Subtyping stereotypic behavior in children: the association between stereotypic behavior, mood, and heart rate.

The stereotypic behavior of children (N = 26) while in a playroom session with their parent was studied. The sample included children with a pervasive developmental disorder, an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, a developmental expressive language disorder, or a developmental receptive language disorder and normally developing children. Stereotypic behaviors associated with distress, elation, and composure were compared on mean duration and form of the stereotypies and heart rate changes around the onset of the stereotypies. Results showed that stereotypies associated with different mo

Combat experience and postservice psychosocial status as predictors of suicide in Vietnam veterans.

The authors examined potential risk factors for suicide among 38 Vietnam veterans using 46 Vietnam veterans who died from motor vehicle accidents as a comparison group. The veterans were selected from Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's file (1977-1982). Data for these veterans were obtained from military service records, the coroner's reports, and the psychological autopsy conducted with the decedents' family members. No military service factor was associated with suicide. The characteristics of Vietnam veteran suicide cases were not substantially different from non-Vietnam veteran suicide

Emotional, behavioral, and cognitive status of children with cerebral gigantism.

Eleven children with cerebral gigantism or Sotos' syndrome were assessed regarding their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral status. The children demonstrated high rates of emotional and behavioral disorders, but no specific pattern or personality style was detected. On the cognitive assessments, all of the children presented with cognitive impairment or mental retardation, the range of which was variable. As with other syndromes associated with developmental delay, there was a wide range of expression of problems.

Mental Health and Well-Being Across the Eating Disorder Spectrum-From Milder Symptoms of Disordered Eating Behaviors to Diagnosed Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined differences in mental health and well-being, risk behaviors, suicidality, and social functioning across a proposed eating disorder (ED) spectrum, ranging from no ED symptoms to clinically diagnosed EDs. METHODS: We examined 44,303 participants in the 18-year follow-up in the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC-18) with cross-sectional data on self-reported ED symptoms and indicators of mental health and well-being. National register data was linked to identify hospital-diagnosed EDs. The ED spectrum comprised mutually exclusive categories ranging from no symptoms

Sleep Characteristics in Italian Children During Home Confinement Due to Covid-19 Outbreak.

OBJECTIVE: Italy faced one of the first large clusters of COVID-19 infections worldwide. Home confinement and social distancing could have negatively impacted sleep habits and prevalence of sleep disorders in children, which may be also linked with altered emotional processes. The present study focused on clinical aspects related to sleep, insomnia and emotions in Italian children aged 0-to-12 years during home confinement due to COVID-19 outbreak. METHOD: An online survey was systematically distributed in all Italian territories by contacting regional offices of the Italian Ministry of Instr

Event-related brain potentials, bilateral electrodermal activity and Mangina-Test performance in learning disabled/ADHD pre-adolescents with severe behavioral disorders as compared to age-matched normal controls.

The most frequently encountered developmental problems of learning disabilities/ADHD often co-exist with severe behavioral disorders. As a direct consequence, this condition opens the way to delinquency, school drop-out, depression, suicide, substance abuse, work absenteeism, and other psycho-social complications. In this paper, we are presenting a selective overview of our previous research and its clinical applications in this field as it relates to our present research data pertaining to the effects of our original Memory Workload Paradigm on the event-related brain potentials in differenti

Behavioral characteristics of toddlers later identified with an autism diagnosis, ADHD symptoms, or combined autism and ADHD symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Autism commonly co-occurs with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but less is known regarding how ADHD symptoms impact the early presentation of autism. This study examined early behavioral characteristics of a community sample of toddlers later identified with autism diagnosis, ADHD symptoms, combined autism and ADHD symptoms, or neither condition. METHODS: Participants were 506 toddlers who were part of a longitudinal study of children's behavioral development. Parents completed questionnaires about their children's behavior at two time points. Four groups were ide

Autism-linked mutations of CTTNBP2 reduce social interaction and impair dendritic spine formation via diverse mechanisms.

Abnormal synaptic formation and signaling is one of the key molecular features of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Cortactin binding protein 2 (CTTNBP2), an ASD-linked gene, is known to regulate the subcellular distribution of synaptic proteins, such as cortactin, thereby controlling dendritic spine formation and maintenance. However, it remains unclear how ASD-linked mutations of CTTNBP2 influence its function. Here, using cultured hippocampal neurons and knockin mouse models, we screen seven ASD-linked mutations in the short form of the Cttnbp2 gene and identify that M120I, R533* and D570Y m

Targeting separate specific learning parameters underlying cognitive behavioral therapy can improve perceptual judgments of anger.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anxiety disorders are characterized by biased perceptual judgment. An experimental model using simple verbal instruction to target specific decision parameters that influence perceptual judgment was developed to test if it could influence anger perception, and to examine differences between individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) relative to generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or non-psychiatric controls. METHODS: Anger perception was decomposed into three decision parameters (perceptual similarity of angry vs. not-angry facial expressions, base rate of encoun

Sociodemographic and substance use characteristics associated with typologies and composition of social support networks among youth experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, USA.

