Flow diversion for vertebral artery fusiform/dissecting aneurysm-related hemifacial spasm: illustrative cases.

BACKGROUND: Hemifacial spasm (HFS) results from pulsatile neurovascular conflict at the facial nerve root exit zone (REZ) and is treated with microvascular decompression (MVD). Aneurysm-related HFS is rare, and evidence for flow diversion (FD) is limited. OBSERVATIONS: Two women with vertebral artery (VA) fusiform/dissecting aneurysms presented with ipsilateral HFS and underwent flow diverter treatment. Case 1 had bilateral fusiform VA aneurysms; the symptomatic left V4 lesion compressed the REZ without branch incorporation. Overlapping Pipeline Shield devices achieved complete occlusion and

Prevalence and predictors of silent vertebral compression fractures using DXA: a UK Biobank Imaging Study.

OBJECTIVES: Silent vertebral fractures are common but under-recognised. We aimed to estimate the prevalence in an asymptomatic population and to identify demographic and clinical predictors using the UK Biobank data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: DXA spine images from 2446 asymptomatic UK Biobank participants aged 40-79 years were analysed retrospectively. Vertebral fractures were defined as moderate or severe deformities (≥ 25% vertebral height loss). Fractures were identified using an artificial-intelligence-assisted six-point morphometric algorithm with manual correction and radiologist confirmat

Hierarchical Gene Cluster Regulation Across Vertebrate Skins: Developmental Control of Keratin Gene Expression.

Developmental competence allows tissues to respond to inductive cues before committing to specialized forms, but how this potential is encoded at clustered gene-family loci is poorly understood. We use vertebrate skin to address this problem. Epidermis responds to regional dermal signals before committing to feather, scale, or differentiated programs, and α-keratin loci provide a stringent genomic test: separated type-I/type-II clusters show coordinated transcriptional pairing, yet individual keratin genes are selectively deployed across appendage, differentiation, and disease states. Using ch

A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Alert for Vertebral Artery Pseudoaneurysm: Lessons From a Case Initially Misdiagnosed as Schwannoma.

Pseudoaneurysm of the vertebral artery is a rare vascular lesion characterized by localized pulsatile hematomas formed in surrounding tissues following vertebral artery wall rupture, presenting with nonspecific clinical manifestations. This report describes a 57-year-old male patient presenting with "dizziness." Initial MRI suggested a mass in the right C3/4 intervertebral foramen, initially suspected as a schwannoma, but digital subtraction angiography ultimately confirmed a pseudoaneurysm of the vertebral artery rather than a schwannoma. This case highlights the imaging mimicry of vertebral

From atlas to sacrum: Morphological and morphometric characterization of the feline vertebral canal using computed tomography.

The vertebral canal plays a critical role in protecting the spinal cord and maintaining biomechanical stability. Although the vertebral canal has been extensively studied in dogs, equivalent analyses in cats are limited. This study provides a comprehensive morphological and morphometric assessment of the feline vertebral canal from atlas (C1) to sacrum (Sc) using computed tomography (CT). In 35 cats, predominantly European Shorthairs, cross-sectional area (CSA) and perimeter (P) were determined at cranial, central, and caudal levels of each vertebra. Vertebral canal circularity (CVC) was calcu

Extrinsic polarity cues control lamination versus cluster-based organization in vertebrate retinal development.

A wide range of retinal architectures allow metazoans to sense and respond to their environment. Early eye anlagen in both invertebrates and vertebrates share an initial pseudo-stratified epithelial organization, which in vertebrates forms a laminated retina, whereas invertebrate neuroepithelia differentiate into repetitive clusters. The contribution of epithelial polarity to vertebrate retinal lamination has remained difficult to address in vivo. Using medaka (Oryzias latipes) retinal organoids, we modulated polarity to assess its impact on the retinal architecture. We show that organoids und

