Children and adolescents with developmental disorders exhibit a wide range of self-destructive behaviors. Interestingly, suicidal ideation and gestures have been underreported in this population. This study was designed to examine suicidality in a clinically referred sample. The medical records of all individuals assessed in a specialized program during a 1-year period were reviewed looking at the incidence, the type and the clinical characteristics of any suicidal behavior. Forty-seven patients (20%) experienced either suicidal ideation, threats, or attempts with hanging being the most freque

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic neck pain is common, representing a substantial human and societal burden. About 15%-25% of individuals involved in an accident causing whiplash continue to experience moderate-to-severe symptoms and functional impairment 1 year post-trauma. Factors such as age, high pain intensity, hypersensitivity to pain and early post-traumatic hyperarousal are associated with persistent neck pain. However, multiple questions remain unanswered regarding how best to improve early care. As such, research on recovery patterns (including indicators for health economic burden) and t

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established risk factors for mental disorders, yet their impact within vulnerable occupational groups remains insufficiently understood. Women engaged in sex work and social care are disproportionately exposed to violence and emotional stressors, potentially compounding the effects of early-life adversity.
METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study in Berlin, Germany, including 560 women (403 engaged in sex work, 157 in social care). Childhood adversity was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF), and current psyc

The neurosteroid allopregnanolone (3α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one; AP) elicits pleiotropic effects in the central nervous system, ranging from neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory functions to the regulation of mood and emotional responses. Several lines of research show that the brain rapidly produces AP in response to acute stress to reduce the allostatic load and enhance coping. These effects not only are likely mediated by GABAA receptor activation but also result from the contributions of other mechanisms, such as the stimulation of membrane progesterone receptors. In keeping with this evi

UNLABELLED: Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP) is a neuropeptide that plays a key role in the neurobiology of the stress response, and prior studies suggest that its function is dysregulated in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS) acts through PACAP and other neurobiological systems to modulate stress responses and/or symptoms of PTSD. In this pilot study, we examined the effects of tcVNS on PACAP in a three day chronic stress laboratory paradigm involving serial traumatic and mental stress exposures in healthy indiv

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by negative affective symptoms, including anxiety, depression, anhedonia, and fear. The molecular mechanisms underlying these symptoms remain poorly understood. Phosphodiesterase 2A (PDE2A), a regulator of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling, has been implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the role of the PDE2A-cAMP-protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway in negative emotional behaviors induced by traumatic stress.
METHODS: Transcriptomic datasets were analyzed to ide

The changes in the modern work environment are accompanied by specific stressors that can have a negative impact on employees' mental health. In line with this, the proportion of sick-leave days due to mental disorders has recently risen to 17.7% compared to 10.9% in 2007, which in 2021 was associated with costs of 42.9 billion euros due to losses of gross value and productivity.Based on current health economic studies, this review provides an overview of the economic impact of incapacity to work and early retirement due to various mental disorders in Germany. In absolute figures, expenditure

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental disorders are considered a leading complication of childbirth and a common contributor to maternal death. In addition to undermining maternal welfare, untreated postpartum psychopathology can result in child emotional and physical neglect and associated significant pediatric health costs. Some women may experience traumatic childbirth and develop posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms after delivery (childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder). Although women are routinely screened for postpartum depression in the United States, there is no recommended protoco

The mental health of children and adolescents is a critical concern, as a significant proportion of internalizing disorders emerge early in life, highlighting the importance of timely identification and intervention. However, recent data on the prevalence and comorbidity of these disorders among Spanish youth remain scarce. This study aims to examine the estimated rates and comorbidity patterns of internalizing symptoms -including depression, generalized (GAD) and social anxiety, somatic complaints, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and eating behavior

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) rarely occurs alone but is typically accompanied by comorbid psychiatric disorders, which complicates the clinical presentation and treatment of affected youths. The aim of this study was to investigate sex differences in comorbidity pattern in CD and to systematically explore the 'gender paradox' and 'delayed-onset pathway' hypotheses of female CD.
METHODS: As part of the FemNAT-CD multisite study, semistructured clinical interviews and rating scales were used to perform a comprehensive phenotypic characterization of 454 girls and 295 boys with CD (9-18 year

Recent research suggests that sleep disturbance may be a transdiagnostic process, and there is increasing interest in examining how sleep disturbance may contribute to anxiety and related disorders. The current review summarizes and synthesizes the extant research assessing sleep in anxiety and related disorders. The findings suggest that sleep disturbance exacerbates symptom severity in the majority of anxiety and related disorders. However, the nature of sleep disturbance often varies as a function of objective versus subjective assessment. Although sleep disturbance is a correlate of most a

Mood disorders in general, and bipolar disorder in particular, are unique among the psychiatric conditions in that they are associated with extraordinarily high rates of comorbidity with a multitude of psychiatric and medical conditions. Among all the potential comorbidities, co-occurring anxiety disorders stand out due to their very high prevalence. Outcome in bipolar illness is worse in the presence of a comorbid anxiety disorder. The coexistence of an anxiety disorder presents a particularly difficult challenge in the treatment of bipolar illness since antidepressants, the mainstay of pharm

Family members caring for individuals with Alzheimers disease (AD) often experience significant psychological distress, which can lead to mental health issues such as severe depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety. We conducted a study to explore the experiences of 18 primary caregivers of AD patients through semi-structured in-depth interviews. The study identified four key stages of post-traumatic growth (PTG): i) the pain period, ii) the struggle period, iii) the recovery period, and iv) the period of positive growth. Additionally, factors that contribute to PTG among caregi

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are signature injuries of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and have been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias. A meeting hosted by the Alzheimer's Association and the Veterans' Health Research Institute (NCIRE) in May 2012 brought together experts from the U.S. military and academic medical centers around the world to discuss current evidence and hypotheses regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms linking TBI, PTSD, and AD. Studies underway in civilian and military populations were

This study was aimed at identifying factors that determine the psychosocial effects severity of child sexual abuse. Data were collected from 318 female children in Ethiopia using the Children's Impact of Traumatic Events Scale-Revised and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The results revealed that respondents who survived rape and child prostitution were more symptomatic than those who were married early. Respondents for whom less time had elapsed since their first experience of abuse demonstrated a significantly higher level of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, negative reactions by oth

Homeless youth experience disproportionately high rates of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study examined correlates of trauma and PTSD among homeless youth with a focus on the impact of homeless culture, substance addiction, and mental health challenges. Homeless youth (N = 146) from Los Angeles, California, Denver, Colorado, and St. Louis, Missouri, were recruited from organizations providing services to homeless youth using comparable methods. Results indicate that 57% of respondents had experienced a traumatic event and 24% met criteria for PTSD. A multinomial logisti

We assessed perceptions of vulnerability and the desire for personal safety/self-defense (PS/SD) training among 67 female veterans receiving outpatient mental health treatment, primarily for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from sexual and/or physical trauma. Consistent with the literature on the impact of such training on nonclinical populations and on individuals with visual impairments, the results of this study indicate that traumatized female veterans believe that PS/SD training would be an effective and powerful addition to more traditional treatments for PTSD. Study participants in

Childhood maltreatment is associated with psychopathology and revictimization in adulthood. Whether different types of childhood maltreatment have different long-term consequences, however, is largely unknown. The participants in this study included 42 female victims of intimate partner violence and 30 women with no history of serious trauma. These women completed measures of their trauma history, current psychological symptoms, and severity of current abuse. Regression-based techniques were used to assess the relationships among these constructs. Childhood maltreatment was associated with cur
