Traumatic Venous Sinus Thrombosis: Patient and Practice Patterns at a Major Trauma Center.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury can lead to venous sinus injury and thrombosis, which may be associated with elevated intracranial pressure and poor outcomes. We sought to examine the risk factors, management, and clinical outcomes of traumatic venous sinus thrombosis (tVST). METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of our institutional radiology database for final radiology reports from 2013 to 2022 that contained the terms "venous sinus thrombosis," "sinus thrombosis," or "venous occlusion." tVST was detected on computed tomography and confirmed by a board-certified neuroradiologist.

Chronic Refractory Insomnia in a Patient With Undiagnosed Bipolar Disorder and Long-Standing Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a form of acquired brain injury, occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue. TBI can be classified into primary and secondary brain injury. Primary injury refers to the structural damage caused upon impact. Secondary injury refers to the damage from subsequent cellular processes following a prior injury, such as excitotoxicity, free radical generation, calcium-mediated damage, hypoxia, and increased intracranial pressure. Evaluation of Epidemiologic Factors, Radiographic Features, and Pathologic Findings for Predicting Peritumoral Brain Edema in Meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: Despite several treatment options that are available for meningiomas, surgery is the only method currently practiced. Peritumoral brain edema (PTBE) in meningiomas causes difficulty marginalizing the dissection in an intraoperative setting. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the epidemiological variables, imaging characteristics, and pathologic parameters are correlated with the presence of PTBE in meningiomas. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective study from 2015 to 2018. SUBJECTS: In all, 550 patients with histopathologically confirmed meningioma were included. After exclusion of patients with

Morphogenesis of Canine Chiari Malformation and Secondary Syringomyelia: Disorders of Cerebrospinal Fluid Circulation.

Chiari-like Malformation (CM) and secondary syringomyelia (SM), as well as their analogous human conditions, is a complex developmental condition associated with pain and accompanying welfare concerns. CM/SM is diagnosed ever more frequently, thanks in part to the increased availability of magnetic resonance imaging in veterinary medicine. Research over the last two decades has focused primarily on its pathophysiology relating to overcrowding of the cranial caudal fossa. More recent characterizations of CM/SM include brachycephaly with osseous reduction and neural parenchymal displacement invo

Isolated Unilateral Frontosphenoidal Suture Synostosis in Six Patients: Lessons Learned in Diagnosis and Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the rarity of isolated frontosphenoidal suture synostosis clinical diagnosis can be challenging. This study of 6 patients aims to review the clinical, radiological findings, and operative techniques used to correct the underlying pathology. METHODS: Patients with isolated frontosphenoidal suture craniosynostosis were selected from a retrospective review of 88 patients with unicoronal synostosis treated during a 3-year period. Two-dimensional photography of patients' soft tissue morphology from the vertex view allowed assessment of the following morphology: frontal bossing

[Injuries of parasagittal bridging veins in fatally wounded victims of motor vehicle accidents].

Experimental data and clinical as well as postmortem experiences have indicated that subdural hematomas are less frequent in acceleration injuries in traffic accidents compared to falls or assaults. The present report demonstrates that this does not hold true in the same way for bridging vein ruptures (one of the predominant causes for subdural bleedings). Ruptures of these vessels without subdural bleeding (SDB) are only seldom mentioned in the literature. However, if no SDB is present, no one will look for these structures. In our institute a systematic analysis of the bridging veins in all

The classification of frontal sinus pneumatization patterns by CT-based volumetry.

PURPOSE: We aimed to define the classification of frontal sinus pneumatization patterns according to three-dimensional volume measurements. METHODS: Datasets of 148 sides of 74 dry skulls were generated by the computerized tomography-based volumetry to measure frontal sinus volumes. The cutoff points for frontal sinus hypoplasia and hyperplasia were tested by ROC curve analysis and the validity of the diagnostic points was measured. RESULTS: The overall frequencies were 4.1, 14.2, 37.2 and 44.5 % for frontal sinus aplasia, hypoplasia, medium size and hyperplasia, respectively. The aplasia wa

A case of hypoglossal nerve palsy with evolving cranial nerve involvement in renal cell carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma is a rare pediatric solid tumor that typically presents with hematuria, abdominal mass, or flank pain. It is uncommon for renal cell carcinoma to manifest with headache and isolated extra-urogenital symptoms. We present, to our knowledge, the first case of renal cell carcinoma with bony metastases, presenting initially as isolated cranial nerve twelve palsy. Although bony metastases can occur in renal cell carcinoma, skull-based metastases and cranial neuropathies are exceedingly rare, especially in the pediatric population. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the

Surveillance for work-related skull fractures in Michigan.