Aggressive lumbar vertebral hemangioma presenting with foot drop mimicking spinal tuberculosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive vertebral hemangiomas are uncommon vascular lesions that may present with epidural extension and neurological deficit. In tuberculosis-endemic regions, atypical vertebral hemangiomas may mimic spinal tuberculosis, resulting in diagnostic confusion and delay in definitive management. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 20-year-old male presented with a 1-year history of left lower-limb radiculopathy followed by progressive left foot drop for 1 month. The patient had previously received empirical antitubercular therapy without clinical improvement. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated

Endovascular treatment of in-stent restenosis after vertebral artery ostial stenting: incidence, risks and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: In-stent restenosis (ISRS) is a major concern following vertebral artery (VA) ostial stenting, potentially leading to recurrent symptoms or ischemic strokes. Despite the growing use of endovascular treatment for VA ostial stenosis (VAOS), data on efficacy and safety of the endovascular re-treatment for ISRS is sparse. AIM OF STUDY: To evaluate the incidence of ISRS after VA ostial stenting and assess the safety and effectiveness of endovascular re-interventions. METHODS: This single-center retrospective analysis included patients who underwent re-treatment for ISRS >50% using e

High-Riding Vertebral Artery in Cervical Spine Surgery: A Review of Preoperative Identification and Surgical Implications.

High-riding vertebral artery (HRVA) is an important anatomical variant of the vertebral artery that poses significant challenges during cervical spine surgery, particularly at the C1-C2 level, where it reduces the safe corridor for pedicle screw placement and increases the risk of arterial injury. This narrative review summarizes current evidence regarding the definition, prevalence, imaging identification, and surgical implications of HRVA, along with risk mitigation strategies. Radiographically, HRVA is most commonly defined by reduced C2 isthmus height (C2IsH) (≤5 mm) and/or internal height

Vertebrate-wide transcriptomic screening identifies immune cell-specific expression of the conserved OR-κ gene.

Vertebrate chemoreceptor genes play a central role in detecting environmental chemical compounds through the olfactory organs and taste buds, enabling the perception of odors and tastants that are critical for survival. Through evolutionary processes, these genes have repeatedly undergone duplication, divergence, and pseudogenization, giving rise to lineage-specific gene repertoires that reflect ecological and behavioral adaptation. While the canonical functions of these chemoreceptors are confined to the nasal and oral cavities, accumulating evidence, particularly in mammals, indicates that s

Efficacy and safety of curved vertebroplasty in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Curved vertebroplasty (CVP), including percutaneous curved vertebroplasty (PCVP) and percutaneous curved kyphoplasty (PCKP), represents a novel surgical modality in recent years for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). Although numerous clinical studies have reported its safety and efficacy, meta-analyses remain necessary to further validate the robustness of this evidence. METHODS: Based on the PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive literature search of four databases—PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science—for all relevant studies published f

DGOU classification guided cement diffusion strategy in unilateral kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

The optimal cement diffusion pattern in unilateral percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) remains debated. This multicenter retrospective study investigated whether crossing the vertebral midline with bone cement is necessary under the DGOU classification. A total of 440 patients with single-level OVCFs treated by unilateral PKP (2020-2023) were categorized into OF1, OF2, or OF3 types based on the DGOU classification and further divided into crossing and non-crossing groups according to postoperative CT. Outcomes included VAS, ODI, and radiograp

Deep Neural Networks for Automatic Detection and Classification of Traumatic Cervical Vertebral Fractures on CT Scans.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of a deep learning model designed to detect column-specific cervical spine (C-spine) fractures using CT imaging. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Accurate and timely diagnosis of C-spine fractures is essential in trauma cases to prevent complications and improve patient outcomes. Although CT imaging is the gold standard for fracture detection, it is resource-intensive and prone to human error. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) offer the potential to diagnose and classify C-spine fractures with little human input. ME

Clinical Outcomes of Balloon Kyphoplasty for Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures With Posterior Element Injury: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction Balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) has been shown to be effective in treating osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs); however, its applicability in cases with posterior element injury remains unclear. Posterior element injuries may reflect underlying spinal instability, which could affect clinical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of BKP in OVFs complicated by posterior element injury. Materials and methods We retrospectively analyzed 18 of 189 patients who underwent BKP between 2012 and 2023, in whom posterior element injury was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (
