Atypical moles are benign pigmented lesions. Although they are benign, they exhibit some of the clinical and histologic features of malignant melanoma. They are more common in fair-skinned individuals and in those with high sun exposure. Atypical moles are characterized by size of 6 mm or more at the greatest dimension, color variegation, border irregularity, and pebbled texture. An 8-year-old boy presented with a lifelong history of a vascular mass overlying his right mandible with central coarse telangiectasias and peripheral pallor. Histopathologic examination showed a proliferation of blood vessels in the dermis. Ultrasound examination identified a mix of high- and low-flow vessels within the lesion. These findings were consistent with a noninvoluting congenital hemangioma, a rare vascular tumor that is fully formed at birth that subsequently grows proportionately with the patient and does not regress.

The authors describe a girl who was evaluated at 7 years old because of facial segmental hemangioma associated with unilateral persistent trigeminal artery, bilateral proatlantal arteries, hypoplasia of 1 posterior cerebral artery, kinking of 1 internal carotid artery at 2 different levels, and transdural collateral vascularization supplying the posterior areas of the cerebral hemispheres. This is the first patient known to have a cutaneous hemangioma associated with bilateral proatlantal arteries despite having a unilateral facial hemangioma.

Since dermoscopy is becoming widely accepted and used in the medical community, there is now the need for a standardized method for documenting dermoscopic findings so as to be able to effectively communicate such information among colleagues.

A connection between vitamin D deficiency and severe health problems including various types of cancer has been demonstrated.
