Gingival coverage of iatrogenically denuded labial bone resulting from thermal trauma.

Damage to periodontal tissue as a result of thermal injury often causes severe gingival recession and denuded alveolar bone. In this case report, two patients undergoing gingival coverage of iatrogenically denuded labial bone associated with the maxillary central incisor and the lateral incisor are presented. The first patient had gingival necrosis and labial alveolar bone exposure on the maxillary left central incisor and was referred from a local dental clinic. The patient had undergone root canal treatment 2 weeks previously. The gingival necrosis was assumed to be caused by a heated plugge

Root surface biomodification with an Er:YAG laser for the treatment of gingival recession with subepithelial connective tissue grafts.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Root surface biomodification has been used to treat gingival recession and periodontitis. The principle for this procedure is that removing the smear layer from the root surfaces exposes collagen fibers, which leads to improved healing. Clinical studies generally have failed to find any improvement in clinical parameters when using such agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the outcome of gingival recession therapy using the subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) with or without Er:YAG laser application for root surface biomodification. A two-stage approach using an autogenous masticatory mucosal graft and an autogenous connective tissue graft to treat gingival recession: a case report.

Various methods have been suggested to cover a denuded root. However, this is especially difficult in the lower molar area when root recession has the additional complication of an inadequate zone of attached gingiva in association with frenal attachment. This case report indicates that a lower molar with Miller Class III gingival recession associated with frenal attachment can be successfully treated by a two-step procedure with an autogenous masticatory mucosal graft and a connective tissue graft.

Severe phenytoin-induced gingival enlargement associated with periodontitis.

The potential of phenytoin to induce gingival hyperplasia has been well-established. High levels of dental plaque and calculus have been reported as a critical co-factor for the development and severity of phenytoin-induced gingival hyperplasia. This article documents a severe gingival enlargement associated with periodontitis (in a patient under combined anti-epileptic therapy) and provides a rational model for its clinical management. Initially, full-mouth scaling and root planing, oral hygiene instructions, and phenytoin withdrawal were performed; however, clinical results demonstrated part

Root resorption repair in mandibular first premolars after rotation. A transmission electron microscopy analysis combined with immunolabeling of osteopontin.

INTRODUCTION: A previous study with scanning electron microscopy showed that orthodontic root resorption occurs at the lateral surfaces of premolar roots for 2 to 6 weeks after orthodontic rotation. The purpose of this investigation was to observe how resorbed cementum repairs during rotation movement. METHODS: Twenty-one mandibular first premolars from 12 patients, orthodontically indicated for extraction, were used. They were intra-individually divided into 2 groups: 8 teeth were not moved (control group), and 13 were rotated (experimental group). In the experimental group, a rotational for

Apical inflammatory root resorption: a correlative radiographic and histological assessment.

AIM: To assess the reliability of routine single radiographs in the diagnosis of inflammatory apical root resorption by correlating the radiographic and histological findings. METHODOLOGY: The material comprised serial and step serial sections of plastic-embedded root-apices with attached apical periodontitis lesions that were prepared for a previous study and the diagnostic radiographs. The histological sections of 114 specimens were analysed by light microscopy and categorized into three groups: (i) those without any resorption (0); (ii) those with moderate resorption (+); and (iii) those w

Two radicular cysts associated with endodontically treated primary teeth: rationale for long-term follow-up.

Although radicular cysts are relatively rare, they do occur. In addition, it appears that these lesions present in association with endodontically treated primary teeth. As shown in this paper and previous reports, cysts can be associated with a variety of pulp therapies. These lesions can lead to bony expansion and resorption. Radicular cysts may also cause displacement and damage to the developing permanent dentition. Given the severity of these sequelae it is prudent to recommend regular radiographic examination of primary teeth that have undergone pulp therapy.

Resorbed lateral incisors adjacent to impacted canines have normal crown size.

The importance of detecting maxillary canine impaction is that it may compromise dental health, particularly since a small but significant proportion of impacted canines is associated with the resorption of the roots of neighboring teeth. It has been shown that the existence of small and peg-shaped lateral incisors is highly correlated with maxillary canine palatal impaction. To date, however, it has not been established whether the root resorption that occurs has a similar correlation or a predilection for one or other types of lateral incisor crown structure. Accordingly, a group of patients

Human cellular mixed stratified cementum: a tissue with alternating layers of acellular extrinsic- and cellular intrinsic fiber cementum.

Following the first description of the formal genesis of acellular extrinsic- and cellular intrinsic fiber cementum on growing human teeth, the present paper introduces cellular mixed stratified cementum as a particular tissue. Based on a large and diverse material (human premolars and molars) that was examined by various methods, such as microradiography, light microscopy using transmitted and polarized light, and scanning- and transmission-electron microscopy, the composition and structure of this type of cementum is described. Cellular mixed stratified cementum covers the apex, the apical t

Immunocytochemical localization of cathepsins B and G in odontoclasts of human deciduous teeth.

For clarification of the mechanisms by which odontoclasts resorb deciduous teeth during physiological root resorption, cysteine-proteinases such as cathepsins B and G were immunocytochemically localized in odontoclasts at the ultrastructural level. Extracted human deciduous teeth undergoing root resorption were fixed with a mixture of formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde and processed for immunocytochemical detection of these enzymes. Sheep antisera, raised against either human cathepsin B or G, were used as primary antibodies. In odontoclasts, specific immunogold labeling of both anti-cathepsin B

[Corono-radicular caries: a histoclinical approach].

Due to aging and gingival recession, the radicular structures are exposed to cariogenic attacks from the oral cavity. This phenomenon leads to a constantly higher frequency of root caries. The aspect of these carious lesions was analysed by a histological and an SEM study. To conclude the study, a clinical description of the lesions and an epidemiological survey were realized on 112 patients for 16 months.

An ultrastructural study of bacterial invasion and tissue breakdown in human experimental root-surface caries.

This study describes the structural features of the interface between microbial deposits and root cementum in actively progressing root-surface caries lesions developed experimentally in six elderly individuals. A total of 18 specimens was examined by microradiography, and a further 18 by light and transmission electron microscopy after intra-oral periods of one, two, and three months. All specimens showed various degrees of subsurface dissolution of mineral and bacterial invasion of the cementum. Although the microradiographic pattern of mineral loss was subsurface in nature, transmission ele

The effects of partial demineralization and fibronectin on migration and growth of gingival epithelial cells on cementum in vitro.

The capacity of mineralized cementum to support epithelial cell migration and growth and the effect that fibronectin and partial demineralization of cementum have on these processes were assessed in vitro. Dog gingival explants, 1 X 2 mm, were cultured on the cementum surfaces of pig root pieces in a defined medium consisting of DMEM and F12 (1V/1V), transferrin, insulin, epidermal growth factor, cortisone, selenium, and high-density lipoprotein. Sixty root pieces were divided into four equal groups according to the treatment: (1) untreated mineralized cementum; (2) treated with 5 micrograms o

Effect of surgical sympathectomy on bone remodeling at rat incisor and molar root sockets.

Sympathectomy was carried out in 4-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats by unilateral surgical removal of the superior cervical ganglion. Sham-treated rats served as controls. All rats were injected with tetracycline hydrochloride at surgery as well as 36 hr prior to sacrifice. Rats were killed at 7, 14, or 21 days following sympathectomy. Mandibular periosteal and endosteal surfaces were analyzed by fluorochrome morphometry. Osteoclasts were identified by acid phosphatase staining, and incisor and molar root sockets were analyzed morphometrically. Following sympathectomy, periosteal and endosteal app
