Sine spin flat-detector CT for enhanced brain parenchyma visualization: an intraindividual comparison on a latest-generation angiography system.

BACKGROUND: Flat-detector computed tomography (FDCT) is increasingly used for periinterventional cerebral imaging. The recently introduced Sine Spin FDCT (S-FDCT) aims to improve cerebral soft tissue contrast compared with conventional FDCT (C-FDCT). Reliable visualization of healthy brain parenchyma is essential for detecting pathological changes. This study compared gray-white matter differentiation between intraindividually acquired S-FDCT and C-FDCT. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database included patients with ischemic stroke treated by mechanical thromb

Roles of posterior parietal and dorsal premotor cortices in relative pitch processing: Comparing musical intervals to lexical tones.

Humans use time-varying pitch patterns to convey information in music and speech. Recognition of musical melodies and lexical tones relies on relative pitch (RP), the ability to identify intervals between two pitches. RP processing in music is usually more fine-grained than that in tonal languages. In Western music, there are twelve pitch categories within an octave, whereas there are only three level (non-glide) lexical tones in Taiwanese (or Taiwanese Hokkien, a tonal language). The present study aimed at comparing the neural substrates underlying RP processing of musical melodic intervals w

[Developmental dyslexia].

Developmental dyslexia makes up an important proportion of the known learning disorders. Until the late 1970s most research on dyslexia was carried out by educators and educational psychologists, but soon after the publication of some dyslexic cases with focal disorders of neuronal migration to the cerebral cortex, interest in the neurobiological and neurocognitive underpinnings of dyslexia grew, especially in Europe and North America. There are at least two types of developmental dyslexia--phonological and surface. Surface dyslexia refers to a disorder in which the difficulty lies in reading

[Early latency in pattern-reversal and flash mfVEP].

PURPOSE: The onset of cortical activity evoked by a visual stimulus, the early latency (fL), can be measured by the use of multifocal visual evoked potential (mfVEP). In this study we investigated differences in amplitude and fL between pattern-reversal and flash mfVEP. METHODS: The mfVEP was recorded from 20 subjects using flash and pattern-reversal stimuli. The recordings were done using a two-dimensional Laplacian derivation. After the signals from all 60 stimulus fields were squared and averaged, the sudden rise from baseline activity marked the beginning of evoked cortical activity, whic

Responses to visual stimulation and relationship between visual, auditory, and somatosensory inputs in mouse superior colliculus.

The superior colliculus was studied in anesthetized mice by recording from single cells and from unit clusters. The topographic representation of the visual filed was similar to what has been found in other mammals, with the temporal part of the contralateral visual field projecting posteriorly and the inferior visual field projecting laterally. At the anterior margin of the tectum receptive fields recorded through the contralateral eye and invaded the ipsilateral visual hemifield for up to 35 degrees, suggesting that the entire visual field through one eye is represented on the contralateral

Comparative study of SSVEP characteristics in mixed versus virtual reality across varying depths.

Steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP), owing to their high signal-to-noise ratio and low training cost, are widely regarded as an effective approach for constructing visually driven brain-computer interfaces (BCI), particularly in neurorehabilitation applications. However, the accommodation-vergence conflict (VAC) commonly present in mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays may attenuate neural responses in the visual cortex, thereby compromising the long-term usability of such systems. This study aims to systematically evaluate the effects of MR and VR envir

The second visual area in the marmoset monkey: visuotopic organisation, magnification factors, architectonical boundaries, and modularity.

The organisation of the second visual area (V2) in marmoset monkeys was studied by means of extracellular recordings of responses to visual stimulation and examination of myelin- and cytochrome oxidase-stained sections. Area V2 forms a continuous cortical belt of variable width (1-2 mm adjacent to the foveal representation of V1, and 3-3.5 mm near the midline and on the tentorial surface) bordering V1 on the lateral, dorsal, medial, and tentorial surfaces of the occipital lobe. The total surface area of V2 is approximately 100 mm2, or about 50% of the surface area of V1 in the same individuals

Gene therapy in children with AIPL1-associated severe retinal dystrophy: an open-label, first-in-human interventional study.

BACKGROUND: Retinal dystrophy caused by genetic deficiency of AIPL1 causes severe and rapidly progressive impairment of sight from birth. We sought to evaluate whether early intervention by gene supplementation therapy was safe and could improve outcomes in children with this condition. METHODS: This non-randomised, single-arm, clinical study conducted in the UK involved four children aged 1·0-2·8 years with severe retinal dystrophy associated with biallelic disease-causing sequence variants in AIPL1. We designed a recombinant adeno-associated viral vector comprising the human AIPL1 coding se

Cortical hemodynamic responses during action observation with and without audiovisual stimuli: a randomized controlled experimental trial.

