Features and networks of the mandible on computed tomography.

The mandible or lower jaw is the largest and hardest bone in the human facial skeleton. Fractures of the mandible are reported to be a common facial trauma in emergency medicine and gaining insights into mandibular morphology in different facial types can be helpful for trauma treatment. Furthermore, features of the mandible play an important role in forensics and anthropology for identifying gender and individuals. Thus, discovering hidden information of the mandible can benefit interdisciplinary research. Here, for the first time, a method of artificial intelligence-based nonlinear dynamics

Deforestation impacts on dengue incidence in the Brazilian Amazon.

The objective of the study is to perform the spatial analysis of the conditioning factors for the increase in the incidence rate of dengue cases in municipalities located in the Amazon biome, in the period from 2016 to 2021. Three statistical approaches were applied: Moran's index, ordinary least squares regression, and geographically weighted regression. The results revealed that the incidence rates of dengue cases cluster in two areas, both located in the south of the Amazon biome, which is associated with the Arc of Deforestation. The variable deforestation influences the increase in dengue

A tactile sensor using single layer graphene for surface texture recognition.

Tactile sensors capable of texture recognition are essential for artificial skin functions. In this work, we describe a tactile sensor with a single sensor architecture made of single layer graphene that can recognize surface texture based on the roughness of the interacting surface. Resistance changes due to the local deformation of a local area of the single layer graphene are reflected in the resistance of the entire sensor. By introducing microstructures inspired by human finger prints, surface texture was successfully defined through fast Fourier transform analysis, and spatial resolution

Accuracy evaluation of the Kinect v2 sensor during dynamic movements in a rehabilitation scenario.

In this paper, the accuracy evaluation of the Kinect v2 sensor is investigated in a rehabilitation scenario. The accuracy analysis is provided in terms of joint positions and angles during dynamic postures used in low-back pain rehabilitation. Although other studies have focused on the validation of the accuracy in terms of joint angles and positions, they present results only considering static postures whereas the rehabilitation exercise monitoring involves to consider dynamic movements with a wide range of motion and issues related to the joints tracking. In this work, joint positions and a

New technological and clinical trends in blood pressure theranostics: is it time to consider a spatio-temporal approach?

Blood pressure (BP) is traditionally assessed, for centuries, at the brachial artery by cuff-based sphygmomanometric techniques. Technological and methodological innovations as well as emerging new findings from clinical studies and trials now provoke a re-consideration of traditional strategies for BP management. The existing knowledge regarding the occurring changes of BP over time (temporal variability) and the evident differences of BP levels between central and peripheral arteries (spatial variability) now pilots the progress in current therapeutic and diagnostic ("theranostic") concepts

Spatial measurement of mobility barriers: improving the environment of community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan.

Mobility barriers can impede physical activity, increase the fear of falling, and pose a threat to the ability of older adults to live independently. This study investigated outdoor mobility barriers within a nonretirement public housing community located in Tainan, Taiwan. Site observations and interviews with older adult residents determined that parked motor scooters, potted plants, the rubber tiles of play areas, and a set of steps were the most important barriers. In addition, the space syntax parameters of control value and mean depth were effectively able to quantitatively measure impro

"The Glasgow effect?"- the result of the geographical patterning of deprived areas?

The aim of this research was to examine whether the excess mortality found in Glasgow, compared to other cities in the UK ("Glasgow effect"), could be attributed to patterns of the distribution of deprived neighbourhoods within the cities. Data on mortality and deprivation at a neighbourhood scale were used to examine the impact of the patterning of neighbourhood deprivation on mortality in Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester. Analysis using a combination of GIS and statistical approaches, including a Moran׳s I test and Conditional Auto Regressive models to capture residual spatial autocorrelati

Heart sound segmentation of pediatric auscultations using wavelet analysis.

Auscultation is widely applied in clinical activity, nonetheless sound interpretation is dependent on clinician training and experience. Heart sound features such as spatial loudness, relative amplitude, murmurs, and localization of each component may be indicative of pathology. In this study we propose a segmentation algorithm to extract heart sound components (S1 and S2) based on it's time and frequency characteristics. This algorithm takes advantage of the knowledge of the heart cycle times (systolic and diastolic periods) and of the spectral characteristics of each component, through wavel

Mapping dynamic branch displacements: a versatile method to quantify spatiotemporal neurite dynamics.

Quantification of the movement of axons and dendrites is essential for the study of circuit formation. Several methods have been developed to quantify the movement of neurites in simplified systems; however, these quantification methods are specialized for a limited type of predicted movements in each assay system. The movement of neurites in vivo includes many unexpected rearrangements. Establishment of a method that can detect and quantify a variety of patterning events will reveal novel phenomena in circuit formation and make it possible to conduct deeper investigation of the molecular and

Characterizing atypical patterns of Heart Rate before Paroxysmal Ventricular Tachycardia.

Results of a comparative analysis between Heart Rate (HR) patterns occurring before the onset of Paroxysmal Ventricular Tachycardia (PVT) and from healthy subjects are shown. Two study groups were made after electrocardiographic dynamical monitoring (Holter) of volunteers. The first group includes 100h from 27 healthy control subjects, and the second group consists of 88h, ending with self-terminating episodes of PVT from 55 patients. Patterns are defined as sequences of consecutive RR intervals, while atypical patterns are defined as corresponding to unlikely behavior of Heart Rate in healthy

Analytic solution of neural network with disordered lateral inhibition.

The replica method has played a key role in analyzing systems with disorder, e.g., the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, and associative neural networks. Here we study the influence of disorder in the lateral inhibition type interactions on the cooperative and uncooperative behavior of recurrent neural networks by using the replica method. Although the interaction between neurons has a dependency on distance, our model can be solved analytically. Bifurcation analysis identifies the boundaries between paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, spin-glass, and localized phases. In the localized phase, the n

Combinatorial decomposition of an outbreak signature.

We use mathematically rigorous definitions of epidemiological concepts in order to derive a sequential combinatorial model of disease outbreak decomposition. We define the idea of a population specific 'disease signature' and use this in order to decompose and further understand outbreaks as incidents of spatial and temporal spread of disease exposure both in, and across, populations. This allows us to differentiate between different disease spread scenarios with a level of sensitivity that previous models were unable to provide. This perspective leads us to propose a new practical definition

Interlimb coupling in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy during reaching and grasping at speed.

This investigation examined reaching and grasping at speed in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Of particular interest was the effect of the movement of the less affected limb on the more affected one. Using 3D kinematic analysis and standard video recordings, 11 children with hemiplegia of varying degrees of severity were examined performing three reaching tasks at speed. The data were analysed and the extent and nature of the interlimb coupling occurring in each child were assessed using a number of different variables. The results are discussed in terms of spatial, temporal, and post

Localization of calcitonin gene-related peptide mRNA in developing olfactory axons.

During development of the olfactory pathway, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) expression is regulated both temporally and spatially. We had previous evidence that between E13 and E19 CGRP mRNA was present at the level of olfactory axons but the resolution of light-microscope in situ hybridization did not permit the axons to be distinguished from the closely apposed ensheathing cells. In this study, the localization of CGRP mRNA was studied at early developmental stages (E13-15) through in situ hybridization at the transmission electron-microscope (TEM) level. CGRP transcripts were observ

The sidekick gene, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, is required for pattern formation in the Drosophila eye.

In the Drosophila eye imaginal disc the photoreceptor cells (R cells) differentiate according to a precise spatial and temporal order. The sidekick (sdk) gene is necessary to prevent extra R cells from differentiating during eye disc development. The extra cell appears between R3 and R4 early in R cell clusters and is most likely the result of the mystery cell inappropriately differentiating as an R cell. Mosaic analysis shows that sdk is required neither in the R cells nor in the extra cell, suggesting that sdk is necessary in the surrounding undifferentiated cells. The sdk gene codes for a p

The influence of military low-altitude flight noise on the inner ear of the guinea pig. Part II: Scanning electron micrographs.

Guinea pigs were exposed once to MLAF noise (126 dB(A), 75 dB/s) and 12 cochleae were prepared for scanning electron microscopy 2 to 3 weeks after exposure. Qualitative analysis of the cilia of the outer hair cells revealed the types of damage already described in literature. The spatial distribution of cilia damage, however, differed essentially from the well known pattern: the damage was more or less pancochlear, beginning in the basal turn and increasing in frequency and severeness of damage till the end of the third turn. The most severe damage was visible in the outer row of the outer hai

Multiple component agraphia in a patient with atypical cerebral dominance: an error analysis.

A 52-year-old man with atypical cerebral dominance (left-handed for writing but mixed handedness for other tasks) suffered an extensive right hemisphere stroke, resulting in a combination of deficits that has not been previously reported. There were profound visual constructive and visual perceptual disturbances and a spatial agraphia, which were consistent with a nondominant hemisphere lesion. There was also a severe apraxic agraphia, which is typically associated with a dominant hemisphere lesion, but no other signs of dominant hemisphere dysfunction such as linguistic disturbance or limb-mo

Localized hydrogel depots for CAR-T cell therapy in solid tumors: materials design, cellular fitness and translational deployment.

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy is less effective in solid tumors than in selected hematologic malignancies because vascular, stromal, spatial, and immunosuppressive barriers restrict cell delivery and function. Local hydrogels and related biomaterials can convert a transient administration into a spatially organized depot, but their benefit depends on more than polymer identity. This review therefore combines a scenario-driven framework-depot versus bolus, intratumoral versus peritumoral placement, unresected versus postsurgical disease, and cell-loaded versus cell-free suppo
