation to HIV/AIDS is to prevent new transmissions in communities. Phylogenetic techniques have improved our understanding of the structure and dynamics of HIV transmissions. However, there is still no consensus about phylogenetic methodology, sampling coverage, gene target and/or minimum fragment size. RECENT FINDINGS: Several studies use a combined methodology, which includes both a genetic or patristic distance cut-off and a branching support threshold to identify phylogenetic clusters. However, the choice about these thresholds remains

The effect of vaginal lubrication on unsatisfactory results of cervical smears.

OBJECTIVE: Speculum lubrication with water-based gels before cervical smear sampling has been investigated and commented on thoroughly during the last decade. The present meta-analysis was based on randomized and quasi-randomized control trials and evaluated its impact on unsatisfactory cytologic results. We also assessed its efficacy in producing lower pain scores during speculum insertion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched MEDLINE (1966- 2013), Scopus (2004-2013), Clinicaltrials.org (1997-2013), Popline (1973-2013), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (1999-2013), and
