Tobacco use in patients with ENT tumours: Deficits in the provision of education and smoking cessation support.

PURPOSE: Smoking is not only one of the main risk factors for the development of most malignant and numerous benign ENT tumours but also has an important influence on therapy and prognosis. Even quitting smoking at the time of diagnosis significantly reduces mortality. Patients have a particularly strong desire to stop smoking when they are diagnosed. The present study investigated to what extent patients were aware of the relationships between smoking and the development and prognosis of tumours and how much information and smoking cessation support they were offered by physicians. METHODS:

Evaluation of 'Shisha No Thanks' - a co-design social marketing campaign on the harms of waterpipe smoking.

BACKGROUND: Waterpipe (shisha) is becoming increasingly popular worldwide, particularly among young people; and in some countries, it is one of the few forms of tobacco use that is increasing. While there is a growing body of evidence of the harms of waterpipe smoke, there is a scarcity of research of interventions to address this form of tobacco consumption. METHODS: The Shisha No Thanks project was a co-design social marketing campaign that aimed to raise awareness of the harms of waterpipe smoking among young people from an Arabic speaking background in Sydney, Australia. The campaign dist

Cigarette Smoking Associated with Colorectal Cancer Survival: A Nationwide, Population-Based Cohort Study.

We investigate whether cigarette smoking is associated with survival in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) through a nationwide population-based cohort study in Taiwan. The Taiwan Cancer Registry and National Health Insurance Research Database were used to identify data from patients with CRC from 2011 to 2017. Tobacco use was evaluated based on the smoking status, intensity, and duration before cancer diagnosis. A total of 18,816 patients was included. A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated smoking to be significantly associated with the CRC mortality risk (log-rank p = 0.0001). A mult

Effects of COVID-19-Related Disruptions on Service Use in a Large Smoking Cessation Program.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic caused a rapid shift to virtual care, with largely unknown consequences for accessibility. The purpose of this study is to examine pandemic-related changes in use of care for smoking cessation. AIMS AND METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis 65 565 enrollments in a large smoking cessation program in Ontario, Canada. We used piecewise mixed-effects regression to examine how weeks nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) received, as well as counseling provided and visits attended, varied with date of enrollment over three time periods: more than 6 months befor

Assisted versus referred pharmacy smoking interventions for patients with thoracic malignancies or pulmonary nodules.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is the foremost preventable cause of death, disease, and disability in the United States. Continued tobacco use in malignant disease contributes to treatment failure and disease progression. Pharmacists are pivotal to tobacco cessation counseling, management, and follow up. METHODS: This retrospective, observational, single-center, cohort study of ambulatory cancer patients was designed to assess the impact of assisted versus "Ask, Advise, Refer" (AAR) pharmacy-driven smoking cessation interventions on patient-reported quit rates at 30- and 90-days. Those included were

Electronic cigarettes versus nicotine patches for smoking cessation in pregnancy: a randomized controlled trial.

Nicotine replacement therapy, in the form of nicotine patches, is commonly offered to pregnant women who smoke to help them to stop smoking, but this approach has limited efficacy in this population. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are also used by pregnant women who smoke but their safety and efficacy in pregnancy are unknown. Here, we report the results of a randomized controlled trial in 1,140 participants comparing refillable e-cigarettes with nicotine patches. Pregnant women who smoked were randomized to e-cigarettes (n = 569) or nicotine patches (n = 571). In the unadjusted analysis

The Role of Social Position Within Peer Groups in Distress-Motivated Smoking Among Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between smoking and adolescents' peer relationships is complex, with studies showing increased risk of smoking for adolescents of both very high and very low social position. A key question is whether the impact of social position on smoking depends on an adolescent's level of coping motives (i.e., their desire to use smoking to mitigate negative affect). METHOD: We assessed how social position predicts nicotine dependence in a longitudinal sample (N = 3,717; 44.8% male; mean age = 13.41 years) of adolescent lifetime smokers measured between 6th and 12th grades. The Presence of Smoking and Alcohol Imaginary in Popular Movies Available in Netflix Online Streaming Platform.

Exposure of tobacco and alcohol consumption in media and filmmaking has been related to promotion of smoking and drinking in adults. Current regulation aims to restrict tobacco and alcohol advertising in order to avoid alcohol consumption and smoking habits. We aimed to assess the impact of smoking and drinking habits in video-on-demand services. Three independent investigators watched the 50 most popular movies available in Netflix streaming platform, according to York Times and recorded incidence of smoking and drinking scenes for both primary and secondary actors. 45 movies were included in

Implementation of Effective Smoking Cessation Strategies for People Living with HIV: A Pilot Implementation Study.

INTRODUCTION: Use of tobacco products carries significant long-term health risks, and rates of smoking in persons living with HIV are as high as two to three times that of the general population. This study aimed to increase assessment of readiness to quit smoking and provide cessation counseling to patients receiving HIV care through an infectious disease clinic. METHODS: This study was a pilot implementation in a single-center teaching hospital. In total, 603 active patients with HIV were followed in clinic at the time of the study start; of these, 79 were active tobacco smokers (13%) and e

The effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions in rural and remote populations: Systematic review and meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Rural and remote residents are more likely to smoke tobacco than those in major cities. However, they may experience unique systemic, provider, and individual barriers to accessing smoking cessation treatments, including distance and limited resources. Understanding the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions in this population is important due to higher smoking-related disease burden and death compared to those in major cities. METHODS: Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, PsychINFO, and Cochrane Library were searched until 19-02/2021. Inclusion criteria were randomised controlled t

A Randomized Trial of Telephone-Based Smoking Cessation Treatment in the Lung Cancer Screening Setting.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer mortality is reduced via low-dose computed tomography screening and treatment of early-stage disease. Evidence-based smoking cessation treatment in the lung screening setting can further reduce mortality. We report the results of a cessation trial from the National Cancer Institute's Smoking Cessation at Lung Examination collaboration. METHODS: Eligible patients (n = 818) aged 50-80 years were randomly assigned (May 2017-January 2021) to the intensive vs minimal arms (8 vs 3 phone sessions plus 8 vs 2 weeks of nicotine patches, respectively). Food insecurity, social needs, and smoking status among patients in a county hospital system.

Tobacco use in the U.S. is increasingly concentrated among populations with socioeconomic disadvantages such as food insecurity. Building on prior studies showing that food insecurity increases odds of cigarette smoking, the current study sought to examine how food insecurity and other social needs, particularly financial strain, transportation barriers, and housing/utility insecurity, were associated with smoking status among adult patients seen in a county hospital system. We analyzed data from the electronic health record of patients from The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, Ohio, USA), cover

Insight into the Burden of Malignant Respiratory Tumors and their Relationship with Smoking Rates and Lead Contamination in Mexico.

We aimed to report the results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 related to respiratory malignant tumors (tracheal, bronchial, and lung) in Mexico. We also evaluated the relationship between the burden of these neoplasms and the proportion of daily smokers and total lead emissions in 2019. A cross-sectional analysis of ecological data was performed. The burden of these tumors was 152,189 disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and years of life lost (YLL) contributed to 99% of them. The highest DALYs rates (per 100,000) were observed in the states of Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Baja Califor
