In the evaluation of patients with complaints of dizziness, hearing loss, and/or tinnitus, the primary objective is to determine the site of the lesion. An accurate localization of the lesion is important for selecting the most appropriate radiologic study. The information obtained from the vestibular and audiometeric evaluations identifies the site of the lesion accurately. For the vestibular evaluation we use photoelectric nystagmography (PENG) and the Torok monothermal differential caloric test. The initial audiometeric evaluation consists of a pure-tone audiogram and speech discrimination …

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) encompass a variety of dysfunction of the maxillofacial region. A strong relationship between TMD and cervical spine pain exists, and widespread hyperalgesia is common in TMD. This case describes the management and reduction in regional hyperalgesia in a patient with chronic TMD.

OBJECTIVE: Recommendation for cochlear implant (CI) treatment for individuals with severe to profound single-sided deafness (SSD) and asymmetrical hearing loss (AHL) is on the rise. This raises the need for greater consistency in the definition of CI candidacy for these cases and in the assessment methods of patient-related benefits to permit effective comparison and interpretation of the outcomes with both conventional and implantable options across studies.
METHOD: During a dedicated seminar on implant treatment in AHL patients, the panellists of the closing round table reviewed the clinica

HYPOTHESIS: Ménière's disease significantly impacts on an individual's mental health and subjective well-being (SWB).
BACKGROUND: Ménière's disease is an unpredictable illness that impacts on mental health. The symptom triad of vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss all contribute to the disabling nature of the condition. To date, limited research has investigated the mental health and SWB impact of Ménière's disease.
METHODS: We investigated the mental health and SWB of 1,376 Ménière's sufferers in the UK Biobank and compared this to over 500,000 controls. Participants in the Biobank were aske…

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is an uncommon tick-borne multisystemic infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. The most common clinical manifestation is erythema migrans. In this report, a very unusual presentation of this condition is described, in which sudden onset sensorineural hearing loss was the sole presenting symptom.
METHODS: Case report and review of English-language literature.
RESULTS: A patient presented with sensorineural hearing loss, with no other symptoms or signs. Acute Lyme infection was detected by laboratory tests. Magnetic resonance imaging showed signs of labyrinthitis of

HYPOTHESIS: The study of infant temporal bones with tuberculosis (TB) of the middle ear and mastoid could provide information to assist with clinical diagnosis in this population.
BACKGROUND: The TB pandemic has become a critical global public health problem. With the rising incidence of the disease, otolaryngologists might encounter an increased frequency of otologic TB. Pediatric temporal bone reports of TB are rare.
METHODS: Light microscopic examination was performed on both temporal bones from an infant who died as a result of miliary TB.
RESULTS: The tympanic membranes were thickened

The prevalence of hyperacusis, and subjective ear noise in particular, tends to increase in the general population. The data available in the literature show that physiotherapeutical procedures are the most effective treatment of this abnormality. The techniques and devices using fluctuating currents were employed to treat 40 patients. A "SLUKH-OTO-1" (HEARING-OTO) device is of use now. This procedure proved to be the most effective in case of hyperacusis and subjective ear noise without hearing disorder, there was also a high percentage of positive results in chronic neurosensory hypoacusis.