This study investigated whether the inclusion of audiovisual cues during action observation influences cortical hemodynamic responses in healthy young adults. Cortical activation was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) while participants observed action videos under two conditions: an action observation condition with additional audiovisual cues and a conventional action observation condition without such cues. The regions of interest included the primary motor cortex (M1), inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), and inferior parietal lobule (IPL), which are associated with acti

Emergence of β and γ networks following multisensory training.

Our perceptual reality relies on inferences about the causal structure of the world given by multiple sensory inputs. In ecological settings, multisensory events that cohere in time and space benefit inferential processes: hearing and seeing a speaker enhances speech comprehension, and the acoustic changes of flapping wings naturally pace the motion of a flock of birds. Here, we asked how a few minutes of (multi)sensory training could shape cortical interactions in a subsequent unisensory perceptual task. For this, we investigated oscillatory activity and functional connectivity as a function

Dynamic Reconfiguration of Visuomotor-Related Functional Connectivity Networks.

UNLABELLED: Cognitive functions arise from the coordination of large-scale brain networks. However, the principles governing interareal functional connectivity dynamics (FCD) remain elusive. Here, we tested the hypothesis that human executive functions arise from the dynamic interplay of multiple networks. To do so, we investigated FCD mediating a key executing function, known as arbitrary visuomotor mapping, using brain connectivity analyses of high-gamma activity recorded using MEG and intracranial EEG. Visuomotor mapping was found to arise from the dynamic interplay of three partly overlapp

Increased precuneus connectivity during propofol sedation.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging in human participants, we show that sedation by propofol to the point of lost overt responsiveness during the performance of an auditory verbal memory task unexpectedly increases functional connectivity of the precuneus with cortical regions, particularly the dorsal prefrontal and visual cortices. After recovery of consciousness, functional connectivity returns to a pattern similar to that observed during the wakeful baseline. In the context of a recent proposal that highlights the uncoupling of consciousness, connectedness, and responsiveness in gen

Alterations in the processing of non-drug-related affective stimuli in abstinent heroin addicts.

Long-term exposure to drug may alter the neural system associated with affective processing, as evidenced by both clinical observations and behavioral data documenting dysfunctions in emotional experiences and processing in drug addicts. Although many imaging studies examined neural responses to drug or drug-related cues in addicts, there have been few studies explicitly designed to reveal their neural abnormalities in processing non-drug-related natural affective materials. The present study asked abstinent heroin addicts and normal controls to passively view standardized affective pictures o

A first-in-human study of 11C-MTP38, a novel PET ligand for phosphodiesterase 7.

PURPOSE: Phosphodiesterase 7 (PDE7) is an enzyme that selectively hydrolyses cyclic adenosine monophosphate, and its dysfunction is implicated in neuropsychiatric diseases. However, in vivo visualization of PDE7 in human brains has hitherto not been possible. Using the novel PET ligand 11C-MTP38, which we recently developed, we aimed to image and quantify PDE7 in living human brains. METHODS: Seven healthy males underwent a 90-min PET scan after injection of 11C-MTP38. We performed arterial blood sampling and metabolite analysis of plasma in six subjects to obtain a metabolite-corrected input

Detection of Atypical Femur Fractures.

The 2019 International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) Position Development Conference Task Force for monitoring with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) identified detection of atypical femur fractures (AFFs) as an important topic and established this working group to answer key questions in this area. The authors conducted a systematic review of the literature and deliberated on proposed ISCD positions, which were then reviewed by an external expert panel and vetted at the 2019 ISCD Position Development Conference in Kuala Lumpur on March 23, 2019. This paper summarizes the final

An autoradiographic study of the projections from the lateral geniculate body of the rat.

The projections from the lateral geniculate body of the rat were followed using the technique of autoradiography after injections of [3H] proline into the dorsal and/or ventral nuclei of this diencephalic structure. Autoradiographs were prepared from either frozen or paraffin coronal sections through the rat brain. The dorsal nucleus of the lateral geniculate projected via the optic radiation to area 17 of the cerebral cortex. There was also a slight extension of label into the zones of transition between areas 17, 18 and 18a. The distribution of silver grains in the various layers of the cere