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to develop a multisource surveillance system for work-related skull fractures. METHODS: Records on work-related skull fractures were obtained from Michigan's 134 hospitals, Michigan's Workers' Compensation Agency and death certificates. Cases from the three sources were matched to eliminate duplicates from more than one source. Workplaces where the most severe injuries occurred were referred to OSHA for an enforcement inspection. RESULTS: There were 318 work related skull fractures, not including facial fractures, between 2010 and 2012. In 2012, after the inclus

3D numerical investigation of a frequency-domain model-based method for fast transcranial photoacoustic imaging.

Objective. Transcranial photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) is challenged by skull-induced aberrations. Although the time-reversal (TR) method can compensate for these effects, it requires full-wave simulations for every frame, making it impractical for time-sensitive applications. To address this limitation, we propose a frequency-domain model-based (FDMB) method for fast and accurate transcranial PACT.Approach. The FDMB method is numerically validated against the TR method by evaluating performance under varying numbers of sensor elements, data sampling rates, and perturbations in both

Oral Examination in a Random Anesthetized Canine Population for the Prevalence of Periodontal Disease and Fractured Teeth.

The prevalence of periodontal and dental pathology in a random canine population has not been established by a single prospective clinical evaluation using defined and accepted diagnostic criteria. A prospective anesthetized visual examination and periodontal probing, without imaging, of the canine dentition in a random dog population (369 dogs) was performed. Oral examination and periodontal probing using the American Veterinary Dental College periodontal staging criteria for clinical attachment loss and diagnosis of periodontal disease was used. Periodontal disease stages (PD)1-4 were identi

A sonoelectric artificial meningeal device for enhanced implantable electric field ablation of glioblastoma.

Electric field tumor therapy has emerged as a promising non-invasive treatment for glioblastoma (GBM), but its clinical efficacy is severely limited by skull-induced attenuation of electric field intensity. To overcome this limitation, we developed a multilayer thin-film sonoelectric meningeal device (MF-SMD) consisting of an electrospun PLGA artificial meningeal scaffold integrated with a microneedle-based triboelectric film. This device converts externally applied low-intensity ultrasound into intracranial electric fields, enabling transcranial, localized, and controllable electric ablation

Sclerotic bone lesions as a potential imaging biomarker for the diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous-sclerosis-complex (TSC) is associated with a high lifetime risk of severe complications. Clinical manifestations are largely variable and diagnosis is often missed. Sclerotic-bone-lesions (SBL) could represent a potential imaging biomarker for the diagnosis of TSC. In this study, computed tomography (CT) data sets of 49 TSC patients (31 females) were included and compared to an age/sex matched control group. Imaging features of SBLs included frequency, size and location pattern. Sensitivities, specificities and cutoff values for the diagnosis of TSC were established for the skull, tho

Craniofacial reconstruction as a prediction problem using a Latent Root Regression model.

In this paper, we present a computer-assisted method for facial reconstruction. This method provides an estimation of the facial shape associated with unidentified skeletal remains. Current computer-assisted methods using a statistical framework rely on a common set of extracted points located on the bone and soft-tissue surfaces. Most of the facial reconstruction methods then consist of predicting the position of the soft-tissue surface points, when the positions of the bone surface points are known. We propose to use Latent Root Regression for prediction. The results obtained are then compar

Determining fitting ranges of various bone conduction hearing aids.

OBJECTIVES: To define fitting ranges for nine bone conduction devices (BCDs) over different frequencies based on the device's maximum power output (MPO) and to validate the assessment of MPO of BCDs in the ear canal. BACKGROUND: Maximum power output (MPO) is an important characteristic when fitting BCDs. It is the highest output level a device can deliver and is one of the major determinants of a device's fitting range. A skull simulator can be used to verify MPO of percutaneous BCDs. No such simulator is available for active and passive transcutaneous devices. DESIGN: The MPO of nine differ

Adaptive Positioning and Targeting Optimization in Transcranial Focused Ultrasound (tFUS): A Numerical Study.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) has garnered significant attention owing to its capacity for precise depth penetration and high spatial resolution within tissues. However, the pronounced heterogeneity of the skull presents substantial challenges to precise targeting, limiting optimal therapeutic efficacy. Precise positioning is urgently needed. METHODS: A homogeneous spherical model was employed as the attenuation reference. In the skull model, the transducer operating matrix was determined using a radius positioning method, and an acceleration factor was introduced to exclu

Derivation of a Predictive Score for Hemorrhagic Progression of Cerebral Contusions in Moderate and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUNDS: After traumatic brain injury (TBI), hemorrhagic progression of contusions (HPCs) occurs frequently. However, there is no established predictive score to identify high-risk patients for HPC. METHODS: Consecutive patients who were hospitalized (2008-2013) with non-penetrating moderate or severe TBI were studied. The primary outcome was HPC, defined by both a relative increase in contusion volume by ≥30 % and an absolute increase by ≥10 mL on serial imaging. Logistic regression models were created to identify independent risk factors for HPC. The HPC Score was then derived based on
