Predicting PTSD in women with a history of childhood rape.

The impact of factors that predispose childhood rape victims to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is important in understanding both the impact of childhood rape and the development of PTSD as a psychological disorder. The present study attempted to determine which crime, perpetrator, victim, and aftermath characteristics are related to PTSD status. A national representative sample of women (N = 3,220) were interviewed about their history of rape, trauma-related variables, and PTSD status. Consistent with research on crime victims, life threat and physical injury discriminated PTSD

Posttraumatic stress disorder after sexual assault: its psychodynamics and treatment.

Sexual assault as a major psychological trauma and a crime of violence evokes immediate symptoms of posttraumatic stress and, for many victims, long-term posttraumatic psychological sequelae. The victim, as the recipient of the rapist's anger and need to control, experiences terror, fear of death, and helplessness. This results in classic posttraumatic symptoms of haunting, intrusive recollections, numbing or constriction of feelings and focus, and increased arousal. When this psychological trauma is not integrated, anxiety, depression, phobias, impaired sexual and social adjustment, negative

Visualizing the Neurobiology of Trauma: Design and evaluation of an eLearning module for continuing professional development of family physicians in the Online Psychiatric Education Network.

Traumatic experiences can change brain structures and compromise emotional, cognitive, and bodily functions, thereby debilitating patients. Yet, trauma is not well understood by physicians and few educational resources are available, despite its prevalence. The goal of this design research project is to develop and evaluate 2D animations in a case-based eLearning module. Complexities of post-traumatic stress disorder, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, are difficult to teach, talk about, and visually portray. Results of this study elucidate effective design dimensions of graphic

Practical assessment and evaluation of mental health problems following a mass disaster.

Almost all individuals who experience a severe trauma will develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) shortly after the traumatic event. Although the natural history of PTSD varies according to the type of trauma, most people do not develop enduring PTSD, and, in many of those who do, it resolves within 1 year without treatment. To the extent that is possible, maintenance of normal daily activities is believed to help patients cope more successfully in the aftermath of major trauma. In the case of a disaster such as the Asian tsunami, the whole community is involved, and it is im

Self-compassion as a mediator of attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, and complex PTSD in college students with adverse childhood experiences.

Given the significant prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their detrimental impact on mental health, this study examines the relationship between attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) among college students with ACEs, emphasizing the mediating role of self-compassion (SC). A sample of 32,388 students from Kunming, China completed a survey including the Revised Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACEQ-R), the Adult Attachment Scale (AAS), the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ), and the Self-Compassion Scale

Factor validation of the International Trauma Questionnaire in a sample of trauma-exposed Colombian adults in the MI-VIDA study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: The ICD-11 introduced a new diagnosis of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) defined by disturbances in self-organisation in addition to traditional post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. The International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) is the established measure of this construct and has been validated for use in a variety of populations and languages; however, evidence for the measure's use in Latin America is limited. AIMS: This study sought to validate the factor structure of the Latin American Spanish version of the ITQ in a trauma-exposed sample in Colombia. METHOD

Dynamic Psychotherapy as a PTSD Treatment for Firefighters: A Case Study.

In Portugal, forest fires are responsible for disasters that tend to be repeated annually, leading to dramatic consequences, such as those that have occurred in 2017, with the destruction of hundreds of houses and the deaths of dozens of people. Firefighters who are exposed to these potentially traumatic events are considered a high-risk group for the development of stress-related disorders. The aim of this study was to monitor the progress of two firefighters with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treated through dynamic psychotherapy (DP) and to assess the feasibility of impl

EEG-based emotion recognition using hybrid CNN and LSTM classification.

Emotions are a mental state that is accompanied by a distinct physiologic rhythm, as well as physical, behavioral, and mental changes. In the latest days, physiological activity has been used to study emotional reactions. This study describes the electroencephalography (EEG) signals, the brain wave pattern, and emotion analysis all of these are interrelated and based on the consequences of human behavior and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Post-traumatic stress disorder effects for long-term illness are associated with considerable suffering, impairment, and social/emotional impairment.

Metabolic and endocrine dysfunctions in traumatic brain injury: Implications for cognitive recovery and therapeutic strategies.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) triggers a chain reaction of intricate metabolic abnormalities, sometimes leading to ongoing cognitive deficits. These abnormalities comprise dysregulation in trace element homeostasis, disrupted neurotransmitter modulation, increased lipid peroxidation, compromised glucose metabolism, and organ-specific metabolic changes. Most recent studies suggest that metabolic abnormalities are the root cause of cognitive decline in post-traumatic stress disorder. Restoring metabolic balance through therapeutic modalities, such as antioxidant therapy to combat lipid peroxidati

Impact of TBI, PTSD, and Hearing Loss on Tinnitus Progression in a US Marine Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Mild TBI (TBI) is associated with up to a 75.7% incidence of tinnitus, and 33.0% of tinnitus patients at the US Veterans Administration carry a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). Yet factors contributing to new onset or exacerbation of tinnitus remain unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here we measure intermittent and constant tinnitus at two time points to ascertain whether pre-existing or co-occurring traumatic brain injury (TBI), hearing loss, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) predicts new onset, lack of recovery and/or worsening of tinnitus in 2,600 Unit

Continuous remote vital sign/environment monitoring for returning soldier adjustment assessment.

A three-stage study to develop and test an unobtrusive room sensor unit and subject data management system to discover correlation between sensor-based time-series measurements of sleep quality and clinical assessments of combat veterans suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), is described. Experiments and results for testing sensitivity and robustness of the sensor unit and data management protocol are provided. The current sensitivity of remote vital sign monitoring system is below 20% and 10% for respiration and heart rates, respectively.

Effects of Expressive Writing on Psychosocial Symptoms and Quality of Life in Patients With Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION: Breast cancer (BC) affects women's physical and psychological well-being. Expressive writing (EW) interventions show promise for BC symptoms but have inconclusive impacts on quality of life (QOL). This review evaluated the effect of EW interventions in patients with BC on QOL, intrusive thoughts, benefit finding, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, anxiety, and depression. LITERATURE SEARCH: Seven English and two Chinese databases were searched for articles published through August 2023. Two researchers reviewed studies, extracted data, and evaluated risk of bias.

Clinical case series: the use of Prazosin for combat-related recurrent nightmares among Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Increased central nervous system norepinephrine outflow and alpha1-adrenergic receptor responsiveness appear to be involved in the pathophysiologic processes of trauma-related nightmares in post-traumatic stress disorder. On the basis of reports that the brain-accessible alpha1-adrenergic antagonist Prazosin substantially reduced chronic combat-related nightmares among Vietnam War veterans, we evaluated Prazosin effects on combat-related nightmares among combat soldiers returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom. METHODS: Twenty-eight soldiers who self-reported distressing combat traum

Patient Attribution of Posttraumatic Symptoms to Brain Injury Versus PTSD in Military-Related Mild TBI.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent cognitive, somatic, and neuropsychiatric symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) are influenced by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly in military patients. The authors evaluated the degree to which military service members with a history of mild TBI attributed posttraumatic symptoms to TBI versus PTSD. METHODS: Service members (N=372) with mild TBI were surveyed about the severity of posttraumatic symptoms across four symptom clusters (cognitive, affective, somatosensory, and vestibular) with the Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI).
