Clinically relevant extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing multi-resistant Escherichia coli have been on the rise for years. Initially restricted to mostly a clinical context, recent findings prove their prevalence in extraclinical settings independent of the original occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in the environment. To get further insights into the complex ecology of potentially clinically relevant ESBL-producing E. coli, 24 isolates from wild birds in Berlin, Germany, and 40 ESBL-producing human clinical E. coli isolates were comparatively analyzed. Isolates of ST410 occu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Increasing rates of life-threatening infections due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) gram-negative bacteria, such as carbapenemase-producer strains, as well as pathogens that are resistant to all current therapeutic options, have been reported. The number of compounds that are currently being developed is still insufficient to control this global threat. We have reviewed the current available options for the treatment of MDR gram-negative infections, including combination regimens employing older antimicrobials and new compounds.
RECENT FINDINGS: A limited number of large trial

Cholera is a major cause of illness in the developing world. During the monsoon season, small sporadic clusters of cholera cases are reported on an annual basis in Karnataka, India. During the monsoons of 2013, there was a cholera outbreak in Badami, a remote area of Bagalkot district in Karnataka. The multi-drug-resistant Vibrio cholerae O1 serotype Ogawa was found to be responsible for this outbreak. On 5 August 2013, a 30-year-old woman presented with severe dehydration and watery diarrhea at the Aganwadi Health Centre in Badami. A total of 49 suspected cholera cases were reported, with an

Multidrug resistant bacteria (MDR bacteria), such as extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) Enterobacteriaceae, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), pose a challenge to the human health care system. In recent years, these MDR bacteria have been detected increasingly outside the hospital environment. Also the contamination of food with MDR bacteria, particularly of meat and meat products, is a concern. The aim of the study was to evaluate the occurrence of MDR bacteria in chicken meat on the Austrian market. For this study, 50 chicken

We evaluated the frequency of occurrence and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from bacteremic patients with UTI from European (EU) and United States (USA) hospitals during a 3-year period (2009-2011). Susceptibility testing was performed by the reference broth microdilution method on 2071 Gram-negative bacilli. The most frequently isolated pathogens were Escherichia coli (63·3/71·3% in USA/EU), Klebsiella spp. (16·7/11·2%) and Proteus mirabilis (6·4/5·0%). Escherichia coli susceptibility rates were generally similar in the USA and EU, with extended-spect

A high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/ MS) method has been developed for the determination of eight compounds in milk and milk powder. They are four penicillins (penicillin G, penicillin V, amoxicillin and ampicillin) and four major beta-lactamase enzymatic metabolites of them (penilloic acid G, penilloic acid V, amoxiilloic acid and ampilloic acid). The compounds were extracted from the samples with acetonitrile and water, cleaned-up by HLB solid-phase extraction cartridges, and then detected by HPLC-MS/MS and quantified by external standard method. Urinary tract infection (UTI) may predominantly involve the lower urinary tract, i.e. acute cystitis, or upper urinary tract consisting of the renal pelvis and kidney,, i.e. acute pyelonephritis The incidence of acute pyelonephritis is higher in young women than in men but the incidence in men over 65 is similar to that in older women. Women have up to a 10% risk of recurrent acute pyelonephritis in the year following a first acute episode. The equivalent risk in men is 6%. Acute pyelonephritis may be uncomplicated and resolve without serious sequelae. A minority of episodes may be complicated

INTRODUCTION: Currently, one of the most serious problems in medicine is the increasing resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antimicrobial drugs. Bacterial resistance may potentially be solved in particular by decreasing the consumption of antibiotics and increasing the quality of their use. Equally important, however, is the development of new antimicrobial drugs and their use in clinical practice. One of the new antibiotic agents is tigecycline of the glycylcycline group. The presented work aimed at assessing its in vitro effect on selected multiresistant bacteria.

Effective efflux pump systems play a crucial role in the development of multiple antimicrobial resistance in bacteria. In this study, the effects of an efflux pump inhibitor 1-(1-naphthylmethyl)-piperazine on ciprofloxacin (CIP) minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae were investigated. Nineteen CIP-resistant P. aeruginosa, 37 extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) positive E. coli and 13 ESBL positive K. pneumoniae clinical isolates were included to the study. CIP MIC values of each i

Carbapenems play a significant role in the current antibiotic armamentarium. Doripenem is the newest carbapenem to be commercially released. Its antimicrobial spectrum more closely resembles those of meropenem and imipenem than that of ertapenem. Thus, it has significant in vitro activity against streptococci, methicillin-susceptible staphylococci, Enterobacteriaceae (including extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing strains), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter species, and Bacteroides fragilis. Doripenem does not have clinically useful activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococc

Over the past decade enteric bacteria in Europe, Africa, and Asia have become increasingly resistant to cephalosporin antimicrobial agents. This is largely due to the spread of genes encoding extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) enzymes that can inactivate many cephalosporins. Recently, these resistance mechanisms have been identified in Salmonella isolated from humans in the United States. Due to the potential for transmission of resistant bacteria to humans via food animals, Salmonella animal isolates were monitored for ESBL production. During 2000-2004, Salmonella cattle slaughter isolat
