[Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC) Expert consensus document: Post-acute cardiovascular sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection].

Although the clinical course of COVID-19 in its acute phase is now delineated, less known is its late phase characterized by a heterogeneous series of sequelae affecting various organs and systems, including the cardiovascular system, which continue after the acute episode or arise after their resolution. This syndrome, now referred with the new acronym "PASC" (post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection) has been formally recognized by various scientific societies and international organizations that have proposed various definitions. The World Health Organization defines PASC, distinguishing

QTC-4-MeOBnE Ameliorated Depressive-Like Behavior and Memory Impairment in 3xTg Mice.

Growing evidence has associated major depressive disorder (MDD) as a risk factor or prodromal syndrome for the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although this dilemma remains open, it is widely shown that a lifetime history of MDD is correlated with faster progression of AD pathology. Therefore, antidepressant drugs with neuroprotective effects could be an interesting therapeutic conception to target this issue simultaneously. In this sense, 1-(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl)-N-(4-methoxybenzyl)-5-methyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4- carboxamide (QTC-4-MeOBnE) was initially conceived as a multi-target lig

Analysis of Caenorhabditis elegans acetylcholine synthesis mutants reveals a temperature-sensitive requirement for cholinergic neuromuscular function.

In Caenorhabditis elegans, the cha-1 gene encodes choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), the enzyme that synthesizes the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. We have analyzed a large number of cha-1 hypomorphic mutants, most of which are missense alleles. Some homozygous cha-1 mutants have approximately normal ChAT immunoreactivity; many other alleles lead to consistent reductions in synaptic immunostaining, although the residual protein appears to be stable. Regardless of protein levels, neuromuscular function of almost all mutants is temperature-sensitive, i.e., neuromuscular function is worse at 25°

Caesarean section and offspring's emotional development: Sex differences and the role of key neurotransmitters.

Increasing caesarean section (CS) rates are of global concern not only for health care providers but also from a more general public health point of view. Growing concern on the association between CS and offspring's neurodevelopmental outcomes have been raised in recent years, but the effect of CS on offspring's emotional development is rarely reported. By using mice models, we have set up two groups, ie. offspring born via CS and in-fostered by dams with vaginal delivery (VD), and offspring born via VD and in-fostered by their non-biological mothers. Depression-like behavioral was evaluated

Involvement of 5-HT-BDNF signaling axis in mediating synergistic antidepressant-like effects after combined administration of two oligosaccharide esters.

Potential mechanisms of depression involving herbal medicines and their specific compounds include elevated 5-HT level and downstream BDNF pathway. To identify potentially new combined therapeutic strategies, 3,6'-disinapoylsucrose (DISS) and tenuifoliside A (TFSA) have been observed to show antidepressant-like effects and its related 5-HT-BDNF pathway. We have tried to investigate whether combined administration of DISS and TFSA exerted more effective in the treatment of depression, as assessed through tail suspension test (TST) and forced swimming test (FST). In addition, we also analyzed th

Prenatal exercise reprograms the development of hypertension progress and improves vascular health in SHR offspring.

BACKGROUND: Upregulation of L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ (CaV1.2) channel in the arterial myocytes is a hallmark feature of hypertension. However, whether maternal exercise during pregnancy has a sustained beneficial effect on the offspring of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) through epigenetic regulation of CaV1.2 channel is largely unknown. METHODS: Pregnant SHRs and Wistar-Kyoto rats were subjected to swimming and the vascular molecular and functional properties of male offspring were evaluated at embryonic (E) 20.5 day, 3 months (3 M), and 6 months (6 M). RESULTS: Exercise during preg

Floor vibrations for motivation and feedback in the rat vibration actuating search task.

Motivating rodents to perform cognitive tasks often relies on the application of aversive stimuli. The Vibration Actuating Search Task (VAST) is a novel open-field task in which gradient floor vibration provides motivation for the rodent to navigate in the direction of diminishing vibration to an unmarked target destination. Using floor vibration as a motivational stimulus may overcome several of the potential confounds associated with stimuli used in other tasks. In a series of three experiments, we determined whether (1) rats exhibit place preference for floor vibration over other aversive s

Aversive Learning Deficits and Depressive-Like Behaviors Are Accompanied by an Increase in Oxidative Stress in a Rat Model of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: The Protective Effect of Rapamycin.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are one of the most common consequences of ethanol exposure during pregnancy. In adulthood, these disorders can be manifested by learning and memory deficits and depressive-like behavior. Ethanol-induced oxidative stress may be one of the factors that induces FASD development. The mammalian target of the Rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway that acts via two distinct multiprotein complexes, mTORC1 and mTORC2, can affect oxidative stress. We investigated whether mTOR-dependent or mTOR-independent mechanisms are engaged in this phenomenon. Thus, Rapamycin-a

Escherichia coli and Serratia fonticola ESBLs as a potential source of antibiotics resistance dissemination in the Tricity water reservoirs.

Despite the fact that cephalosporins are rarely used in medical or veterinary treatment, the presence of Enterobacterales strains resistant to this group of anti-bacterial drugs (ESBL) is an important issue that requires attention. Between 2019 and 2021, 14 retention reservoirs, 12 streams, 3 rivers and 1 lake situated in the Tricity area (in northern Poland) were sampled for the presence of ESBL strains. Out of 40 water samples, characteristic growth (E. coli and the KESC group) on Chromagar ESBL plates was observed for 33 samples. The average number of ESBL E. coli was 42±132 CFU/100 ml, whi

Flavonoids ameliorate aluminum chloride-induced learning and memory impairments via suppression of apoptosis and oxidative stress in rats.

The study was to investigate the effects of flavonoids (rutin, puerarin, and silymarin) on learning and memory function in rats exposed to aluminum chloride (AlCl3). Wistar rats were administered flavonoids at a dose of 100 mg/(kg·bw)/day or 200 mg/(kg·bw)/day after exposed to 281.40 mg/(kg·bw)/day AlCl3·6H2O. The results of Morris water maze suggested that rutin and puerarin increased the frequency of crossing the platform and swimming time spent in the target quadrant of AlCl3-induced rats significantly. Chronic stress decreases ornithine decarboxylase expression and protects against 1,2-dimethylhydrazine-induced colon carcinogenesis.

Biological response to stress depends on the type, timing, and severity of the stressor. Acute stressful environments may positively activate molecular and cellular mechanisms to favor adaptation; however, chronic stress is often associated with detrimental health effects. Colon cancer (CC) is one of the leading causes of death associated with cancer and has been mentioned as a stress-related disease. In the present work, the effect of chronic stress on the initial phase of CC was evaluated, and special emphasis was placed on ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) expression and polyamines for their ro
