A 42-year-old man with undiagnosed Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) developed bilateral central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). His medical history included bronchial asthma and irregular prednisolone usage but no atherosclerotic risk factors. At presentation, visual acuity (VA) was hand motion in the right eye and counting fingers in left eye. On fundoscopy, retinal whitening and a cherry red spot were observed in the right eye, while the fundus was normal in the left eye. After eyeball massage and systemic intraocular pressure lowering agents, his VA improved. On day 5 of treatment, he experien

Scrub typhus is a fatal zoonotic disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. This disease is accompanied by systemic vasculitis, lymphadenopathy, headache, myalgia, and eschar. In recent studies, a novel strain that is resistant to current medical treatment was identified in Thailand. Thus, the development of new specific drugs for scrub typhus is needed. However, the exact molecular mechanism governing the progression of scrub typhus has not been fully elucidated. To understand disease-related genetic factors and mechanisms associated with the progression of scrub typhus, we performed a genome-

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a self-limiting acute systemic vasculitis occur mainly in infants and young children under 5 years old. Although the use of acetylsalicylic acid (AAS) in combination with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) remains the standard therapy to KD, the etiology, genetic susceptibility genes and pathogenic factors of KD are still un-elucidated.
PURPOSE: Current obstacles in the treatment of KD include the lack of standard clinical and genetic markers for early diagnosis, possible severe side effect of AAS (Reye's syndrome), and the refractory KD cases with resistan

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multi-systemic vasculitis with a considerable prevalence in Asian countries. There are many genes associated with a higher risk of developing BD, one of which is endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase-1 (ERAP1). In this study, we aimed to investigate the interactions of ERAP1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using a novel data mining method called Model-based multifactor dimensionality reduction (MB-MDR).
METHODS: We have included 748 BD patients and 776 healthy controls. A peripheral blood sample was collected, and eleven SNPs were assessed.

Coronary artery aneurysms (CAA) are an infrequent cause of coronary artery disease in both systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), most occurring as a result of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Until now, no cases of CAA have been described in a patient with rhupus syndrome (RhS). Differentiating whether CAA stem from primary vasculitis, atherosclerosis, or a combination of both continues to pose a significant challenge. We present the first described clinical case of a 43-year-old patient with RhS and multiple CAA identified by the presentation of an acute myocardial

ANCA-associated RPGN leads to renal failure through systemic vasculitis and diffuse crescentic glomerulonephritis. MPO-ANCA-RPGN patients are highly susceptible to infections. Our aim in this study was to uncover reasons why these patients were susceptible to infections. We analyzed various aspects of type I interferon system including HVJ-stimulated IFN-α producing capacity and plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC) number in whole blood in MPO-ANCA-RPGN patients. Compared with healthy subjects, MPO-ANCA-RPGN patients showed impaired HVJ-stimulated IFN-α producing capacity and lower pDC number wit

OBJECTIVE: To formulate practice guidelines on diagnosis and management of Kawasaki disease (KD) for Indian children.
JUSTIFICATION: KD is a systemic vasculitis that predominantly affects infants and children less than 5 years of age. Coronary artery abnormalities (CAA) develop in around 15-25% of untreated children with KD. Coronary artery involvement can lead to long-term cardiovascular implications such as development of premature coronary artery disease. Diagnosis of KD is essentially clinical based on recognition of a constellation of characteristic symptoms and signs. Timely diagnosis a

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a primary granulomatous systemic vasculitis involving the aorta and its main branches that affects people aged over 50 years with a genetic predisposition. Its main phenotypes are cranial and extracranial involvement, with or without symptoms of polymyalgia rheumatica. These phenotypes can overlap. The extracranial form can be oligosymptomatic and must be sought directly. The main complications of the disease are ischemia of essential territories such as the optic nerve or cerebral circulation, and aneurysmal dilations of the aorta and its large branches. Clinicia

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangitis (EGPA) is a systemic necrotizing small-vessel vasculitis that presents heterogeneously as a multi-organ disease. EGPA evolves through three phases: (1) prodromic phase with asthma, atopy and sinusitis, (2) eosinophilic phase characterized by peripheral eosinophilia and eosinophilic infiltration without necrosis, and (3) vasculitic phase involving organ damage. EGPA often presents with asthma, mononeuritis multiplex, lung infiltrates, sinusitis and constitutional symptoms. Although myalgias are common, EGPA rarely presents with true weakness with ele

Behçet's disease is a systemic vasculitis characterized by attacks of acute inflammation, which can affect almost every vascularized area of the body. There is a close correlation between the geographical distribution of HLA-B51 and its prevalence. In the etiopathogenesis there are indications of genetic susceptibility associated with environmental influence. Among the involved genes are those that encompass innate and adaptive immunities. Polymorphisms and epistatic interactions in several genes are described, as well as the presence of imbalance lineage between HLA-B51 and A (MICA). Herpes s

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease is a vasculitis, seen more frequently around the Mediterranean and the Far East, and evinces with oral and genital ulcerations, skin lesions and uveitis. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is a metalloenzyme which is widely distributed in the living world, and it is essential for the regulation of acid-base balance. Anti-CA antibodies have been reported in many disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, endometriosis, idiopathic chronic pancreatitis, type 1 diabetes and Graves' disease. The goal of this study was to investigate

B7-H4, one of the co-stimulatory molecules of the B7 family, has been shown to play an important role in negatively regulating the adaptive immune response by inhibiting the proliferation, activation, and cytokine production of T cells. In this study, we investigate the role of B7-H4 in development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We investigated a murine model of SLE using transfer of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) that were incubated with activated syngeneic lymphocyte-derived DNA. The recipient mouse produced anti-ds-DNA antibodies as well as displayed splenomegaly and ly
