Optic hypoplasia with pituitary dwarfism (Kaplan-Grumbach-Hoyt syndrome, or DeMorsier syndrome).

A case of a 14-year-old boy with optic hypoplasia and pituitary dwarfism was presented. Eye Examination showed typical hypoplasia of the left optic nerve and mild hypoplasia of the right optic nerve. Except for dwarfism and nystagmus, the appearance of the patient was not unusual. Computed tomography revealed an enlargement of the suprachiasmatic cistern, and the presence of the septum pellucidum. The pituitary function tests revealed complete deficiency in GH, and poor or intermediate secretion in ACTH, TSH, PRL, LH and FSH. Urine volume and specific gravity were normal. Therapy with human gr

Significance of the disc damage likelihood scale objectively measured by a non-mydriatic fundus camera in preperimetric glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To assess the correlation between the disc damage likelihood scale (DDLS) objectively measured by a non-mydriatic fundus camera, Heidelberg Retina Tomograph 3, and optic coherence tomography in preperimetric glaucoma. METHODS: One-hundred-twenty-five patients with preperimetric primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (n=30) were included (mean age 58.9±15.9 years). All three devices graded the optic disc topography: Diagnosis 1 was defined as "outside normal limits", while Diagnosis 2 as "borderline or outside normal limits". RESULTS: For Diagnosis 1, a sig

Drug-Induced Retinal Toxicity.

Despite the protective blood-ocular barrier, various drugs can induce retinal damage, manifesting as retinal pigment epithelium dysfunction, photoreceptor degeneration, vascular abnormalities, ganglion cell damage, optic nerve impairment, or uveitis. These toxic effects are often linked to mechanisms such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cytoskeletal disruption. Early detection through advanced imaging techniques like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG), combined with timely intervention, is critical to preventing irreversible vision

A useful technique of starting internal limiting membrane peeling from the edge of the internal limiting membrane defect in epiretinal membrane surgery.

UNLABELLED: Clinicians should be aware that internal limiting membrane (ILM) defects may occur concurrently with epiretinal membrane, and starting ILM peeling at the ILM defect margin may be useful in such cases. ABSTRACT: We describe a useful surgical technique for the treatment of idiopathic epiretinal membrane with concurrent internal limiting membrane (ILM) defect, in which ILM peeling was started from the ILM defect margin. A dissociated optic nerve fiber layer-like appearance on fundus examination and optical coherence tomography may suggest an ILM defect.

Unilateral compressive optic neuropathy due to skull hyperostosis secondary to nutritional vitamin A deficiency.

We report a 17-year-old boy who presented with a chronic left unilateral optic neuropathy. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated compression of the left optic nerve due to skull hyperostosis. He was found to be profoundly vitamin A deficient secondary to an unusual diet consisting predominantly of potato chips and crisps. Skull hyperostosis with cranial neuropathies and other neurological abnormalities has been described in growing animals fed vitamin A deficient diets but has not been previously reported in humans.

High-throughput whole-brain scattering imaging resolves amyloid plaques through clearing-assisted contrast modulation.

Label-free scattering imaging is widely used in pathology because it enables sensitive tissue assessment without exogenous contrast agents. Yet its limited optical penetration has prevented scattering-based methods from being applied to whole-organ pathology mapping. Here we present clearing-assisted scattering tomography (CAST), a high-throughput, label-free whole-brain mesoscope enabled by selective lipid clearance for scattering enhancement (SELiC). SELiC modulates endogenous refractive-index heterogeneity in cleared tissue, providing whole-brain optical penetration while retaining strong s

Evaluation of the Therapeutic Efficacy of Stromal Cells Isolated from Human Corneal Lenticules for Corneal Repair after Injury in an In Vivo Model.

Corneal fibroblasts and keratocytes differentiated from fibroblasts were used for cell therapy. Mechanical injury to the mouse cornea was modeled in the form of a tunnel defect into the depth of the cornea in the central optical zone. Corneal thickness and transparency were assessed by optical computed tomography at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after the injury. The therapeutic effectiveness of fibroblasts was delayed and was associated with paracrine influences of keratocytes. The conditioned medium of keratocytes reduced adhesion ability of fibroblasts and their proliferative and migratory activitie

Wide-field quantitative micro-elastography of freshly excised human prostate.

Prostate cancer is a significant global health issue. To advance diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as image-guided needle biopsy, optical imaging methods offering high spatial resolution have been proposed. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows for detailed visualization of prostate microarchitecture in three dimensions; however, it does not reliably differentiate tumors from surrounding healthy tissue. In this study, we use wide-field quantitative micro-elastography (QME) to image the micro-scale mechanical properties of freshly excised human prostate to provide additional contras

Wide-field OCT angiography for non-human primate retinal imaging.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a well-established research tool for vision research in animal models capable of providing in vivo imaging of the retina. Structural OCT can be enhanced using OCT angiography (OCTA) processing in order to provide simultaneously acquired, automatically co-registered vascular information. Currently available OCT. Currently available OCTA lack either large field of view or high resolution. In this study we developed a wide-field (60-degree), high-resolution (10.5-µm optical transverse) and high-sensitivity (104-dB) OCTA-enabled system for non-human primate im

Osteoarthritis and psoriatic arthritis: findings in three-dimensional biophotonics imaging.

The goal of this study is to capture the quantitative optical features of degenerative finger joints based on x-ray aided three-dimensional (3D) diffuse optical tomography (DOT). It is anticipated that the fused imaging technique can be applied to identifying the significant differences between osteoarthritis (OA) and psoriatic arthritis (PA). For a case study, total 6 subjects were selected to study the distal interphalangeal (DIP) finger joints. 2 OA patients, 2 PA patients and 2 healthy subjects were examined clinically first. Their DIP finger joints were then scanned by the multimodality i

Low-energy femtosecond laser lens fragmentation techniques for cataract.

Femtosecond laser has become an important tool in cataract surgery due to its precision and minimally invasive nature. However, the strong scattering properties of the lens limit surgical efficiency, especially when it comes to effectively cutting highly opaque and hard cataracts with femtosecond laser. This study proposes a method for achieving optical transparency in opaque lenses through tartrazine treatment. This treatment method can effectively enhance the deep focusing ability of femtosecond laser, improving cutting quality and efficiency when used in femtosecond-assisted cataract surger

Retinal intrinsic optical signals in a cat model of primary congenital glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To examine the impact of reduced inner retinal function and breed on intrinsic optical signals in cats. METHODS: Retinal intrinsic optical signals were recorded from anesthetized cats with a modified fundus camera. Near infrared light (NIR, 700-900 nm) was used to illuminate the retina while a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera captured the NIR reflectance of the retina. Visible stimuli (540 nm) evoked patterned changes in NIR retinal reflectance. NIR intrinsic signals were compared across three subject groups: two Siamese cats with primary congenital glaucoma (PCG), a control Siames
