Intraoperative overlay of optic radiation tractography during anteromesial temporal resection: a prospective validation study.

OBJECTIVE: Anteromesial temporal lobe resection (ATLR) results in long-term seizure freedom in patients with drug-resistant focal mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). There is significant anatomical variation in the anterior projection of the optic radiation (OR), known as Meyer's loop, between individuals and between hemispheres in the same individual. Damage to the OR results in contralateral superior temporal quadrantanopia that may preclude driving in 33%-66% of patients who achieve seizure freedom. Tractography of the OR has been shown to prevent visual field deficit (VFD) when surgery i

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells are absent in skin lesions of polymorphic light eruption.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Polymorphic light eruption (PLE) is a common photodermatosis of potential autoimmune origin, and an overlap with lupus erythematosus (LE) has been described. Plasmacytoid dendritic cell (PDC)-induced expression of interferon (IFN)-alpha has been found to be present in LE skin lesions and plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of LE by promoting autoimmunity. We therefore asked whether PDCs may also be involved in the pathogenesis of PLE and searched for those cells [which can be identified by their high levels of interleukin (IL)-3 receptor alpha chain (CD123), combined w

Vision screening of older drivers for preventing road traffic injuries and fatalities.

BACKGROUND: Demographic data in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand suggest a rapid growth in the number of persons over the age of 65 years as the baby boomer generation passes retirement age. As older adults make up an increasing proportion of the population, they are an important consideration when designing future evidence-based traffic safety policies, particularly those that lead to restrictions or cessation of driving. Research has shown that cessation of driving among older drivers can lead to negative emotional consequences such as loss of independence and depressio

Deep learning-assisted near-real-time identification of the inferior mesenteric artery and vein during laparoscopic rectal resection: a single-center proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Reliable identification of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) is essential for safe vascular control during laparoscopic rectal resection (LRR). We developed and internally evaluated a near-real-time semantic segmentation model using standard white-light laparoscopic video to support intraoperative anatomical recognition. METHODS: This single-center retrospective proof-of-concept study included operative videos from 16 patients who underwent LRR between February 2024 and May 2025. Frames were sampled at 1 frame/s, yielding 2,720 expert-annotate

MRI Assessment of Intrinsic Neural Timescale and Gray Matter Volume in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have indicated altered temporal features of the brain function in Parkinson's disease (PD), and the autocorrelation magnitude of intrinsic neural signals, called intrinsic neural timescales, were often applied to estimate how long neural information stored in local brain areas. However, it is unclear whether PD patients at different disease stages exhibit abnormal timescales accompanied with abnormal gray matter volume (GMV). PURPOSE: To assess the intrinsic timescale and GMV in PD. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: 74 idiopathic PD patients (44 early stage (

Development of a colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip for the rapid detection of antibodies against Fasciola gigantica in buffalo.

BACKGROUND: Fasciola gigantica, a tropical liver fluke, infects buffalo in Asian and African countries, causing significant economic losses and posing public health threats. The diagnostic of buffalo fascioliasis caused by F. gigantica is vital in fascioliasis control and preventation. The 22nd gel filtration chromatography fraction of F. gigantica Excretory-Secretory Products (FgESP), namely Fasciola 22 (F22), which was used as a diagnostic antigen in indirect ELISA, has demonstrated great potential for fascioliasis diagnosing. In the absence of rapid diagnostic methods, the use of a colloida

Acoustic spectral feedback in vocal learning: a systematic review of psychological mechanisms and skill outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Vocal skill acquisition is inherently "invisible": learners cannot directly observe the movements of their vocal organs, so traditional instruction depends heavily on the teacher's auditory judgment and metaphorical language. This leaves learners ill-equipped to detect errors and self-correct during independent practice. Spectral and acoustic visualization technologies-pitch-trajectory displays, spectrograms, formant analysis, and physiological biofeedback-can externalize this hidden process, yet systematic synthesis at the level of psychological mechanisms remains scarce. AIM: Us

Comprehensive analysis of two hotspot codons in the TUBB4B gene and associated phenotypes.

Our purpose was to elucidate the genotype and ophthalmological and audiological phenotype in TUBB4B-associated inherited retinal dystrophy (IRD) and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and to model the effects of all possible amino acid substitutions at the hotspot codons Arg390 and Arg391. Six patients from five families with heterozygous missense variants in TUBB4B were included in this observational study. Ophthalmological testing included best-corrected visual acuity, fundus examination, optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence imaging, and full-field electroretinography (ERG).

Reliability and diagnostic performance of a new blood ketone and glucose meter in humans.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and reliable monitoring of blood ketone and glucose levels is useful for athletes adhering to a ketogenic diet who want to verify that they are in a state of ketosis and, therefore, accruing performance adaptations. However, the cost of devices and testing materials may prohibit their use. More affordable field testing systems are available, but their accuracy and reliability remain in question. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the agreement between a previously validated ketone and glucose meter (Meter 1 - Precision Xtra) and a more affordable meter that has

A bibliometric analysis of HIV-1 drug-resistant minority variants from 1999 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: The rapid initiation of antiretroviral therapy has become an international trend, necessitating lifelong medication for all HIV patients. Sanger sequencing, as the gold standard for clinically detecting HIV drug resistance, often fails to detect mutations comprising less than 20% of the total viral population. With the advancement of detection technologies, HIV-1 drug-resistant minority variants have garnered increasing attention. Few studies have analyzed the hotspots and trends in this field, which bibliometrics can effectively address. METHODS: Publications related to HIV-1 DRM

Investigating GABA concentrations measured with macromolecule suppressed and unsuppressed MEGA-PRESS MR spectroscopy and their relationship with BOLD responses in the occipital cortex.

BACKGROUND: A combination of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and functional (f)MRI is a promising method for studying brain activity. Negative results have, however, produced uncertainty as to the validity of the approach. Using a MEGA-PRESS sequence adapted to suppress the macromolecule signal (GABA-) has been suggested as a key methodological improvement, but there is some doubt as to the relationship between such estimates and those from the standard sequence (GABA+), making interpretation difficult. PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between GABA+ and GABA- estimates from the
