Group-based Education and monitoring program delivered by community health workers to improve control of high blood pressure in island districts of lake victoria, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living in communities with poor access to healthcare may be unaware of their high blood pressure (BP). While the use of community health workers (CHWs) can address gaps in human resources for health, CHWs in Uganda have not been used previously for BP screening and management. We report the results of an initiative to train CHWs to evaluate BP and to administer group-based education in Kalangala and Buvuma Island Districts of Lake Victoria, Uganda. METHODS: We randomly selected 42 of 212 villages. We trained CHWs based in island districts on measuring BP. CHWs visited

Inter-laboratory reproduction and sensitivity study of a finite element model to quantify human femur failure load: Case of metastases.

INTRODUCTION: Metastases increase the risk of fracture when affecting the femur. Consequently, clinicians need to know if the patient's femur can withstand the stress of daily activities. The current tools used in clinics are not sufficiently precise. A new method, the CT-scan-based finite element analysis, gives good predictive results. However, none of the existing models were tested for reproducibility. This is a critical issue to address in order to apply the technique on a large cohort around the world to help evaluate bone metastatic fracture risk in patients. The aim of this study is th

Study protocol of brief intervention using gene polymorphism information for excessive drinking among Japanese college students and adults aged 20-30 years: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The alcohol-metabolizing enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) is a carcinogenic acetaldehyde-degrading enzyme, and its low activity is a genetic constitution peculiar to East Asians. People with low alcohol dehydrogenase 1B activity (ADH1B*1/*1 genotype) have a high risk of developing head and neck cancer and alcoholism. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of brief interventions for excessive drinking among college students and adults in their 20s, including information on five constitutions that combine the ALDH2 and ADH1B genotypes. METHODS: Participants comprised un

Impaired Motor Skill Acquisition Using Mirror Visual Feedback Improved by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in Patients With Parkinson's Disease.

Recent non-invasive brain stimulation techniques in combination with motor training can enhance neuroplasticity and learning. It is reasonable to assume that such neuroplasticity-based interventions constitute a useful rehabilitative tool for patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD). Regarding motor skill training, many kinds of tasks that do not involve real motor movements have been applied to PD patients. The purpose of this study is to elucidate whether motor skill training using mirror visual feedback (MVF) is useful to patients with PD in order to improve untrained hand performance depende

[The Role of Nurses in Bridging the Health Literacy Gap: Empowering Patients in the Post-Pandemic Era].

Health literacy (HL) is an essential ability used by people throughout life to access, understand, appraise, and apply health related information and services and is widely recognized as a key determinant of health. HL has been the focus of increasing international attention in the 21st century, with the World Health Organization identifying HL as a 2030 sustainable development target (World Health Organization, 2016). "Strengthening health communication and improving HL nationwide" is also an issue targeted in a Taiwan government white paper for improvement by 2025. Key related actions and st

The Impact of Military Tobacco Control Policy: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use is synonymous with the military. Despite that military personnel are trained to follow commands, opportunities exist to implement various tobacco control strategies. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the impact of tobacco control policy employed in military settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched for published English articles in Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases using relevant subject headings without year restriction. We included randomized controlled trials, nonrandomized controlled trials, case-control, cohort, controll

Changes in Sexual Risk-taking Behaviours Among Men After Participating in the PEST4MEN HIV Self-Testing Intervention in Two Fishing Communities in Central Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The availability of free HIV self-test kits in the community may alter people's sexual behaviours in some way. However, little evidence exists to confirm or refute this assertion. We assessed changes in sexual risk-taking behaviours among men living in a fishing community before and after participating in an HIV self-testing (HIVST) intervention. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data collected as part of a large peer-led HIVST intervention for men (PEST4MEN) in two fishing communities located in Kalangala (1) and Buvuma (1) Island districts. Following a baseline interview

Identification of the optimal candidates to benefit from surgery and chemotherapy among elderly female breast cancer patients with bone metastases.

Breast cancer is currently the most common malignant tumor affecting women's health worldwide. The rise in breast cancer metastases among patients is attributed to the inherent variability in metastatic behavior. In breast cancer, bones are the primary location for distant metastases, significantly impacting the survival rates of elderly (≥ 65) patients. The use of surgery and chemotherapy in this population is controversial. This study seeks to create a tool for forecasting overall survival (OS) in older breast cancer patients with bone metastases and to determine the optimal candidates for s

Determinants of fertility desire among reproductive aged married and cohabiting women in Ethiopia a multilevel analysis of PMAET 2021 data.

In Ethiopia, numerous efforts have been undertaken to control the rapid growth of the population and decrease the average number of births per woman, in the last ten years, though it has not been possible to achieve as much change as was planned and intended in the National Health Sector Transformation Plan (HSTP II) and reproductive health (RH 2015-2020) strategies. The annual growth of the population and fertility rates remained at 2.7 and 4.6, respectively. Fertility is one of the fundamental aspects influencing population dynamics, while women fertility desire to have a child plays a cruci

Baseline characterization of entomological drivers of malaria transmission in Namibia: a targeted operational entomological surveillance strategy.

BACKGROUND: Namibia's focus on the elimination of malaria requires an evidence-based strategy directed at understanding and targeting the entomological drivers of malaria transmission. In 2018 and 2019, the Namibia National Vector-borne Diseases Control Program (NVDCP) implemented baseline entomological surveillance based on a question-based approach outlined in the Entomological Surveillance Planning Tool (ESPT). In the present study, we report on the findings of the ESPT-based NVDCP on baseline vector species composition and bionomic traits in malaria endemic regions in northern Namibia, whi

Association between self-purchased medication use and gastric disease among Chinese adults: a cross-sectional analysis based on CHARLS 2018 data.

BACKGROUND: Gastric diseases are a major health burden, especially in East Asia, with high incidence and mortality rates. While Helicobacter pylori infection and poor lifestyle behaviors are established risk factors, the impact of drug-related gastric injury in aging populations remains underexplored. In China, polypharmacy is common among older adults, with nearly 40% using self-purchased medications without professional guidance. Similar trends are observed in other aging societies, highlighting the global challenge of unregulated drug use. Existing studies lack adjustments for comorbidities

Sex-Specific Misclassification of Obesity When Using Body Mass Index in Young Healthcare Professionals: A Large Cross-Sectional Study Using Multiple Adiposity Indices.

Background: Body mass index (BMI) remains the standard tool for obesity screening; however, it does not account for body fat distribution or visceral adiposity, potentially leading to clinically relevant misclassification-particularly in young adults. Evidence on this issue in healthcare professionals is limited. Objective: To evaluate the extent of obesity misclassification when using BMI compared with alternative anthropometric and body composition indices, and to examine sex-specific associations between lifestyle factors and different adiposity phenotypes in young healthcare professionals.

Expressive Prosody in Patients With Focal Anterior Temporal Neurodegeneration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Progressive focal anterior temporal lobe (ATL) neurodegeneration has been historically called semantic dementia. More recently, semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) and semantic behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (sbvFTD) have been linked with predominant left and right ATL neurodegeneration, respectively. Nonetheless, clinical tools for an accurate diagnosis of sbvFTD are still lacking. Expressive prosody refers to the modulation of pitch, loudness, tempo, and quality of voice used to convey emotional and linguistic information and has been l