Youth experiencing homelessness are a vulnerable population with increased behavioural health risks. Social networks are a consistent correlate of youths' substance use behaviours. However, less is known about the reciprocal relationships among these constructs. This study classified youth experiencing homelessness according to their social support network type (e.g. instrumental, emotional, service) and composition (e.g. family, peers, service staff) and linked their membership in these social network classes to sociodemographic and substance use characteristics. Four waves of cross-sectional

Comprehension of insincere communication in neurodegenerative disease: lies, sarcasm, and theory of mind.

Comprehension of insincere communication is an important aspect of social cognition requiring visual perspective taking, emotion reading, and understanding others' thoughts, opinions, and intentions. Someone who is lying intends to hide their insincerity from the listener, while a sarcastic speaker wants the listener to recognize they are speaking insincerely. We investigated whether face-to-face testing of comprehending insincere communication would effectively discriminate among neurodegenerative disease patients with different patterns of real-life social deficits. We examined ability to co

'A place where I can be me': a role for social and leisure provision to support young people with language impairment.

BACKGROUND: The long-term well-being of children with language impairment is an area of increasing interest to families, educators and employers as language impairment is often life-long. Furthermore, language impairment and psychiatric difficulty are known to overlap in both populations originally diagnosed as having language impairment and those receiving mental health services. However, there are currently little data available about the wider quality of life for people with language impairment, especially from the perspective of the young people themselves. There is a dearth of information

Translation of an evidence-based social skills intervention for children with prenatal alcohol exposure in a community mental health setting.

BACKGROUND: Children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have significant social skills deficits and are often treated in community mental health settings. However, it remains unclear whether these children can be effectively treated using manualized, evidence-based interventions that have been designed for more general mental health populations. METHODS: To shed light on this issue, the effectiveness of Children's Friendship Training (CFT) versus Standard of Care (SOC) was assessed for 85 children ages 6 to 12 years with and without PAE in a community mental health center. RESULTS: Childre

Training implicit social anxiety associations: an experimental intervention.

The current study investigates an experimental anxiety reduction intervention among a highly socially anxious sample (N=108; n=36 per Condition; 80 women). Using a conditioning paradigm, our goal was to modify implicit social anxiety associations to directly test the premise from cognitive models that biased cognitive processing may be causally related to anxious responding. Participants were trained to preferentially process non-threatening information through repeated pairings of self-relevant stimuli and faces indicating positive social feedback. As expected, participants in this positive t

The prediction of outcome in chronic schizophrenia. IV. The Chestnut Lodge follow-up study.

Predictors of long-term outcome were identified among a sample (n = 163) of largely chronic DSM-III schizophrenic patients (80% ill for more than two years) from the Chestnut Lodge follow-up study using three methods of analysis (correlation, multiple regression, and discriminant function). Predictors accounted for approximately one third of the outcome variance across six outcome dimensions. The following variables regularly (ie, individually and as components in multivariate equations) predicted better global outcome: less family history of schizophrenia, better premorbid instrumental functi

Dopaminergic modulation of social reward anticipation in depression: neural effects of amisulpride versus placebo.

Reward processing deficits are a well-established mechanism underlying anhedonia, a core symptom of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Given the role of dopamine in mesocorticolimbic reward pathways, this study examined whether a single low dose of amisulpride (100 mg), which is thought to enhance dopaminergic transmission through presynaptic D2/3 autoreceptor blockade, modulates brain activation during the anticipation of social rewards. A total of 58 participants with MDD and 57 healthy controls (HCs) participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial. They received either am

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of the Temporoparietal Junction in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Results of a Phase-IIa Randomized, Double-Blind, Sham-Controlled Feasibility Study.

Activation of the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is reduced in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during social cognitive tasks. Therefore, anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the TPJ may enhance social cognitive abilities in autistic individuals. In a multicenter, randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind parallel-group Phase-IIa trial, we investigated feasibility, safety, and effect sizes of 10 sessions of anodal tDCS of the bilateral TPJ at 2 mA as an add-on to computer-based social cognitive training in 10- to 17-year-old youth with autism. Feasibility of recruitment was l

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorders using a double deep Q-Network framework based on social media footprints.

INTRODUCTION: Social media is increasingly used in many contexts within the healthcare sector. The improved prevalence of Internet use via computers or mobile devices presents an opportunity for social media to serve as a tool for the rapid and direct distribution of essential health information. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a comprehensive neurodevelopmental syndrome with enduring effects. Twitter has become a platform for the ASD community, offering substantial assistance to its members by disseminating information on their beliefs and perspectives via language and emotional expressio
